Neither matte nor glossy is universally easier to read outdoors. Matte surfaces spread reflections so reflected objects are less distinct, but that scattering can add haze or soften text. Glossy surfaces can keep the image looking clearer while showing sharper, mirror-like reflections. On a phone, brightness and reflection handling matter alongside the cover-glass finish, and the available evidence does not establish a controlled, same-phone outdoor comparison.
What matte and glossy mean for outdoor reading
Matte and glossy describe how the screen surface handles light, not the brightness or quality of the display itself. As a general surface principle, monitor-testing guidance from RTINGS explains that glossy finishes tend to show direct reflections more distinctly, while matte surfaces scatter reflected light across a broader area. That can make a reflected object less mirror-like, but the scattered light may appear as haze, grain, or a softened image. This is a general optical comparison, not a phone-specific benchmark.

Matte does not mean reflection-free, and scattering does not guarantee better readability in every position. The effect depends on the treatment and the path of the light. A matte surface may help when distinct reflections are distracting; a glossy surface may suit readers who prioritize image clarity and can adjust the phone to avoid reflections.

Outdoor readability depends on more than surface texture. The display must emit enough light to remain legible, and its cover glass and treatments affect how much ambient light returns toward the viewer. DXOMARK says its smartphone display evaluation includes sunlight use, but its description does not establish a matte-versus-glossy phone result: DXOMARK smartphone display testing.

Anti-glare scattering and anti-reflective coatings are different approaches. Scattering changes the direction of reflected light; an anti-reflective treatment aims to reduce the amount reflected from the cover glass. Corning describes both approaches and reports up to 95% reflection reduction and 80% glare reduction for its Gorilla Matte Pro treatment. Those are manufacturer-reported figures for that treatment, not results for matte phone displays as a category: Corning Gorilla Matte Pro.
Corning also says a special anti-reflective coating on cover glass reduces reflections by more than 75%. This is a company claim about its coating, not an independent phone comparison: Corning’s anti-reflective coating explanation.

How to compare phones you are considering
Look at the actual phone and its display in the kind of outdoor light where you expect to use it. Compare more than whether the screen is called matte or glossy:

- Reflection visibility: Are nearby objects or the bright sky reflected sharply in your usual viewing position?
- Brightness outdoors: Is the screen bright enough to read, and does it sustain useful brightness rather than only reaching a brief peak?
- Clarity: Are small text and fine details sharp, or do haze, grain, or sparkle interfere?
- Actual surface: Check the specific model’s cover glass and any screen protector; a protector can change the viewing experience.
- Viewing angle and repositioning: Can you tilt or move the phone to reduce reflections without making the screen awkward to view?
These are practical comparison axes, not a published scoring system. The evidence here does not include a controlled outdoor test of matte and glossy versions of the same phone.

Should you try a matte screen protector?
A matte anti-glare protector is a reversible way to see whether scattered reflections are less distracting on your own phone. Choose one made for the exact phone model. Before keeping the protector, check small text, photos, and the screen at your normal brightness in both shade and direct daylight. If the reduction in distinct reflections is outweighed by softness or haze, remove it and use the phone’s original surface.

What published figures do—and do not—show
Published reflection-reduction numbers can describe a particular coating without answering which phone finish is easier to read outdoors. For example, a 2020 article in the Journal of the Society for Information Display reports approximately 4% front-surface reflectance for typical cover glass versus approximately 0.40% for Gorilla Glass DX with a durable anti-reflective coating. Its cited comparison is between Dell Latitude tablets, not phones and not matte versus glossy finishes: Journal of the Society for Information Display, 2020.
