The feature refers to MegaPals, a word-association game in which players score by matching answers and by taking part in other match-related events. The pair with the most unique matches across the game becomes the MegaPals.
What is MegaPals?
MegaPals is one of the five games in The Jackbox Party Pack 12. Players receive a word and try to give the same response as someone else. Game Director Alina Constantin says the concept, pitched by Liz Anderson and Chase McClure, was inspired by the classic game Mind Meld. Its design aims to reward both group-thinking and individual creativity.

Matching answers earns points. Players also vote on hot takes drawn from unmatched words; those votes help determine the next starter. Other match-related events can contribute to scoring, including having an answer selected as a prompt for players to riff on. Jackbox’s description says the pair with the most unique matches across the game becomes the MegaPals.
How does the game show who is on the same wavelength?
Live submissions and group voting
As players write, their phones display real-time information about what others are submitting. Constantin says this helps players see each other’s “wavelengths.” A dynamic likes screen then gives the group a chance to discuss words moving to the top through voting.

The between-round relationship map
Between rounds, a minimap pairs each player with the person they have scored highest with and replays words associated with that connection. Constantin calls it “the players’ relationship chart, or the map of who you’re closest to at this point in time.” In context, this describes an in-game display of current scoring connections—not a measurement of closeness outside the game.
The map also gives players a strategic cue: they can try to keep matching with their current partner, adapt to that person’s style, or attempt to form a stronger-scoring pair with someone else. That playful effort to win someone over is part of the game’s social-comedy setup.

What does “science” mean here?
The “science” is in how the game turns word associations, matching, and group reactions into visible social play. Jackbox’s feature explains the design goals and scoring mechanics; it does not present psychological validation or an independent study showing that a winning pair are more compatible or closer friends in real life. MegaPals identifies a successful in-game partnership, not a friendship test.
Constantin says, “We wanted to reward group-think and individual creativity equally.” The scoring and voting give the group ways to respond both to shared answers and to unexpected contributions, while the map makes the resulting connections visible during the game.

What does the 28-pair figure mean?
Constantin says an eight-player game has 28 possible winning pairs. That is a count of possible pairs in that game configuration, not an observed statistic about friendship or a finding from a psychological study.
