What does the Garmin Approach S72 do?
The S72 is designed to serve both as an on-course golf watch and as an everyday smartwatch. Garmin’s announcement describes tools for reviewing aspects of a round and practice session; these provide data to examine, not proof of improved performance or validated coaching.

Golf and practice analysis
- Heart-rate trends: Review how heart rate varied before and after shots, then look for patterns alongside round score. This is a way to explore personal data, not a clinical interpretation.
- On-wrist swing metrics: Garmin lists hand speed, backswing length and wrist rotation.
- Driving-range tracking: A range activity tracks swings and logs practice to Garmin Connect.
- Green reading: On supported courses with green-contour data, the watch can indicate putt-break direction and average slope percentage. Coverage is not stated to include every course.
- Putting analytics: After a round, golfers can review speed bias, direction bias and make rate.
Garmin says green reading and post-round putting analytics require an active Garmin Golf Membership. The launch announcement does not establish the membership’s current price or terms, so check Garmin’s current membership details before buying on the assumption that these features are included.

The S72 adds a speaker and microphone for calls and basic tasks using voice commands. Its flashlight offers variable-intensity white light as well as red light. Garmin also lists wrist-based heart rate, stress tracking, Body Battery energy monitoring, advanced sleep monitoring and activity profiles. These are wellness features, not medical diagnosis or monitoring.

What is new about the S72’s design?
Garmin announced two case sizes, 43 mm and 47 mm, both with AMOLED displays, a titanium bezel, sapphire lens and ComfortFit fabric band. The Ireland product page confirms a 43 mm configuration, but does not establish US stock or pricing for that version. Choose between the sizes based on fit and preference; the launch materials do not provide a side-by-side comparison of their battery performance.
How long does the Approach S72 battery last?
Garmin claims up to 20 hours in golf mode and up to 16 days with GPS turned off for the larger, 47 mm smartwatch. These are manufacturer-stated maximums, not independently measured results. The reviewed launch announcement does not give a comparable golf-mode battery figure for the 43 mm model.

Who is the Approach S72 for?
The S72 is most relevant to golfers who want course and practice data on their wrist and also value a premium smartwatch with wellness features, calls and a flashlight. Its green-reading and putting-analysis tools may appeal to players whose courses are supported and who are willing to maintain the required active Garmin Golf Membership.

Before choosing it, consider the specific features you will use, whether your courses have green-contour coverage, your preferred case size and the membership requirement. Garmin’s launch materials describe available functions and specifications, but do not provide independent performance results or evidence that the watch will lower scores.

Susan Lyman, Garmin Vice President of Consumer Sales and Marketing, said in the October 6, 2026 announcement: “We’re excited to introduce the next generation of golf technology with Approach S72 and help golfers better understand their whole game.” This is Garmin’s description of its product, not independent evidence of its performance.
