Washington is being considered for a starting role with the Dallas Mavericks in 2026–27, but he has not been named a starter. Head coach Dusty May said Washington is “certainly in the mix” because he can play multiple positions, and May said Dallas was not expected to settle on a starting five soon. This is a training-camp snapshot, not an opening-night lineup announcement.
Why Washington is in the conversation
May’s stated reason is versatility. “If you want to play a small lineup, you can play the five. He can play the three for the bigger lineup,” the coach said. That flexibility gives May options to use Washington at center in a small lineup or at small forward alongside a bigger frontcourt.
May also cited Washington’s physicality, defensive understanding and instincts, as well as his ability to punish mismatches. Washington has described his own range of contributions as guarding perimeter players and bigs, screening, handling the ball in pick-and-roll and taking advantage of mismatches.
Washington’s Dallas starting history
Washington’s past usage makes a starting role plausible, though it does not guarantee one in 2026–27. The Dallas Sports Journal reported on October 2, 2026, that he started 137 of the 142 regular-season games he played for Dallas after the team acquired him from Charlotte in February 2024. CBS Sports/RotoWire separately reported that he came off the bench four times in 113 Dallas regular-season appearances over the previous two years. Those are different samples and should not be combined.

Recent production and shooting
Dallas Sports Journal’s season figures show Washington averaged 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game in 2024–25, then 14.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 2025–26, when he played 56 games. His three-point shooting moved from 38.1% (91-of-239) in 2024–25 to 32.5% (76-of-234) in 2025–26. These are past results, not a forecast or an explanation of the lineup decision. The report notes he missed time in both seasons; that history does not establish a current injury.
What could affect his role
There is frontcourt competition to consider. CBS Sports/RotoWire reported that rookie Morez Johnson’s addition could complicate the frontcourt picture, but did not report that Johnson had displaced Washington or secured a particular role. The available reporting does not establish two confirmed candidates in a head-to-head race, nor does it identify the Mavericks’ opening-night five.

As camp continues, the practical questions are how May wants to balance size and spacing, which matchups call for Washington at the three or five, and how the coach weighs Washington’s recent shooting alongside his defense and ability to cover multiple roles. Those are factors to watch, not a confirmed prediction.

Washington has said he is focused on team results rather than whether his name is announced among the starters: “For me, my biggest thing is winning. Whether I’m starting or not, I just want to win.” He added that he believes he can make an impact either way. He also said, “I’ve been on so many losing teams. I’ve been to the playoffs one time in my career.”

May put a similar emphasis on who closes games: “Or if I could finish a game versus have my name called and start a lineup, I’d rather finish the game as well.” His comment underscores that starting status and a player’s importance in a game are not necessarily the same thing.
