Start with Performance Mode on a base PS5. Insomniac designed it around a 60-frame-per-second target with ray tracing and described it as the intended default, according to developer comments reported by TechRadar. Choose the graphics-optimization option only if extra image detail matters more to you than a smoother, more responsive presentation.
On PS5 Pro, Performance Pro targets 60 fps with standard Fidelity visuals reconstructed through PSSR, while Fidelity Pro targets 30 fps and adds advanced ray tracing, as described in Push Square’s launch-period review. Neither target should be read as a guarantee that every scene is permanently locked to that rate.

Before changing settings, update the game. Insomniac’s version 1.002.000 patch added QSSR to the PS5 version and enables it by default, improving image detail and stability. QSSR and PS5 Pro’s PSSR are upscaling technologies; they are not frame-rate modes.
Marvel’s Wolverine graphics modes at a glance
The right setting depends on your console, whether you value motion clarity or visual effects, and whether your television supports variable refresh rate. The documented choices are:

The game launched exclusively for PS5 and PS5 Pro on September 15, 2026, according to PlayStation’s official game page. Menu names or available choices can change with updates, so use the current labels shown on your console rather than relying on screenshots from pre-release coverage.
Base PS5: Performance or graphics optimization?
Performance Mode
Performance Mode is the strongest starting point for most base-PS5 players. Senior Project Director Jess Reiner-Reed told TechRadar that the team wanted the game to run at 60 fps in Performance Mode from early development and said, “The game feels super smooth.” Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald also described the development goal as 60 fps with ray tracing in the default presentation.
Those statements establish a design target and developer intent, not an independently measured post-patch benchmark. Busy scenes, effects-heavy combat and later patches can produce variation. A 60 fps target still gives you the clearest reason to begin with this mode: camera movement, traversal and combat input generally feel more immediate than in a 30 fps presentation.

The alternative base-PS5 choice favors graphical optimization. The reviewed official sources do not provide a dependable internal-resolution figure, a complete list of image-quality changes or a frame-rate measurement for every scene. Do not treat online claims about a specific pixel count as an official specification unless they identify the console, mode, game version and measurement method.
Choose this option when you notice detail and lighting more than motion smoothness—for example, when you play slowly, use a large screen from a close seating distance, or dislike the compromises required to pursue a higher frame-rate target. You can switch modes and compare the same location or combat encounter; there is no need to restart the game simply to test the setting.

PS5 Pro: Performance Pro versus Fidelity Pro
Performance Pro
On PS5 Pro, Performance Pro is described as a 60 fps target that uses standard Fidelity visuals reconstructed through PSSR. This is the practical middle ground for a Pro owner who wants the responsiveness associated with Performance Mode without giving up the game’s higher-quality visual treatment.
PSSR is PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, Sony’s AI-assisted reconstruction system for PS5 Pro. It uses information from rendered frames to produce a higher-detail output than the game would normally render internally. PSSR does not itself set the frame rate; the selected mode, scene complexity and display settings remain separate factors.
Fidelity Pro
Fidelity Pro targets 30 fps and adds advanced ray-tracing capabilities. Ray tracing can improve how light, reflections and other effects are represented, but the benefit is exchanged for the slower frame cadence. A 30 fps target is appropriate if advanced lighting is your priority and you are comfortable with less fluid camera motion and input response.
Push Square’s review describes these Pro behaviors, but it does not establish a universal locked frame rate or publish a complete resolution table. Treat “60 fps” and “30 fps” as mode targets, not promises that every shot, traversal segment or combat sequence will remain exactly at that number.
Ray tracing, QSSR and PSSR: what each term means
Ray tracing
Ray tracing is a rendering technique that calculates selected lighting or reflection effects by tracing simulated light paths. In Marvel’s Wolverine, ray tracing is part of the base-PS5 Performance Mode target described by Insomniac, while PS5 Pro’s Fidelity Pro adds advanced ray-tracing capabilities. The sources do not identify every ray-traced effect or provide a measured performance cost for each setting.

QSSR on PS5
Insomniac’s October 6, 2026 version 1.002.000 notes say: “With our latest update (v1.002.000), Marvel’s Wolverine now uses QSSR for improvements to both image details and image stability on PS5.” The note says QSSR is enabled by default. The same update also addresses stability, crashes, bugs, visual polish, accessibility issues and localization issues.

In its October 1, 2026 technology announcement, PlayStation describes it as a new performance tier of AI upscaling developed from Project Amethyst. The announcement says its streamlined neural network and hand-tuned implementation are intended to improve image detail and stability on PS5. It identifies Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first titles to use QSSR.
PSSR on PS5 Pro
The official Marvel’s Wolverine FAQ identifies support for the PS5 Pro’s PSSR feature and separately notes that the post-launch PS5 version was patched to use QSSR. PSSR and QSSR are related reconstruction technologies for different hardware contexts; neither is an alternate name for Performance, Fidelity, Performance Pro or Fidelity Pro.
Insomniac Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald described QSSR this way: “QSSR adds more pixel-level clarity and stability to our environments, bringing out extra detail amidst the busy streets of Madripoor, the dense alleyways of Shinjuku, and many other areas across Logan’s epic journey.” That description indicates the intended image-quality benefit, not a numerical sharpness increase or a guaranteed resolution.
How to use VRR and 120 Hz mode
VRR can make fluctuations less noticeable by allowing the display’s refresh timing to follow the console’s changing output. Insomniac’s VRR support article, dated November 19, 2025, says its PS5 titles support VRR with the latest game and system updates. It also says the main effect of the PS5 VRR system setting is to slightly increase dynamic image-resolution targets.

