MDR vs EDR: Which Endpoint Security Option Is Right for a Small Business?

EDR is the security technology; MDR is the managed service that operates technology with people and processes. A small business with named staff who can continuously review alerts, investigate incidents and take response actions can run EDR internally. A business without dependable monitoring coverage should choose MDR, or keep its preferred EDR platform and add an MDR service to operate it.

The practical decision is not “which acronym is better?” It is who watches the endpoints, who decides whether an alert is an attack, who can isolate a device, and who coordinates the response when something happens outside office hours.

What EDR and MDR actually mean

EDR is an endpoint detection and response capability

Endpoint detection and response (EDR) installs an agent on computers and servers, records security-relevant activity, analyzes behavior for suspicious patterns, raises alerts and provides investigation and response controls. Microsoft describes Defender for Endpoint EDR as providing “advanced, near real-time, actionable detections,” alert investigation, breach-scope visibility and response actions.

EDR is therefore a technology layer and an operating console. It does not automatically mean that a vendor’s analysts are watching every alert or that somebody will respond at 2 a.m. The buyer still has to assign monitoring, investigation, policy tuning, escalation and incident-communication responsibilities.

MDR adds a managed security operation

Managed detection and response (MDR) is a service wrapped around security tooling. The provider supplies human analysts, documented processes and threat intelligence to monitor alerts, validate suspicious activity, investigate incidents and help or perform response. CrowdStrike describes MDR as adding “human expertise, mature processes, and threat intelligence” for organizations that lack the resources or time to use EDR fully.

An MDR contract can include an EDR platform, but MDR and EDR are not interchangeable product names. You can buy EDR and operate it yourself, buy MDR with the provider’s selected tools, or use your own EDR while an external security operations center (SOC) operates it.

EDR versus MDR at a glance

Decision area EDR operated internally MDR service
Primary thing purchased Endpoint telemetry, detection, investigation and response software Monitoring and response service, usually using EDR and related tools
Alert monitoring Your staff must review and prioritize alerts Provider analysts monitor according to the service’s coverage and SLA
Investigation Internal staff scope the alert, affected accounts and devices Provider analysts investigate and deliver findings or coordinate with your team
Response authority Your administrators isolate devices, stop files and change controls Authority depends on the contract; some providers act directly, others require approval
Coverage hours Only as broad as your staffing and on-call arrangements May be 24/7 or limited; verify the exact hours and escalation terms
Staffing requirement Security skills, time for triage and incident leadership are required Less day-to-day analyst capacity is needed internally, but an owner is still required
Customization Direct control of policies, exclusions and integrations Shared control; changes may follow the provider’s process
Cost shape License plus staff time, training, tooling and incident support Per-endpoint or service fee plus any onboarding, response or retention charges
Accountability Your business owns detection and response outcomes Responsibilities are divided by the SLA and the response-authorization model

When a small business can run EDR itself

Choose internally operated EDR only when the operating model is as deliberate as the software purchase. A suitable business has all of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A named person or team reviews alerts every day rather than treating the console as a passive dashboard.
  • Someone can investigate identity, email, cloud and network context, not just the single endpoint that triggered an alert.
  • There is an on-call path for high-severity incidents outside normal business hours.
  • Administrators are authorized and trained to isolate a device, stop or quarantine a file, preserve evidence and escalate an incident.
  • Policies, exclusions, sensor health and software updates are maintained as part of normal IT operations.
  • Leadership accepts responsibility for deciding when to shut down systems, notify stakeholders or bring in an incident-response specialist.

If one employee is expected to perform all of this only when time allows, the business does not have continuous EDR operations; it has EDR software with intermittent attention. That distinction is the most common source of false confidence.

When MDR is the safer operating model

MDR is usually the better fit when there is no dependable security-monitoring team, alerts are routinely deferred, or management wants an external party to investigate and coordinate response. It is particularly relevant when the business has a small IT department that must prioritize uptime, support and projects over continuous threat hunting.

MDR does not remove every internal obligation. Your team still needs to deploy agents, maintain an accurate asset and identity inventory, provide contacts, approve or pre-authorize response actions and help analysts understand which systems are critical. A provider cannot make a safe business decision about a production server if it has no information about that server’s role.

Who responds when an endpoint is compromised?

With internally operated EDR

Your administrators or security staff validate the alert, determine scope and select the response. Typical actions include isolating the device from the network, running an antivirus scan, stopping and quarantining a file, blocking an indicator, collecting evidence and rebuilding the host when necessary. The exact controls depend on the EDR plan and configuration.

