Providers may charge per endpoint, user, cloud resource, network, protected unit plus a platform fee, or SIEM event volume. The contract’s real value depends on what telemetry is monitored, how incidents are handled, which licenses and connectors you must supply, and whether overages or professional services are excluded.
Published examples illustrate the spread: a 2026 Red Canary/AWS Marketplace listing shows $120 per endpoint or $100 per account for 12 months, while a 2024 UK public-framework schedule from CGI prices service tiers by events per second (EPS), from £12,750 for up to 999 EPS to £21,699 for 5,000–9,999 EPS. Neither figure is a universal MDR average.

What MDR is—and what you are actually buying
MDR is a managed security service in which a provider collects telemetry from agreed data sources, monitors and investigates suspicious activity, hunts for threats, alerts your team and, depending on the plan and authorization, contains or remediates attacks. CIS defines its MxDR service as “a managed cybersecurity monitoring, detection, investigation, threat-correlation, alerting, and remediation-guidance service delivered through the CIS Security Operations Center (SOC).”
That definition matters because “MDR” can describe very different levels of work. One contract may stop at analyst investigation and recommendations; another may include remote isolation of a host, disabling an account or active remediation. The unit on the invoice also does not tell you which systems are protected. A low per-endpoint price can be poor value if identity, email, cloud and network telemetry are outside scope.

How MDR providers calculate price
Ask for the billing unit, its counting rule and the treatment of growth or temporary usage in writing. The common structures below are not interchangeable.

Rapid7 states that its MDR pricing is based on protected endpoints, servers and networks, not SIEM data volume or the number of incidents requiring response. That approach makes the bill more predictable only if the contract defines those protected units precisely.
What a standard MDR contract can include
In a mature service, the recurring fee pays for people, technology and operating procedures rather than a dashboard alone. Confirm each item as “included,” “limited,” or “available at an additional rate.”

Continuous monitoring and triage
- 24/7 SOC monitoring, alert intake and severity assessment.
- Analyst investigation, correlation of events and threat-intelligence enrichment.
- Case tickets, customer notifications, dashboards and periodic service reports.
Threat hunting and detection work
- Proactive threat hunting beyond automated alerts.
- Detection tuning or engineering for the supported products and data sources.
- Root-cause analysis and recommendations for reducing recurrence.
Containment, remediation and breach support
Some plans add remote containment, active remediation or breach-response assistance. Rapid7’s package table lists 24x7x365 SOC monitoring, SOC and incident-response experts, unlimited incident and breach response, proactive threat hunting, active remote containment, active remediation, EDR/NDR, deployment assistance and support for third-party tools as package-dependent capabilities. Sophos lists 24/7 hunting, full-scale incident response, remote disruption, containment and neutralization, root-cause advice, weekly or monthly reports and a case dashboard.
“Incident response included” is therefore not enough language for an order form. Specify whether the provider investigates only, performs remote actions, supplies an on-site or forensic team, supports breach notification and remains engaged until recovery.
Response authority: recommendations versus action
The most consequential contract boundary is who can change your environment. CIS states that it investigates and provides recommendations, while the member “retains sole authority and responsibility for approving and implementing any response actions.” Under that model, analysts may identify a compromised host but your staff must isolate it.

Other services can act remotely, but usually under a severity threshold, pre-approved playbook or named-contact workflow. Ask the provider to document:

- Which actions are automatic, which require approval and which are prohibited.
- How emergency approval works outside your business hours.
- What evidence and audit trail accompanies every action, and how mistaken containment is reversed.
Telemetry, licenses and onboarding obligations
MDR quality is constrained by the data it can access. A proposal should list supported endpoint, identity, email, cloud, network and SaaS products, the connectors required and the retention period used for investigation.
Microsoft Defender Experts example
Microsoft Defender Experts MDR requires at least one eligible Defender product or Entra ID P2 licensed and deployed in active mode. Its Plan 2 requirements include supported EDR on all endpoints, email and identity protection for all users, cloud-workload protection where applicable, Sentinel connectors, workspace access, 90-day retention for relevant data and UEBA. If those prerequisites are absent, the subscription price does not represent a ready-to-operate service.