With a 120 Hz-capable display, 120 Hz Display Mode active and VRR enabled, Insomniac describes the result as variable and uncapped. Depending on gameplay, output can exceed the selected 30 or 60 fps target by 50% or more. That is a variable range, not a sustained frame-rate promise.
Required equipment and settings
- A television or monitor that supports VRR.
- An HDMI input on that display that supports the required high-refresh signal.
- A PS5-compatible HDMI 2.1 cable is recommended by Insomniac when troubleshooting high-refresh and VRR connections.
- Current PS5 system software and the latest Marvel’s Wolverine update.
- VRR enabled in the PS5 settings and, where required, enabled for the individual HDMI input in the display’s menus.
A cable by itself cannot create VRR or 120 Hz support. The console, cable, display hardware, selected HDMI input, system settings and game mode must all support the feature.
Setup procedure
- Install the latest PS5 system update and update Marvel’s Wolverine to version 1.002.000 or later when available.
- Connect the PS5 to the display’s VRR-capable HDMI input. If your display documentation specifies a particular 120 Hz or HDMI 2.1 input, use that port.
- On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and enable VRR. Set 120 Hz Output to automatic or enabled according to the labels shown on your console.
- Open the television or monitor’s own input settings and enable VRR, Game Mode or the manufacturer’s equivalent option for that HDMI port.
- Launch the game and select the available 120 Hz Display Mode and VRR options. If the game does not expose the option, verify the display signal and updates before assuming the feature is unavailable.
- Test a demanding combat or traversal sequence. A variable result is normal; do not expect a fixed rate above 60 fps in every scene.
Fixing common VRR and 120 Hz problems
The option is missing
Check the display’s specifications and HDMI input assignment first. Some televisions support 120 Hz or VRR only on selected inputs. Confirm that the console is connected directly to the display, that 120 Hz Output and VRR are enabled on PS5, and that the game and system software are current.
The picture flickers or drops out
Move the cable to the display’s designated high-refresh input, reseat both ends and try a certified HDMI 2.1 cable. Insomniac specifically recommends an HDMI 2.1 cable when troubleshooting. Also check for a display firmware update and verify that VRR is enabled in the display’s input-specific menu.

Motion still feels uneven
VRR reduces the visibility of frame-time changes; it does not turn a 30 fps mode into a 60 fps mode. Confirm which game mode is selected, then decide whether Performance or Performance Pro better matches your preference. If you selected Fidelity Pro, its 30 fps target remains the governing trade-off even with VRR.

How to choose the setting for your setup
Choose Performance Mode on a base PS5 when:
- You want the smoothest documented target and quicker-feeling control.
- You still want ray tracing included in the mode’s stated design.
- You play action sequences where camera and input responsiveness matter more than maximum image detail.
Choose the graphics-optimization option on a base PS5 when:
- You prefer a more detail-focused presentation and accept that the reviewed sources do not specify its exact resolution or frame-rate behavior.
- You mostly play at a slower pace or sit close enough to a large display to notice image-quality differences.
Choose Performance Pro when:
- You own a PS5 Pro and want a 60 fps target with standard Fidelity visuals reconstructed through PSSR.
- You value responsiveness but want Pro-specific image reconstruction.
Choose Fidelity Pro when:
- Advanced ray-tracing features are more important than a 60 fps target.
- You are comfortable with a 30 fps presentation and prioritize lighting and effects.
Enable VRR and 120 Hz when:
- Your display supports both features and you have configured the correct HDMI input.
- You prefer a variable, uncapped output and understand that the actual rate changes with gameplay.
What is not officially established
The available official pages and reviewed coverage do not provide a reliable, complete table of internal resolution ranges for every console and mode. They also do not list every graphics-menu toggle or publish a current independent benchmark covering all scenes after update 1.002.000.
Accordingly, avoid presenting a specific pixel count, a percentage improvement from QSSR or PSSR, or a claim that the game is locked at 30 or 60 fps in every scene. The defensible comparisons are the documented mode targets, ray-tracing descriptions, reconstruction features and display requirements explained above.
Keeping the game on the correct version
Because QSSR arrived in update 1.002.000, version checking is part of graphics troubleshooting. On the PS5 home screen, highlight Marvel’s Wolverine, press the Options button and choose Check for Update. To confirm the installed version, open the game’s information screen or the title’s update history and look for version 1.002.000 or a later revision. If QSSR is not visible as an option, remember that the patch says it is on by default rather than a separate frame-rate mode.
The update also contains fixes beyond image reconstruction, including stability, crashes, bugs, visual polish, accessibility and localization. Installing it can therefore change behavior unrelated to the Performance, Fidelity or VRR selection.
