No fixed number of gigabytes is established as the point where MEGA slows free downloads. MEGA says free and non-logged-in users have a variable transfer quota: when it is used up, downloads pause and resume after the quota resets. That is different from a speed throttle. The amount available can vary with IP-based usage and network conditions.
Does MEGA throttle download speed after a certain amount of data?
MEGA says it does not limit download speed for free users. Instead, free and non-logged-in users can reach a transfer quota, at which point a download pauses rather than continuing at a reduced rate. MEGA stated this in a response signed “TA” on January 7, 2026, hosted by Trustpilot.

The cited response does not establish a universal allowance such as a set number of gigabytes every six hours. The quota varies, so the amount available to one user at a particular time cannot be reliably inferred from a fixed online figure.

How MEGA’s transfer quota works
MEGA describes the free and non-logged-in allowance as the total data transferred from an IP address over a rolling six-hour period. The available amount depends on factors that include system utilization, time of day, internet service provider, and country. When the quota is exhausted, the transfer pauses automatically and resumes after the quota resets; MEGA does not give an exact reset time for an individual user in the cited response.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop

Because the allowance is per IP, activity by other people using the same public IP address can affect what is available to you. You may therefore hit the quota even if your own recent downloads seem modest.
Quota exhaustion versus a configured speed limit
These are separate mechanisms. A transfer quota governs how much data can be transferred before a download pauses. A client speed limit controls the rate of a transfer on your device.

| Mechanism | What it controls | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| MEGA transfer quota | Total transferred data before free or non-logged-in downloads pause | Variable, IP-based allowance; downloads pause at the quota and resume after reset. MEGA response hosted by Trustpilot |
| MEGAcmd speed limit | Download or upload rate configured in the command-line client | The MEGAcmd documentation says the speedlimit setting controls the rate and that zero means unlimited. |
Setting MEGAcmd’s local download speed limit to zero removes that client-side cap; it does not establish a way to bypass MEGA’s transfer quota.

Why did my MEGA download stop after a few GB?
If the transfer stopped and MEGA displayed a quota message, the variable transfer quota is a likely explanation. Wait for the quota to reset or consider an option with additional transfer quota. MEGA’s response says waiting is possible; it does not require an upgrade.

If the download is still running but consistently slow, that is not the same symptom as a quota pause. The cited quota information does not diagnose every slow transfer. If you use MEGAcmd, check whether you have configured a local speed limit; otherwise, do not assume that slowness alone proves quota exhaustion.

The cited MEGA response does not give a fixed number of gigabytes for every user, a guaranteed reset time, or an endorsed workaround involving a VPN, changing IP addresses, or third-party tools. An archived MEGA pricing page from May 2026 describes limited free transfer quota and higher quota on Pro plans, but it does not establish current plan terms; check MEGA’s current official plan information before relying on plan-specific details.