Customer work during onboarding
CIS requires supported data sources, connectivity, licenses, escalation contacts and customer cooperation. Clarify who installs agents, configures connectors, grants workspace access, tests detections, supplies asset inventories and approves response playbooks. One-time deployment labor may be separate from the recurring MDR fee.

Small wording differences can materially change annual cost. Red Canary measures endpoint usage monthly, separates servers and workstations and reviews true-ups every three months. SOClogix counts units on the last calendar day, bills coverage in arrears and excludes devices absent for more than 30 consecutive days.

Before signing, obtain written definitions for:
- Virtual machines, containers, ephemeral cloud workloads and cloned images.
- Dormant, disabled or duplicate accounts; service accounts; guests; and shared mailboxes.
- Cloud tenants, subscriptions, resources, network sensors and branch offices.
- Temporary devices, seasonal workers and burst log volume during an incident.
- The measurement date, averaging method, grace period and notice before an overage invoice.
A quote should show the committed quantity, unit rate, overage rate, minimum billable quantity and true-up frequency. The Red Canary example advertises a $10 per-unit overage, but that figure is tied to its 2026 listing and should not be generalized to other providers.
Term, renewal and data handling
Red Canary publishes 12-, 24- and 36-month options, with advertised savings of up to 50% and 67% for longer terms. Those discounts may be attractive, but usage entitlements expire when the contract ends. Confirm whether unused capacity rolls over, how renewal pricing is set and what notice is required to cancel.
Your order form should also state:
- Minimum quantities and the process for adding or removing units.
- Permitted annual price increases and the notice period.
- Early-termination charges, suspension rights and service-credit rules.
- Data location, log ownership, export format and assistance with migration.
- Deletion deadlines for telemetry, cases and backups after termination.
Exclusions and add-on services that change the total
CGI explicitly excludes SIEM deployment, configuration and licensing from its published MDR service prices. Rapid7 offers managed digital-risk protection, attack-surface management and continuous red teaming as add-ons. ArmorPoint’s agreement excludes technology implementation, hardware and software purchases, migration, forensic work, breach notification and some remediation, and limits support for end-of-life systems.
These are not minor legal details. A service can be inexpensive because the buyer must separately fund SIEM licensing, deployment engineers, forensic investigators or breach counsel. Request a schedule of professional-service rates, travel and on-site charges, emergency-response retainers, data egress, storage, custom detection work and unsupported-product fees.
Service levels and escalation terms to compare
Do not accept “24/7” as the entire SLA. Compare the operational targets that determine whether help arrives when needed:
- Alert acknowledgement and customer-notification targets by severity.
- Time to analyst investigation, containment recommendation and authorized action.
- Escalation channels, named contacts and after-hours approval.
- Coverage during holidays, provider outages and customer maintenance windows.
- Reporting cadence, dashboard availability and incident-postmortem delivery.
- Service credits, exclusions from the SLA and the evidence used to measure performance.
A practical MDR contract comparison worksheet
Use one row per provider and require an answer in the same unit and time period. “Not stated” is a finding that needs clarification, not an assumption that the feature is included.

Questions to ask before signing
- Show the annual price at our current inventory and at 20% growth, including every platform, connector, storage and response charge.
- Define exactly what counts as an endpoint, user, cloud resource, network and EPS, including temporary and dormant assets.
- List every telemetry source covered on day one and every license we must already own.
- Provide the incident workflow for a critical alert, from detection through containment, approval, remediation and closure.
- State what “incident response” includes and what requires a separate retainer or hourly rate.
- Explain true-ups, overage notice, minimum commitments, renewal increases and unused-capacity treatment.
- Specify SLA targets, after-hours escalation, data location, export format and deletion timing.
Bottom line
MDR cost is best evaluated as a complete operating contract, not a headline price per endpoint or user. Compare the protected units, telemetry and licenses, analyst activities, response authority, counting rules, overages, term mechanics, SLAs and exclusions in the same worksheet. Published prices such as Red Canary’s 2026 unit examples, Sophos’s £5.41-per-user monthly listing and CGI’s 2024 EPS schedule are useful reference points, but your final cost depends on the scope and obligations written into your order form.
