Real-life Pokémon Professors are trained volunteers who help official Play! Pokémon events run: they judge matches, answer questions, organize tournaments and leagues, and support event logistics and player safety. They are not the fictional researchers in the games, and the role is broader than making rulings.
What real-life Pokémon Professors do
The official Play! Pokémon FAQ describes several kinds of work. Professors often serve as judges, but they may also answer competitors’ questions, organize tournaments, assist local leagues, or help with event organization, execution and marketing. A person’s duties depend on their role and the game or event they support.

At the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco, The Guardian reported that roughly 300 Professors were present, citing an estimate from a Pokémon Company International representative. That is an approximate headcount for that event, not an official participation total for the program.
Why judging is more than knowing the rules
Accurate results and consistent rulings
Judges need to understand the applicable rules and apply them to what happened at the table. Head judge Gemma Byard told The Guardian: “What they don’t understand is that they’re seeing a picture, but we’re getting the entire story, and we’re making the decisions based upon that story,”

That means listening to the players, establishing the sequence of events and making a decision based on the full situation—not just the moment a spectator happened to see.
Match records and venue safety
Byard also described checking match slips so results are correct and signed by the players. Those records matter because tournament standings depend on accurate results. Her work included looking beyond rulings, too: “We have to make sure that the venue is safe for everybody that’s around. We’re constantly looking out for anything that may be unsafe, or anybody that shouldn’t be in the venue. There’s a lot to think about on top of the rulings.”

Support changes with the game and assignment
There is no single day-to-day job description for every Professor. The Guardian’s reporting from Worlds described staff supporting different games in different ways: Pokémon Unite staff may coordinate players and provide technical support, while Pokémon Trading Card Game judges may offer hands-on guidance to new competitors. Local league assistance and major-championship staffing also call for different kinds of support.

Pokémon Professor Evelyne de Groot compared the role to customer service and told The Guardian that participants need clear instructions and staff who understand the game well enough to help. As she put it: “If you’re not organising it properly, if you don’t give them clear instructions, then you see some failure […] You will sometimes get questions. You need to make sure you’re knowledgable regarding that. If you don’t know what you’re doing, if you don’t know how the card game works, then you can’t help them.”

How to become a Professor
Play! Pokémon’s official FAQ says applicants must be adults, apply through the Professor application, and undergo a background check. The program says those checks help support a safe environment, particularly for younger fans. The FAQ also links to tournament rules and resources, including official rulings.
- Check the current program information. Read the official Professor FAQ and follow its application link. The FAQ was updated September 17, 2025; application procedures can change.
- Meet the age requirement and apply. The program requires Professors to be adults. Its FAQ answers the question “Why do I have to wait until I am 18 years old before I can be a Professor?” by pointing to the responsibilities involved in supporting a safe environment.
- Complete the required background check. Follow the instructions provided during the application process.
- Build the game and event knowledge your role needs. Use the official rules and resources linked from the FAQ, and be prepared to communicate clearly with players and other staff.
The FAQ describes the formal entry requirements; it does not establish a universal training path or guarantee a particular assignment after approval.

Volunteering, compensation and expectations
Professors are described as volunteers, but that does not establish that every event, region or assignment has identical compensation arrangements. In a September 24, 2026 feature, modified October 2, The Guardian reported that most interviewees declined to discuss compensation and that Pokémon Company International declined to provide an official explanation. One unnamed Professor described European staff receiving merchandise and reported wages at US regional tournaments, and said travel and lodging were supported for Worlds. This is an individual account reported by the newspaper, not a published program-wide pay policy.
The Guardian disclosed that Pokémon Company paid the writer’s travel and accommodation for the Worlds reporting. That is relevant context for the article’s reporting relationship; it does not change the limits of what the compensation account establishes.

Official Professors are not the same as competitive mentors
“Professor” can also be used informally for people who teach competitive strategy. Smogon, for example, describes its own articles, tournaments and volunteer tutoring, where tutors help learners on a simulator. That community education work is distinct from staffing official Play! Pokémon events. A strategy mentor helps someone improve at the game; an official Professor works within the event program and its assigned responsibilities.
Competitive formats keep changing
The rules, games and platforms supported by competitive Pokémon can change over time. In a March 24, 2026 announcement, Pokémon said Pokémon Champions would become the standard platform for Video Game Championships following its Nintendo Switch launch on April 8, 2026, with the Indianapolis Regionals planned as the first live official Championship Series event to use it exclusively. The company’s June 10, 2026 retrospective places that change in the wider history of VGC. This is dated context, not a permanent guarantee about future seasons; check current official announcements for the platform and rules in effect for a specific event.
