EDR is endpoint security software, MDR is a managed detection-and-response service run by analysts, and a SOC is the broader operating capability that monitors and responds to security events. The right purchase depends on which systems are covered, who investigates alerts, who is allowed to respond, and when that help is available.
The three terms, without the marketing blur
EDR: an endpoint technology layer
Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) continuously records and analyzes activity on devices such as employee laptops and servers. It supplies telemetry, detections, investigation context, threat-hunting data, and controls for actions such as isolating a device or removing a malicious file. NIST recognizes EDR as a formal cybersecurity term.

EDR is software. Buying it gives your team an agent, a console, and response controls; it does not by itself guarantee that a human analyst will review every alert, investigate incidents, or act overnight. Your organization remains responsible for staffing, triage, escalation, and decisions unless another service is contracted.
MDR: people operating detection and response
Managed Detection and Response (MDR) is a service that combines security technology with human expertise. Microsoft defines MDR as a service that uses advanced detection and rapid incident response to protect organizations from cyberthreats. An MDR team typically monitors alerts, hunts for threats, investigates incidents, escalates findings, and performs or guides response actions.

Many MDR offerings use EDR, XDR, SIEM data, or a mixture of tools. The important distinction is operational: you are paying a provider to run part of the detection-and-response process, not merely to license an agent. Microsoft’s managed-service documentation describes analysts managing an incident queue around the clock, investigating incidents, and either taking action or guiding the customer.
SOC: an operating capability
A Security Operations Center (SOC) is the team, processes, and facility responsible for monitoring and responding to security events. It can be an internal department, an outsourced provider, or a combination. A SOC may consume EDR telemetry alongside identity events, cloud activity, network traffic, SaaS and application logs, threat intelligence, and SIEM alerts.
“SOC” therefore does not identify one product or a fixed service level. A provider can market a narrow alert-monitoring service as a SOC, while another operates a full incident-response function. The contract determines what the SOC actually does.

What each purchase includes
| Purchase | You are primarily buying | Typical responsibility | Main limitation to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| EDR | Endpoint software, telemetry, detections, and remediation controls | Your team operates the console, investigates alerts, and executes response | Staffing, triage, and non-endpoint visibility may remain entirely with you |
| MDR | A managed detection-and-response service plus its supporting technology | Provider analysts monitor, investigate, escalate, and respond under contract | Covered assets, response authority, exclusions, and escalation rules differ by provider |
| Managed SOC | An external security-operations capability | Provider runs monitoring and response across the agreed data sources | Confirm log sources, retention, staffing model, service levels, and integration work |
Do you still need EDR when you buy MDR?
Usually, MDR needs endpoint telemetry to detect and investigate endpoint threats, so an MDR package commonly includes, resells, or integrates an EDR or XDR agent. That does not mean every MDR contract covers every device or every EDR feature. Some providers monitor an existing EDR deployment; others require their own agent.
Before signing, ask these specific questions:
- Which laptops, servers, virtual machines, and mobile devices must run an agent?
- Is the agent, its licensing, and its storage included in the MDR fee?
- Does the provider monitor all EDR detections or only incidents that meet a severity threshold?
- Can analysts isolate a device, kill a process, quarantine a file, or roll back changes without waiting for approval?
- What happens if an endpoint is offline, the agent is tampered with, or the license expires?
If you already have analysts who can operate an EDR console, EDR alone may be sufficient for endpoint coverage. If you lack continuous monitoring or incident expertise, MDR adds the people and operating process that the software does not provide.
Is MDR the same as a managed SOC?
No. The terms overlap, but their usual scope differs. MDR is a managed service centered on detecting and responding to threats, often beginning with endpoint or XDR telemetry. A managed SOC is an outsourced operating function that can coordinate many telemetry sources and processes.

| Question | MDR | Managed SOC |
|---|---|---|
| Primary focus | Threat detection, investigation, and response | Continuous security operations across agreed systems and data |
| Common data | Endpoint, XDR, and selected identity or cloud signals | Endpoint, identity, cloud, network, SaaS, application logs, SIEM, and threat intelligence |
| Operating model | Specialized managed service with defined response actions | Broader external team, processes, tooling, reporting, and coordination |
| What to verify | Response permissions, covered assets, hunting, escalation, and exclusions | Log onboarding, retention, staffing, integration work, service levels, and incident ownership |
A managed SOC can include MDR as one of its services. Conversely, an MDR provider may offer a broad set of integrations that resembles a SOC. Use the written scope, not the label, to decide what you are buying.
Which option fits your organization?
Choose EDR first when you have an operating security team
EDR fits organizations that already have analysts able to review detections, perform threat hunting, investigate evidence, and execute containment. It is also a practical starting point when endpoint visibility is the immediate gap and identity, cloud, and network monitoring are handled elsewhere.
Choose MDR when you need continuous response without building a 24/7 operation
MDR is aimed at organizations that want specialists to monitor and investigate alerts but do not want to recruit, train, and schedule a round-the-clock team. Confirm whether “24/7” means continuous alert triage only or includes hands-on remediation at any hour.

