Before ordering, read the written policy for the exact mattress, seller, and purchase channel. Confirm when the trial clock starts, whether a minimum break-in period applies, what condition the mattress must be in, who pays for pickup or shipping, which fees are deducted, how refunds work, and whether sale or clearance terms are different.
A “sleep trial,” “at-home trial,” or “free trial” is a seller’s contract offer—not a general federal right to return an online mattress. The policy can make an uncomfortable mattress returnable even when it has no defect, while a warranty generally addresses specified material or workmanship defects. Treat the trial and warranty as separate protections.

What a mattress trial period actually is
A mattress trial period is the time a seller gives you to use a mattress at home and decide whether to keep it. Depending on the policy, you may be able to return it because of comfort, support, heat, movement, noise, or another personal fit issue even when the mattress is not defective.

Sellers use several labels for the same basic idea: “trial,” “sleep trial,” “free trial,” and “at-home trial.” The label does not establish the terms. One seller may count nights from delivery, another may require a minimum number of nights before accepting a return, and another may charge for pickup or restocking. The written terms for your specific order control.

Trial versus warranty
A trial answers, “Do I want to keep this mattress?” A warranty answers, “Does this mattress have a covered defect under the warranty’s definition?” A trial may permit a return simply because the mattress feels wrong for you. A warranty may provide repair, replacement, or another remedy for listed material or workmanship problems, subject to its exclusions and procedures. A warranty is not a substitute for a trial, and a trial is not a warranty.
“Free” does not necessarily mean zero cost
In most online transactions, you pay for the mattress up front. “Free trial” commonly means you can test it at home without paying a separate testing charge, not that no payment is taken or that every return cost is waived. Return shipping, pickup, restocking, removal, or nonrefundable delivery charges can reduce the amount refunded. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises shoppers to determine whether a full refund is available, who pays return shipping, how long they have to act, and whether a restocking fee applies.
Is there a federal three-day mattress return right?
Do not assume that an online mattress purchase automatically has a three-day federal cancellation period. The FTC Cooling-Off Rule covers certain sales made at a buyer’s home or at a temporary location, but it excludes transactions made entirely online, by mail, or by telephone. For an online mattress, your rights and deadlines usually come from the seller’s written policy and applicable state law, not from a blanket federal “three-day mattress return” rule.

1. Trial length and the start event
Identify the number of nights or days and the event that starts the clock. Many policies begin on delivery, not on the date you first sleep on the mattress. Record the delivery date and calculate the last day on which a return request may be submitted. Ask whether the final day is the last day to contact the seller or the day the mattress must already be in transit.
Sleep Foundation estimated in an article updated July 15, 2025, that 90 to 120 nights is a typical mattress sleep-trial range. That is a publisher’s estimate, not a legal standard or a promise from any seller; some offers are shorter and some are longer.
2. Minimum break-in period
Some sellers require you to keep the mattress for a minimum period before opening a return. The reason is practical: your body may need time to adapt to a different firmness or support profile. Sleep Foundation says adaptation can take around a month and suggests trying a mattress for several weeks when the seller does not impose a shorter or different minimum. Do not wait past the return deadline while experimenting. Write down both the earliest eligible return date and the final request date.
3. Who is eligible
Check whether the offer applies only to original purchasers, only to mattresses bought directly from the seller, or also to purchases through an authorized retailer. Look for model-specific exclusions, restrictions on adjustable bases or accessories, and rules for gifts or transferred ownership. A policy available on a manufacturer’s website may not apply to a mattress bought from a furniture store or marketplace.
4. Sale, clearance, and promotional purchases
Sale and clearance terms can differ from standard terms. The FTC specifically recommends checking sale-item policies. Look for “final sale,” shortened trial periods, nonrefundable promotional bundles, and requirements to return accessories with the mattress. A discount does not automatically remove return rights, but the seller’s stated terms may create different conditions.

5. Mattress condition
Most companies require a returned mattress to be clean and free of stains, tears, burns, infestation, or other damage. Some require use on an appropriate foundation or base. A mattress protector can help prevent accidental stains or damage, but using one does not guarantee approval; the seller’s inspection and written conditions still govern. Ask whether normal body impressions are acceptable and whether damage to the packaging matters after the mattress has been expanded.

