Meet Breanne Rohloff, the Engineer Who Drives NASA Rockets to the Launch Pad

Moving a rocket from NASA Kennedy Space Center’s Vehicle Assembly Building to a launch pad is a slow, carefully monitored operation. In a 2022 interview, Breanne Rohloff, an engineer for NASA contractor Jacobs, described driving the crawler that carries the assembled stack: at a reported 0.8 miles per hour, with the trip taking about four miles and a full eight-hour shift.

Who drives the rocket crawler?

Rohloff told Futurism that she studied engineering at the University of Central Florida, interned at Kennedy Space Center, and joined the crawler team after graduating. The interview identified her as an engineer for NASA contractor Jacobs. Her job was not to assemble the rocket; her team moved the completed vehicle and handled the work around that move.

She summed up the role this way: “We’re like the Space Center’s Uber for rockets.” The 2022 profile described her as 24, but that is an age reported at the time of publication, not a current age.

How big is the crawler, and how long does the trip take?

The Futurism headline calls the crawler a 6.5 million-pound vehicle; Rohloff recalled its weight in the interview as 6 million pounds. Those are two differently attributed figures from the same 2022 coverage, not a single independently verified specification. She said it travels at 0.8 miles per hour.

Rohloff put the route from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the launch pad at about four miles. She said the move takes a whole eight-hour shift, including picking up the assembled stack, setting it down at the pad, and clearing the pad by backing away. The shift estimate describes the operation, not eight hours of uninterrupted driving.

Why is steering a crawler different from driving a truck?

The crawler’s cab is at the front right, while steering is done from the middle of the vehicle. From the cab, a driver cannot judge its position the way a car driver judges a turn. Rohloff said drivers stand and use fixed visual references along the crawlerway, monitoring the front and rear tracks and making small steering corrections.

She reported that steering is limited to a maximum of six degrees in one direction. At the interview’s reported pace of 0.8 miles per hour, the machine responds slowly, so the driver must anticipate turns and watch how the tracks follow the route. As Rohloff put it: “You’d think a turn wouldn’t sneak up on you, but it will sneak up on you.”

How does the crawler keep the rocket level on a slope?

Rohloff described a system called JEL—jacking, equalizing, and leveling—that keeps the surface carrying the rocket stack level as the crawler climbs the launch-pad slope. In her account, hydraulic cylinders at each corner adjust the platform, and operators watch the system’s limits during the climb.

What happens before and during the move?

Driving is only one part of the job. Rohloff described preventative maintenance, corrective maintenance when problems are noticed, and walkdowns before a move. Her account also includes watching for wildlife along the route: she named hogs, coyotes, alligators, tortoises, and mice, and said the team can stop so animals can be moved safely.
