MCP Registries in 2026: What’s Canonical, What’s Big, and What You Can Install

The official MCP Registry is the canonical place to check published server metadata and publisher namespaces. It is not the same thing as a human-friendly directory, an install guide, or a safety audit. For discovery, directories such as Glama add searchable listings and setup information; for a decision about what to connect, verify the server itself and your MCP client’s requirements.

What “MCP registry” means in 2026

The term covers two different jobs. The official MCP Registry is a shared metadata and namespace-publishing layer: it stores standardized information such as server names and package or endpoint locations, and makes that metadata available through a REST API. Its documentation says it is not intended to be consumed directly by host applications. That leaves room for client-facing directories to add browsing, comparisons, installation examples, or deployment services.

The official documentation currently labels the Registry as being in preview and warns that breaking changes or data resets may occur. Treat it as a source for published metadata and provenance, not as a permanent compatibility guarantee.

How the main options differ

Service or layer Best-supported role What the evidence does not establish
Official MCP Registry Canonical metadata, publisher namespace checks, and API access. Registry documentation It is not a direct host-application directory or a code-safety audit. Its preview status also means the interface and data may change. Registry documentation
Glama Human-oriented discovery with richer connector details; Glama also describes managed operations and setup examples for Claude Desktop and Claude Code. Glama directory Glama feature information Its listing count is a vendor-reported index snapshot, not a verified count of maintained or installable servers. Smithery, mcp.so, and MCPFind A June 28, 2026 MCPFind comparison characterizes Smithery as offering hosting and a CLI, mcp.so as community-contributed, and MCPFind as providing client configurations and setup guides. MCPFind comparison Those descriptions are not confirmed here against each service’s current first-party documentation. Do not treat them as an up-to-date feature matrix.

What the big server count does—and doesn’t—mean

Glama reported 95,347 MCP servers in a directory snapshot last indexed October 3, 2026. That is Glama’s own count at that date, not the official Registry’s total and not an independent audit of usability, maintenance, or successful installation. Glama directory

No comparable official-registry count or independently verified cross-directory usability figure is established here. Counts from different directories should not be ranked unless their dates, inclusion rules, and indexing methods are known and comparable.

What namespace verification tells you

The Registry documents GitHub, DNS, and HTTP ownership checks for publisher namespaces. These checks are provenance signals: they help establish that a publisher controls the namespace associated with a listing. They are not a review of the server’s code, permissions, maintenance quality, or behavior after installation. Registry documentation

The Registry’s stated focus is authentication and metadata. Package registries handle their own scanning, and downstream aggregators may add checks of their own. A label such as “verified” therefore needs to be read according to the provider’s stated method; namespace verification and package scanning are different things. Registry documentation

How to find and evaluate a server

  1. Start with the product’s official documentation. If you need a server for a particular product or service, check that vendor’s documentation first. Then use the official MCP Registry to inspect the published metadata and namespace; its API supports searching and retrieving server records. Registry documentation
  2. Use a directory for browsing and setup context. A directory can make candidates easier to compare and may show client-specific examples. Read how it defines any security label, popularity figure, or health score rather than assuming those labels mean the same thing across services.
  3. Inspect the actual server before connecting. Check the source repository and package, recent maintenance, declared tools and permissions, required credentials, and transport. A registry listing does not replace package-level scanning or your own review. Registry documentation
  4. Follow instructions for your specific client. Glama provides examples for Claude Desktop and Claude Code, but those are not universal instructions for every MCP client. Confirm the configuration format and requirements in your client’s documentation, then test in a controlled environment. Glama setup examples

Which registry fits your workflow?

  • You care most about provenance or publishing: use the official Registry to check standardized metadata and namespace information.
  • You need to discover candidates: use a directory with a useful search and comparison interface, while treating its counts and labels as that provider’s own signals.
  • You need hosting or operations: Glama describes managed hosting and production-control features; confirm the current scope and pricing before relying on them. Glama feature information
  • You need a dependable installation decision: combine metadata and directory guidance with a review of the package, permissions, credentials, transport, maintenance, and client-specific setup. No listing alone answers all of those questions.
