What is known about the reported offer?
The reports named ABG, a privately held brand-licensing company, as the interested party. Bloomberg Law also reported a possible value of about $6 billion or more. Mattel’s spokesperson told Bloomberg Law that the company does not comment on market rumors or speculation; ABG did not respond to the outlet’s emailed request. How did the stock move?
The reported share-price gains were intraday snapshots, not a single confirmed closing figure. Reuters said Mattel closed Wednesday at $12.66 and cited a market capitalization of about $3.62 billion. Bloomberg Law reported that the stock rose as much as 36% on Thursday, then was up 23% at $15.53 at about 2:40 p.m. New York time. A separate CNBC-carrying report described a nearly 20% rise. What does the leadership change have to do with the report?
Mattel separately announced on September 30 that Roger Lynch, then a Mattel board member and Condé Nast CEO, would become chairman effective October 2 and CEO on or before November 2. Ynon Kreiz was to step down as chairman and CEO effective October 2. The company announcement confirms the succession but does not address the takeover report.
