Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallYes—researchers have documented bioluminescence in two deep-sea sea spiders, Colossendeis tasmanica and Colossendeis minor. They are pycnogonids, not true spiders. In reported tests, C. tasmanica produced a blue glow from its legs, but why the animals glow—and the exact chemistry behind the light—remain unresolved.
What are these long-legged deep-sea animals?
Sea spiders, or pycnogonids, are a distinct group of marine animals; despite their name and leggy appearance, they are not true spiders. The glowing animals in this report belong to the genus Colossendeis. They should not be confused with spider crabs or giant isopods, which are different animals.

The observations were reported in a 2026 study by Jérôme Mallefet and colleagues, “Abyssal glowing sea spider, first insight into pycnogonid luminescence,” published in Deep-Sea Research Part I: Oceanographic Research Papers (DOI: 10.1016/j.dsr.2026.104735). The details below are reported by Phys.org’s October 6, 2026 coverage of the study.

The study report describes bioluminescence in two species: Colossendeis tasmanica and Colossendeis minor. Researchers collected seven C. tasmanica and two C. minor during a 2017 deep-sea survey off Australia’s east coast. The reported collection depths ranged from 1,006 to 4,977 meters.

That is a small set of collected animals, not a measure of how common glowing is among sea spiders. The reported observations establish these two species as documented cases; they do not show what share of sea spiders glow.
What did the glow look like?
In shipboard dark-room tests, researchers used gentle pinching and chemical triggers to elicit light from the animals’ legs. For C. tasmanica, the reported emission was deep blue, at 449 nanometers, and was observed only in the legs. The light was brightest at the distal propodus—the segment near the end of each leg—and faded toward the body.

This is a comparison between controlled laboratory triggers, not evidence that the animals naturally use separate chemical and physical glowing behaviors.
What might produce the light?
After collection, researchers examined frozen leg extracts with biochemical tests and studied tissue sections under a microscope. Microscopy indicated that light production was associated with gut-related cells in the legs. That location led the researchers to suggest the animals might obtain a light-emitting ingredient through their diet.

A standard test for a common bioluminescent reaction produced little light. Hydrogen peroxide and other reactions triggered light in the tissue, and the response increased with calcium. Taken together, the results point toward a possible photoprotein system—a light-producing protein that can emit light when activated—but they do not identify or molecularly validate the exact molecule or cells. The study authors say further molecular research is needed to validate and characterize the proposed photoprotein.
Why do sea spiders glow?
The ecological purpose of the light is not known. The reported experiments show that the animals can produce light under stimulation, but they do not establish that it is used to attract prey, deter predators, communicate, or serve another natural function. As the study authors put it, “The precise ecological roles of pycnogonid bioluminescence remain elusive and warrant further study.”
