The ally who became a villain and changed Wonder Woman’s trajectory is Maxwell Lord. His mind control of Superman forced Diana to make a decision with lasting personal and public consequences. As of an October 2, 2026 report, Lord had not appeared in DC’s Absolute Universe; that is a time-bounded report, not a guarantee about later issues.
Who is Maxwell Lord?
Lord first entered this story as a businessman and associate of the Justice League International, serving as its press liaison while manipulating events around the team’s formation. He later became an open adversary, with plans directed at controlling the metahuman community. DC’s retrospective traces that shift from behind-the-scenes operator to villain: DC’s account of Maxwell Lord.

How did the killing change Diana’s trajectory?
The consequences extended beyond the confrontation. DC says the killing changed public perception of Diana, strained her relationships with Superman and Batman, and led her to question her mission. Her next series made the fallout its starting point: DC’s official description of Wonder Woman #1 (2006) says, “One year after the execution of Maxwell Lord and the earth-shattering events of INFINITE CRISIS, the DCU is still struggling to come to terms with its most powerful heroine.” The same description asks whether Diana is “a martyr or a murderer.” DC’s Wonder Woman #1 (2006) listing.