Find out exactly how the return happens. Possible arrangements include a seller-scheduled pickup, customer-paid freight, a prepaid label, inspection at your home, donation to a charity, or recycling with proof. Large mattresses are difficult to package and ship yourself. If the seller requires you to arrange transport, obtain the carrier requirements and estimated cost before buying.
7. Money refunded and deductions
Read every fee line, not just the word “free.” Check for:
- Return shipping or freight charges.
- Pickup fees.
- Restocking fees.
- Nonrefundable delivery, setup, removal, or white-glove services.
- Exchange fees.
- Price differences when exchanging for another model.
- Taxes or regional charges that are handled differently on a refund.
- Refund timing after pickup, inspection, donation, or recycling.
The FTC’s consumer guidance is direct: “The site must say whether you’re able to return the item for a full refund.” Treat a refund described as “full” cautiously if another section lists nonrefundable delivery or removal charges.
8. Number of returns or exchanges
A policy may allow one exchange, one return, or a limited number of combined transactions per purchase or household. An exchange can also end the original trial clock or start a new, shorter clock. Confirm whether choosing a different firmness or size uses your only return opportunity.

How to compare two mattress offers
Put competing policies in a table before you order. Use “not stated” when a term is absent rather than assuming it is free or unlimited.
| Comparison point | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Clock and duration | How many nights? Does the clock start at delivery, shipment, or another event? What is the final request date? | A longer number is useless if the clock starts before you can use the mattress or if the request deadline is easy to miss. |
| Minimum use | Must you keep the mattress for a specified number of nights? | You may be ineligible for an early return even when the fit is clearly wrong. |
| Eligibility | Does it cover direct purchases, retailer purchases, the exact model, and the original buyer? | Policies often change by channel and product. |
| Condition | Are cleanliness, stains, damage, a protector, or a specific base required? | Damage can void an otherwise available return. |
| Logistics | Who arranges pickup or shipping? Is inspection, donation, or recycling proof required? | Large-item transport can be expensive and difficult to arrange independently. |
| Refund | Are shipping, pickup, restocking, delivery, setup, or removal charges deducted? When is the refund issued? | The amount returned may be less than the amount charged. |
| Limits | How many exchanges or returns are allowed per order or household? | A first exchange may use the only return opportunity. |
| Sale terms | Are clearance, bundles, coupons, or other promotions excluded or subject to different rules? | A promotional price can carry separate conditions. |
Published policy examples and what they show
The examples below illustrate why the night count must be read with the other terms. Seller policies can change, so verify the live policy for your purchase channel immediately before ordering.
| Seller | Stated terms | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Puffy | The official page describes a 101-night trial. It requires at least 14 nights before starting the return process, says the return must be exercised directly with Puffy no later than the 101st day following delivery, limits returns to a lifetime maximum of two per household, and says it arranges a free return and issues the refund once the return is complete. | The policy is restricted to original purchasers of genuine products bought directly from Puffy’s website. These are Puffy’s stated terms, not an industry standard. |
| Tempur-Pedic | The official help page describes a 90-night trial beginning on delivery for qualifying direct purchases made online, by phone, or at a Tempur-Pedic Flagship Store. It recommends trying the mattress for at least 30 days and lists a nonrefundable $175 plus tax return fee. | Retailer purchases and most non-mattress products are excluded. The page says the TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed Sleep System is included and that returns are not accepted after the 90-night period. |
| Mattress Firm | Search-result text describes a 120-night trial, one exchange and/or return per purchase, and a $149 exchange fee. | The policy page did not expose its policy text in the available material. Verify the current seller page before relying on these details or treating them as current. |
These examples produce very different practical outcomes. A 101-night offer with a 14-night minimum and a two-return household limit is not equivalent to a 90-night offer with a $175-plus-tax return fee. A 120-night headline is not enough to evaluate an offer when the underlying policy has not been confirmed.
How to test a mattress without losing your return rights
- Record the dates. Save the delivery date, calculate the earliest eligible return date, and mark the final day to submit a request. Set a reminder at least two weeks before the deadline.
- Protect the mattress. Use a protector that fits securely and follow the seller’s base requirements. Keep pets, food, drinks, and sharp objects away from the bed.
- Use your normal sleep routine. Sleep in your usual positions and use the pillows and bedding you normally use. A brief showroom test cannot reveal how the mattress feels after repeated nights.
- Keep a simple log. Note comfort, pressure points, heat retention, motion isolation, noise, edge support, and ease of movement. These are observations to help your decision, not guarantees that the mattress will suit another sleeper.
- Check for physical changes. Record new sagging, unusual odors that persist, tears, stains, or other damage. Photograph any problem and keep the date-stamped images.
- Contact the seller before the deadline. If you are unsure, ask whether the return window is measured by the date of your request, pickup, or receipt. Obtain the answer in writing.
Trying a mattress for several weeks can make your assessment more reliable, but never let an adaptation period push you beyond the policy’s last request date.
What to do when you decide to return
Step 1: Re-read the policy for your channel
Confirm that your order qualifies, the minimum period has passed, and the mattress is within the return window. Check whether accessories, bases, or promotional items must be returned together.

