Researchers at MIT Media Lab are exploring AI creations that range from hybrid digital animals to tools for questioning images and an AI agent that experiments with movement on a physical display. These projects give unusual ideas a working form—but “bringing to life” describes generated imagery, interactive software, or an experimental interface, not evidence that an AI is alive or conscious.
How can an AI help create a new kind of animal?
Meet the Ganimals
MIT Media Lab’s Meet the Ganimals, credited to Ziv Epstein, uses generative adversarial networks (GANs) to imagine hybrid creatures. The project invites participants to discover, breed, and feed digital “ganimals.” One example combines a goldfish and a golden retriever, bringing together orange coloring, large eyes, and drooping ears.

In the project’s design, user attention functions as food: creatures that attract more engagement gain an advantage and reproduce more often. This is a form of artificial selection shaped by the model and participants’ aesthetic preferences, not biological evolution in nature. The creatures are AI-generated images and digital entities within a participatory experiment.

What can experimental AI projects do besides make images?
Tools for reflection, image-checking, and collaboration
MIT Media Lab’s What’s Taking Form? series presents unfinished, evolving experiments, including several that are less about generating strange pictures than about changing how people work with AI:
#1 Best Overall
- 【6-in-1 Robot Building Kit】This robotic kits come with 780 pieces, can create 6 different robot models: Space Robot, Battle Robot, Space Reconnaissance Vehicle,Heavy Tank, Fighter, Tracked Vehicle. - Gadfly: Om Gokhale’s AI tool is described as a critical instigator that asks reflective questions.
- Unspectacular Feed: Graduate student Saetbyeol Leeyouk is developing an aid to help Instagram users spot deepfakes.
- Tangible Prompting: Lucy Li’s board-game-inspired interface is designed for creative collaboration between two people and an AI system.
- Labububot: Miranda Lin Li’s project is introduced as a rare monster. The series description offers little technical detail, so it is best understood as a colorful entry in the collection rather than evidence of a particular AI capability.
Together, these projects show how experimental AI can take the form of a question-asking tool, an interface for assessing images, or a shared creative activity. The series describes its projects as early explorations; its short summaries do not establish full technical implementations or results.
What changes when an AI agent gets a physical interface?
I Gave an AI a Body
In I Gave an AI a Body, MIT Media Lab describes connecting an autonomous AI agent running on a Mac mini to inFORM, a 30×30 actuated pin grid, later updated as neoFORM. Rather than assigning a fixed sequence of movements, project contact Cyrus Clarke gave the agent access to the display code and asked it to explore physical expression.

According to the project’s account, the agent first produced a breathing-like pattern, then explored the display’s boundaries and generated movements including spirals and gestures toward nearby people. Clarke also describes bodylab, a pipeline for generating, recording, and selecting movement variations to build a gesture vocabulary. These are reported steps in an ongoing experiment, not independently reproduced findings or evidence of a consumer robot product.

What do these projects show—and what don’t they prove?
The projects use different media and pursue different aims: Ganimals explores generated creatures and audience participation; the What’s Taking Form? experiments investigate reflective, image-checking, and collaborative interfaces; and I Gave an AI a Body explores movement through a physical display and how people interpret it.
In each case, “life” is a metaphor for a creation or interaction becoming vivid to people. The cited project descriptions document aims and reported outputs. They do not show that an AI system is conscious, sentient, or literally alive.