With MDR

The MDR analysts normally perform initial triage and investigation. Whether they can isolate a device, block a file, disable an account or change a policy without asking you depends on the contract. Some services provide “notify and advise” only; others have pre-authorized containment for defined severity levels. Ask for the precise authorization matrix rather than assuming that “managed” means unrestricted action.

Questions that expose the real response model

  • Who validates a high-severity alert, and how quickly must that happen?
  • Can the provider isolate a workstation or server without waiting for approval?
  • Can it stop and quarantine a file or add a block indicator?
  • Who contacts your executive, IT and legal teams during an incident?
  • What happens if your designated contact does not answer?
  • Which actions are included, and which require a separate incident-response retainer?
  • How are actions logged and how can you obtain the evidence?

Coverage for your actual endpoints and operating systems

Do not select a service from a generic platform list. Inventory the operating systems and device roles you actually run: Windows desktops, macOS laptops, Linux servers, virtual machines, point-of-sale systems and remote or disconnected devices. Microsoft’s supported-solution documentation shows that coverage varies by product and platform, so confirm support for each edition and version in your fleet.

Check server licensing separately. A product that protects employee workstations may have different requirements, telemetry or response controls for servers. Also ask what happens when an endpoint is offline, replaced, reimaged or outside the provider’s network. An uninstalled or unhealthy sensor creates a blind spot regardless of how capable the console is.

Integrations determine how useful an alert is

An isolated endpoint alert often cannot tell you whether a password was stolen, an email delivered the payload or another device is compromised. Compare integrations with identity providers, email security, cloud services, firewalls, SIEM platforms and ticketing systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask whether the MDR team can access those data sources or merely receive an EDR alert. Confirm which integrations are included, whether connectors incur extra fees, how long connected data is retained and whether your staff can export investigation records. Correlation across endpoint, identity and cloud activity is often more valuable than a longer list of unconnected detections.

Telemetry retention and threat hunting

Retention affects both investigations and compliance. Ask how many days of raw endpoint telemetry, alert history and investigation artifacts are retained; whether retention differs by plan; and whether you can export data when ending the service.

“Threat hunting” can mean several things. Determine whether advanced queries are available to your staff, whether analysts proactively hunt on your behalf, how many hours are included and whether a hunt produces a written scope and findings. A console that stores data but provides no practical way to search it may not meet an investigation requirement.

Comparing the total cost, not just the license

EDR’s visible price is usually a license or subscription. Its operating cost also includes alert review, analyst training, policy tuning, exclusions, device replacement, integration work and incident-response support. If an employee spends several hours each week triaging alerts, that time belongs in the comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MDR generally costs more per endpoint than an unstaffed EDR license because it includes analysts and service operations. It can still be less expensive overall when it avoids hiring for round-the-clock coverage, reduces deferred investigations or shortens an outage. No universal price or staffing ratio establishes that one model is always cheaper; calculate the costs for your own fleet and coverage requirement.

A practical cost worksheet

  • EDR subscription for workstations and servers.
  • Deployment, onboarding and sensor-health remediation.
  • IT and security staff hours for daily triage, investigation and policy changes.
  • On-call compensation or an external incident-response retainer.
  • Integration, storage and data-export charges.
  • Downtime, recovery and communications costs if an incident is detected late.
  • MDR subscription, minimum endpoint counts and onboarding fees.
  • Any surcharge for 24/7 coverage, additional telemetry retention or response actions.

What response controls EDR can provide

Microsoft lists manual Defender response actions such as running an antivirus scan, isolating a device, stopping and quarantining a file, and adding an indicator to block or allow a file. Available actions depend on the plan and configuration. Automated investigation and response may be included only in higher-tier plans, so verify the exact entitlement for the SKU you are considering.

Response controls should be tested in a controlled way before an emergency. Confirm that isolation still permits approved management traffic, that administrators can release a device, that quarantining does not remove required business software and that every action produces an audit record.

How to evaluate an MDR or EDR proposal

  1. Document the environment. Record endpoint counts, operating systems, servers, remote devices, critical applications, identity provider, email system, cloud platforms and existing security tools.
  2. Define coverage hours. State whether you need business-hours monitoring, nights and weekends, or continuous 24/7 coverage. Require the provider to define holidays, staffing and escalation windows.
  3. Map alert ownership. For each severity level, write who receives the alert, who investigates, who approves containment and who closes the incident.
  4. Inspect the response matrix. List every action the provider may take automatically, with approval, or not at all. Include device isolation, file quarantine, indicator blocking and account actions.
  5. Test a realistic scenario. Walk through ransomware on a laptop, credential theft involving cloud email and a compromised server. Measure notification, evidence delivery and recovery handoffs.
  6. Review data handling. Confirm telemetry location, retention, export format, access controls and deletion when the contract ends.
  7. Price administration. Include onboarding, tuning, exclusions, integrations, device replacement and changes to endpoint counts.
  8. Read the SLA and exclusions. Identify unsupported operating systems, offline-device limitations, minimum quantities, response-time commitments and circumstances that become billable incident response.

