Call the department before you arrive and say measles is suspected so staff can prepare. If there are no emergency signs, contact a doctor or hospital promptly for instructions rather than arriving without warning.
What are the warning signs of measles complications?
The CDC says “DO NOT WAIT” if a person with measles is worsening rapidly or has any of these signs. Seek emergency-department care immediately; do not wait for several symptoms to appear or use this list to diagnose the illness at home.

- Trouble breathing or breathing faster than normal.
- Pain when breathing or coughing.
- Signs of dehydration, such as a dry nose and mouth, urinating less than usual, or crying without tears.
- A fever or headache that will not stop.
- Confusion, decreased alertness, or severe weakness.
- In a young child: blue color around the mouth, low energy, or difficulty feeding.
These are CDC emergency-care warning signs, not an exhaustive checklist. Rapid worsening itself is reason to seek emergency care.

When should I take a child with measles to the ER?
Take a child to the emergency department immediately for any listed warning sign or rapid worsening. Call ahead and tell staff that measles is suspected or confirmed. This gives the hospital an opportunity to prepare and reduce the chance of exposing other patients and staff.
#1 Best Overall
Children younger than 5 are among the groups at increased risk of serious complications. Do not delay emergency care while trying to confirm measles or waiting for a rash to appear.
Can measles cause breathing problems or dehydration?
Yes. Measles can cause serious complications including pneumonia, and breathing difficulty, faster-than-normal breathing, or pain with breathing or coughing needs urgent assessment. Dehydration is another warning sign; CDC examples include dry nose and mouth, less urination, and crying without tears.
Measles can also cause encephalitis, or brain swelling. Confusion, decreased alertness, severe weakness, a persistent fever, or a headache that will not stop are among the emergency signs in CDC guidance.

CDC’s population-level estimates, on its page updated August 5, 2026, say as many as 1 in 20 children with measles gets pneumonia, about 1 in 1,000 children with measles develops encephalitis, about 1 in 5 unvaccinated people in the United States who get measles is hospitalized, and nearly 1 to 3 of every 1,000 infected children die from respiratory and neurologic complications. These figures describe groups, not an individual person’s prognosis.
What should I do if measles symptoms get worse?
- If there is rapid worsening or an emergency sign: go to a hospital emergency department immediately and call ahead to report suspected or confirmed measles.
- If measles is suspected but there are no emergency signs: call a doctor or hospital promptly for instructions. A clinician can arrange an evaluation in a way that helps limit exposure to other people.
Early measles symptoms commonly include high fever, cough, runny nose, and red or watery eyes; rash follows. CDC says symptoms generally begin 7 to 14 days after contact, with rash appearing several days after the initial symptoms. Do not wait for the rash or a confirmed diagnosis before seeking help for emergency signs.

CDC identifies these groups as more likely to experience serious measles complications:
- Children younger than 5.
- Adults older than 20.
- Pregnant people.
- People with weakened immune systems.
Risk group alone does not replace symptom-based emergency guidance. For suspected measles, contact a clinician promptly; for rapid worsening or any emergency warning sign, seek emergency care immediately.

Measles care is generally supportive, with treatment aimed at relieving symptoms. Complications such as pneumonia and secondary bacterial infections need management under a healthcare provider’s supervision; CDC says there is no specific FDA-approved antiviral therapy for measles.
CDC provider guidance says vitamin A may be given to patients with confirmed measles under healthcare-provider supervision. Too much vitamin A can be toxic, and high levels should be avoided during pregnancy because of the risk of severe birth defects. Do not use vitamin A or another home treatment in place of urgent assessment for emergency signs.
