Yes. Your iPhone can estimate a sofa, table, countertop, or other furniture with Apple’s built-in Measure app. Point the camera at the object, let the app detect a rectangle, or mark two points yourself to get a dimension on screen.
Use the result for quick shopping and layout decisions, not as a precision substitute for a tape measure. Apple’s own warning is clear: “Measurements are approximate.”

What the iPhone Measure app can do
Measure turns the iPhone camera into a quick, visual dimension tool. It estimates the distance between points in the camera view and can recognize rectangular objects automatically. That makes it useful for questions such as whether a bookcase is roughly the right width for a wall, whether a coffee table will leave enough open floor, or whether a countertop section is close to a target length.
For a rectangular piece, the app may outline the visible face with a white rectangle. Tapping that outline displays the detected dimensions. If the shape is irregular, partly hidden, or not recognized, you can place a start point and an end point manually. The same manual method lets you measure a single edge of a chair, cabinet, shelf, or appliance.

The app reports a camera-based estimate, not a certified measurement. Perspective, lighting, the texture of the object, and how steadily you scan all affect the result. Treat it as a fast first check before moving a heavy item or ordering a replacement.
How to measure furniture step by step
- Open Measure. Find the Measure app in the iPhone’s Utilities folder, or use Spotlight Search if it is not visible there. The App Store listing states that Measure requires iOS 12 or later.
- Scan the area slowly. Hold the iPhone so the camera sees the furniture and some of the surrounding floor or wall. Move gradually rather than swinging the phone across the room. A slow scan gives the app more visual information to establish the object’s position.
- Frame the furniture. Keep the entire edge or face you want to measure in view. Avoid covering the corner with your hand, and try to keep the phone reasonably level with the surface.
- Use automatic detection when it appears. When a white rectangle surrounds a clearly rectangular object, tap the rectangle. Measure will place dimensions on the screen for the detected height and width or length of that face.
- Use manual points for other shapes. If no rectangle appears, move the on-screen pointer to the edge where the measurement should start and tap the Add button. Move to the ending edge and tap Add again. The app draws a line between the two points and shows the estimated distance.
- Record the result if needed. Use the camera control shown in Measure to save a photo of the object with the dimension overlay. A saved image is useful when comparing several pieces in a store or checking notes while planning a room.
- Choose your units. Switch between metric and imperial units in the app interface before recording dimensions, so your notes match the units used by a furniture listing, floor plan, or contractor.
Repeat a measurement from a second angle if a number will influence a purchase. A similar result from two positions is more reassuring than a single reading taken while the phone is moving.
Measuring a sofa, table, cabinet, or countertop
Width and length
Stand far enough back to see the two outer corners of the front edge. Let the app scan, then tap the detected rectangle if it appears. If the front is broken up by cushions, handles, or an open shelf, manually mark the left and right endpoints of the edge you care about.
Height
Measure from the floor to the highest point that must clear a shelf, window, or doorway. Keep both endpoints visible. For a sofa, decide whether you need the frame height or the highest cushion and measure the relevant points rather than assuming the visible rectangle represents the whole item.

Depth
Depth is often harder because the front and back edges may not be visible at once. Position yourself so the side of the furniture is clear, then mark the front and rear corners manually. If the back is against a wall, measure the accessible side and remember that protruding legs, handles, or reclining mechanisms can extend beyond the main body.
Countertops and other fixed surfaces
Measure each straight section separately when a countertop has corners or cutouts. The app can estimate a straight edge, but a sink opening, backsplash, rounded corner, or overhang means the useful dimension is not always the outermost line visible in the camera view. For a custom cut, use the phone reading as a planning estimate and verify every final dimension with a physical retractable tape measure.
Can it tell whether furniture will fit through a doorway?
It can help you make an initial fit check, but it cannot guarantee delivery clearance. Measure the furniture’s relevant width, height, and depth, then measure the clear opening of the doorway separately. Compare the smallest clear doorway dimension with the furniture dimension that must pass through it.

Do not measure only the door slab. Account for the frame, threshold, trim, hinges, and any point where the door cannot open fully. Also consider the route: a hallway may be narrower than the doorway, and a tall cabinet may need to rotate or tilt. For a sofa, measure the packaged or wrapped dimensions when those are available, not just the unwrapped cushions.