Using EDR and MDR together

A common arrangement is to select an EDR platform for its operating-system support, integrations or response controls, then have an external SOC monitor it. This preserves access to the platform and data while adding continuous human coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before signing, confirm that the MDR provider supports your exact EDR edition, receives the telemetry you expect and can perform the actions you want. Establish whether your administrators retain console access, who owns policy changes and how disputes over a containment action are resolved. “We use EDR with MDR” is meaningful only when those boundaries are written down.

EDR and MDR are only one layer of protection

CISA’s #StopRansomware guidance recommends application allowlisting and/or EDR on all assets so that only authorized software executes and unauthorized software is blocked. It also recommends centrally managed antivirus with configured warning escalation.

Endpoint monitoring cannot compensate for unpatched systems, weak identity controls, unsafe email, exposed remote services or untested backups. A small-business program should combine endpoint protection with:

  • Prompt operating-system and application patching.
  • Multifactor authentication and least-privilege administration.
  • Email filtering, attachment and link controls, and phishing reporting.
  • Offline or otherwise protected backups tested through restoration exercises.
  • Network segmentation for servers and sensitive systems.
  • A written incident procedure with contacts, decision authority and communications steps.
  • Periodic reviews of endpoint inventory, sensor health and administrative accounts.

Common purchasing mistakes and their fixes

Buying a console without assigning an owner

Problem: Alerts accumulate until someone notices a critical event. Fix: Put a named person, backup and escalation clock in the operating procedure before deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming “24/7” means 24/7 response

Problem: A service may monitor continuously but only contact customers during stated hours, or may require approval before containment. Fix: Request the monitoring, notification and action SLAs separately.

Ignoring servers and non-Windows devices

Problem: A critical Linux server or macOS fleet remains outside coverage. Fix: Match every asset class to a supported sensor, license and response capability.

Allowing unmanaged exclusions

Problem: Broad exclusions hide malicious behavior and remain after the original troubleshooting need ends. Fix: Require justification, an owner, an expiration date and periodic review for every exclusion.

Failing to rehearse isolation

Problem: Staff discover during an incident that isolation breaks remote management or that nobody can release the device. Fix: Test containment and recovery on a noncritical endpoint and document the rollback path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A decision guide for three common small-business situations

Small IT team with security capability

Internally operated EDR can work when staff have explicit daily monitoring time, investigation skills and an on-call plan. Add external incident-response support for events beyond the team’s experience.

No security specialist and frequent alert backlog

MDR is the stronger default because the central gap is operational coverage, not a missing console. Choose a service with clear escalation, evidence delivery and response authority.

Existing EDR investment but no continuous coverage

Use both: retain the EDR platform if it meets coverage and integration needs, and contract an MDR provider to monitor and investigate it. Make sure the provider is authorized to take the containment actions your risk profile requires.

What to compare among EDR platforms

Microsoft lists EDR solutions including Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, CrowdStrike Falcon, Trellix, Symantec, Sophos, SentinelOne Singularity and Cortex XDR. That list is not a performance ranking. Compare platforms on the attributes that affect your environment:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Supported Windows, macOS and Linux versions, plus server coverage.
  • Depth and quality of endpoint telemetry.
  • Near-real-time detection and alert clarity.
  • Manual and automated response controls.
  • Identity, email, cloud, firewall, SIEM and ticketing integrations.
  • Retention, advanced hunting and evidence export.
  • Policy management, sensor health and administration effort.
  • License structure and the exact features included in your plan.

Product names, plan entitlements, supported systems, pricing and partner availability change. Verify the current SKU, service-level agreement, response authority, retention period and geographic terms before purchase.

Bottom-line decision

Choose EDR operated internally when you can prove that qualified staff will monitor, investigate and respond across the hours your business needs. Choose MDR when that coverage does not exist or when leadership wants an external team accountable for triage and coordination. Choose both when you want a particular EDR platform but need a managed SOC to provide continuous human operation. The right option is the one that closes the monitoring and response gap your business actually has, not the one with the more impressive acronym.