Step 2: Submit the request through the required method
Some sellers require an online form, phone call, account request, or email. Use the specified method and save the confirmation number, timestamp, and representative’s name if applicable.
Step 3: Ask for the complete cost calculation
Request a written statement of every deduction: pickup, freight, restocking, delivery, removal, taxes, or exchange charges. If the seller says the return is free, ask whether that means both pickup and the full purchase price are refunded.
Step 4: Follow preparation instructions
Do not move the mattress to a curb or ship it independently unless the seller instructs you to do so. Follow directions about wrapping, access, stairs, elevators, and keeping the mattress available for inspection.

Step 5: Document handoff and refund
Keep the pickup receipt, donation or recycling certificate if required, photographs of the condition, and tracking information. Monitor the refund to the original payment method and escalate in writing if the stated processing period passes.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Confusing delivery with first use: A delivery-start policy can run while the mattress remains unopened. Write down the start event.
- Assuming the retailer has the manufacturer’s trial: A direct-purchase policy may not transfer to a retailer order. Compare the channel named in the terms with your checkout page.
- Ignoring the minimum nights: An early request may be rejected even when the policy advertises a long trial.
- Treating “free return” as a full refund: Nonrefundable delivery, removal, or taxes may still be deducted.
- Letting stains or damage occur: A protector helps reduce risk, but it does not override the seller’s inspection rules.
- Waiting for the last day: A failed web form, holiday closure, or delayed response can leave no time to correct the request.
- Using an exchange without checking the consequences: The exchange may incur a fee, require a price adjustment, or consume the only return allowed.
- Relying on a search snippet: Search-result text can be incomplete or outdated. Read the live policy page and save a copy.
Questions to ask customer service before checkout
Use precise questions rather than asking only, “Do you have a trial?”
- What date and event start the trial clock for my order?
- What is the earliest date I may request a return, and what is the final date?
- Does this exact model and size qualify?
- Does the policy apply to this seller and purchase channel?
- Are sale, clearance, bundle, or coupon purchases treated differently?
- What condition must the mattress be in, and is a specific base required?
- Who arranges and pays for pickup or shipping?
- What fees are deducted from the refund?
- How many exchanges or returns are allowed for this order and household?
- When does the refund begin processing, and when should it appear on my payment method?
Ask the representative to point to the written clause or send the answer by email. Keep the response with your order records.
Bottom line for comparing mattress trials
The best policy is not automatically the one with the most nights. Compare the clock, minimum break-in, eligibility, condition rules, return logistics, deductions, refund timing, and exchange limits as one package. For an online purchase, the seller’s written terms—not an assumed federal three-day right—determine how much flexibility you actually have.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a mattress trial period really a “free trial”?
Usually, you pay for the mattress up front. “Free” may describe the at-home testing period, while return shipping, pickup, restocking, delivery, removal, or other charges can still apply. Check the written policy to see whether the refund is truly full and who pays return costs.