Choose a managed SOC when visibility must extend beyond endpoints
A managed SOC is more appropriate when incidents involve identity providers, cloud workloads, firewalls, network devices, SaaS applications, or large log estates. It can provide a single operating process across those sources, but onboarding and data-ingestion work must be priced and assigned.
Use a combined model when responsibilities are shared
Many organizations keep incident ownership internally while an MDR service or managed SOC supplies after-hours monitoring, specialist investigation, threat hunting, or surge capacity. Document exactly when the provider takes control and when it hands the incident back.

Ask every provider to complete a written responsibility matrix. It should identify the following for each asset and alert type:
Best Value
- Coverage: List endpoints, identities, cloud accounts, network devices, SaaS platforms, applications, and log sources included. State exclusions and minimum agent versions.
- People: Identify who triages alerts, performs threat hunting, investigates incidents, contacts your team, and writes the final report. Ask whether analysts are employees, contractors, or a mixed model.
- Response authority: Specify whether the provider may isolate endpoints, disable accounts, block indicators, change controls, or delete malicious artifacts. Record approval rules for routine and emergency actions.
- Availability: Define business-hours, follow-the-sun, or 24/7/365 coverage. Separate continuous alert monitoring from guaranteed hands-on remediation.
- Integration and data costs: List required agents, SIEM connectors, retention periods, transfer limits, and log-volume charges. Confirm who performs connector deployment and troubleshooting.
- Accountability: Put response-time targets, escalation paths, evidence preservation, incident reports, compliance reports, and service credits into the contract.
How pricing works in 2026
There is no honest universal 2026 price for MDR or a managed SOC. Public buyer guidance identifies endpoint count and log volume as major pricing drivers, and providers package analyst coverage, integrations, retention, and response authority differently.
Request a quote that separates recurring and variable charges:
- Per-endpoint or per-user licensing and agent costs
- SIEM, XDR, or other platform fees
- Ingested log volume and storage or retention
- Onboarding, connector development, and tuning
- Threat hunting, incident-response retainers, or out-of-hours remediation
- Compliance reporting and custom integrations
Compare proposals using the same asset inventory and a stated monthly log volume. A lower subscription can become more expensive if it excludes the data sources, retention, or response actions you actually need.
A practical selection process for a small business
- Inventory first: Count laptops, servers, cloud workloads, identities, network devices, and critical SaaS applications.
- Assign internal ownership: Name the person who receives escalations, approves disruptive actions, and coordinates recovery.
- Define minimum coverage: Decide whether endpoint-only monitoring is acceptable or whether identity, cloud, and network logs are essential.
- Test response permissions: During a proof of concept, verify that an analyst can investigate a simulated alert and perform the agreed containment action.
- Measure the handoff: Confirm how an incident reaches your team, what evidence arrives, and how unresolved questions are tracked.
- Buy the contract you can operate: Choose service hours, escalation rules, and reporting that match your staff availability and regulatory obligations.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Buying a console instead of coverage: EDR will not investigate alerts while your team is unavailable. Budget for analysts or a managed service.
- Treating “SOC” as a guarantee: Require a data-source list, analyst duties, and response-time commitments rather than relying on the label.
- Assuming 24/7 means unlimited intervention: Ask which actions happen automatically, which require approval, and what the provider does overnight.
- Ignoring non-endpoint signals: Identity or cloud compromise can remain invisible if the service only receives endpoint telemetry.
- Leaving evidence undefined: Specify alert records, timelines, forensic data, and incident reports you receive, plus retention periods.
- Failing to plan for an unavailable contact: Define backup approvers and emergency authority before an incident occurs.
Bottom line for the 2026 decision
Buy EDR when you need endpoint visibility and have people to operate it. Buy MDR when you need specialists to run detection and response without staffing a 24/7 team. Buy a managed SOC when you want an external operating capability that coordinates endpoint, identity, cloud, network, and application telemetry. In every case, judge the offer by its written coverage, analyst actions, response permissions, availability, data costs, and accountability—not by the acronym on the proposal.