Before an expensive order or a scheduled delivery, confirm the critical clearances with a retractable tape measure. A few millimeters can determine whether an item passes, and the Measure app does not provide a guaranteed tolerance.
How accurate is iPhone Measure?
Apple describes the readings as approximate. Its iPhone User Guide recommends measuring well-defined objects positioned about 0.5 to 3 meters (2 to 10 feet) from the iPhone. That range is a practical target for furniture: close enough for the object to occupy a useful portion of the camera view, but far enough to see the endpoints or corners clearly.
There is no accuracy percentage established here that you can apply to every iPhone, room, or object. The result can change when the camera is too close, the object has soft or indistinct edges, the room is dark, or the phone is moving. Glossy surfaces, transparent glass, patterned upholstery, and clutter around the item can also make it harder for the app to identify boundaries.
For a better estimate, use a well-lit area, clean the camera lens, expose the edge you want to measure, and keep the phone steady while placing points. Measure the same edge again from a slightly different position. If the two readings disagree materially, use the physical measurement for the decision.

- Good use: comparing a few sofas, checking whether a table is roughly the right size, planning furniture placement, or creating a quick visual record.
- High-consequence use: ordering a custom countertop, cutting material, confirming a doorway clearance, or installing an item with almost no spare space. Verify these with a tape measure.
Which iPhones support furniture measurement?
The Measure App Store listing requires iOS 12 or later. The basic camera-based workflow is intended for compatible iPhones running that software, but individual capabilities vary by model.
Apple documents horizontal and vertical guide lines for iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, and later supported Pro hardware. Those guide lines can make it easier to align a measurement with a level floor, wall, or edge. Their availability should not be assumed on every iPhone that can open Measure.

Because Apple’s support is model- and software-dependent, check the Measure listing and your iPhone’s current iOS version when setting up an older device. The presence of the app alone does not mean every guide-line behavior is available.

The edges are not well defined
A rounded armchair, dark object against a dark wall, glass table, or furniture hidden by blankets may not produce the white rectangle. Clear a small area around the edge and switch to manual points.

The camera cannot see both endpoints
Move to a side or corner where the start and end of the edge are visible. Measuring an imagined line across an obstruction makes the estimate less dependable.
You are too close or too far away
Return to the recommended 0.5–3 m (2–10 ft) range when the room allows it. At very close range, perspective can be pronounced; at excessive distance, the edge occupies too few pixels to place accurately.
The phone is moving too quickly
Pause briefly after framing the item and move in small, controlled motions. If the app loses its reference, rescan the surrounding area before placing points.

Check that you are measuring the same physical edges and using the same units. Take two readings from different positions. A spread between readings is a warning to verify with a tape rather than average the numbers.
A practical workflow for buying furniture
- Measure the destination. Estimate the wall, alcove, floor area, and doorway clearances with Measure, recording each dimension in one unit system.
- Measure the candidate item. Capture width, height, and depth, including the parts that must pass through the route or fit under a shelf.
- Compare the limiting dimension. Use the smallest doorway or hallway clearance and the largest relevant furniture dimension. Leave room for turning, trim, and handling.
- Recheck critical numbers physically. Before paying for a custom piece or scheduling delivery, confirm the decisive dimensions with a retractable tape measure.
- Save visual notes. Keep photos with overlays alongside the listing or room sketch so you know which edge each number describes.
This workflow uses the iPhone for speed and documentation while reserving physical measurement for decisions where an approximation could cost money or prevent installation.
Room-scale measurement with RoomPlan
If you need more than one furniture dimension, Apple’s RoomPlan API supports a different workflow. On supported iPhone and iPad hardware equipped with a LiDAR Scanner, RoomPlan uses the camera and depth data to create a 3D floor plan. The output can include room dimensions and characteristics of furniture detected in the space.
RoomPlan is intended for room planning, visualization, and arranging multiple objects, not as a blanket replacement for a tape measure. Availability depends on the device’s LiDAR hardware and on the app that implements the API. A room scan can help you understand relationships between walls and furniture, while a final installation dimension still deserves direct verification.
