Marvell Alternatives for Data Center Networking and Custom AI Chips

There is no single substitute for Marvell. The right alternative depends on the layer you are buying: merchant Ethernet or PCIe switching, optical-interconnect components, or a custom accelerator designed with a hyperscaler. Broadcom is the strongest documented comparison for custom AI silicon; NVIDIA is the most relevant integrated AI-networking platform, although it is also a Marvell partner through NVLink Fusion. Marvell remains differentiated by combining switch silicon, optical connectivity and co-designed custom chips.

What “Marvell alternatives” means in practice

Data-center buyers often use “Marvell alternative” as if it described one product category. It does not. Marvell sells components and co-designed systems at several points in an AI infrastructure stack, and each point has different competitors, protocols and buying criteria.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Merchant networking silicon: Ethernet and PCIe switch chips used by equipment manufacturers in scale-out, scale-across and scale-up systems.
  • Optical and electrical interconnect: Digital signal processors (DSPs), transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs), laser drivers, optical engines, silicon photonics, co-packaged optics (CPO), linear-drive optics (LPO), active electrical-cable (AEC) DSPs and PCIe retimers.
  • Custom AI silicon: ASICs and related intellectual property co-designed for one hyperscaler’s workload and infrastructure strategy.

A supplier can be a credible alternative in one layer and an unsuitable substitute in another. A high-bandwidth Ethernet switch is not automatically an alternative to a custom accelerator ASIC, and an integrated AI platform is not equivalent to a merchant optical DSP. Start with the layer, network tier and protocol you need, then compare vendors inside that boundary.

What Marvell offers before you compare alternatives

Switch silicon for scale-out, scale-across and scale-up

Marvell describes its data-center switch portfolio as Ethernet and PCIe silicon led by the Teralynx family. Its portfolio maps Teralynx products to scale-out and scale-across networks and identifies PCIe switches for scale-up designs. Marvell’s scale-out materials describe Teralynx coverage from 12.8T to 102.4T of switching capacity, along with telemetry and an optical-connectivity stack.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.

Those capacities are vendor portfolio claims, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee that every Teralynx device delivers the same feature set. A design team still has to check port configuration, buffer architecture, latency, software support, optics qualification and availability for the exact device.

Custom chips and foundational IP

Marvell says its custom products are co-designed for a single hyperscaler’s workload and infrastructure strategy. Its fiscal 2026 annual report lists custom ASIC IP covering high-speed SerDes, compute, security, storage, silicon photonics, die-to-die interconnect, chiplets, co-packaged optics and custom high-bandwidth memory.

That model is different from buying a catalog accelerator or switch. The customer and silicon supplier jointly define interfaces, memory, packaging, security and software requirements, then share the engineering and production roadmap. It can produce a highly optimized device, but it is not normally a retail product that another enterprise can order off the shelf.

Optical, electrical and protocol interconnect

Marvell’s interconnect portfolio includes PAM and coherent or coherent-lite DSPs, laser drivers, TIAs, silicon photonics, CPO and LPO chipsets, data-center interconnect, AEC DSPs and PCIe retimers. The company also describes a scale-out stack containing optical DSPs, TIAs, drivers, optical engines, AEC DSPs and telemetry.

For scale-up links, Marvell describes support across PCIe, UALink, ESUN and NVLink-compatible protocols, with Teralynx T100 serving as an Ethernet bridge. Marvell also notes that scale-up protocols are still developing and that several approaches exist. Protocol support should therefore be verified against the accelerator, CPU, NIC, switch and software versions in your intended deployment rather than treated as a permanent standard.

Marvell layer What it does What an alternative must match
Ethernet switching Teralynx switch silicon for scale-out and scale-across fabrics Port speeds, radix, buffers, telemetry, latency, NOS and optics interoperability
PCIe and scale-up switching PCIe switches and bridges for accelerator and host connectivity PCIe generation, lane topology, protocol behavior, firmware and platform validation
Optical interconnect DSPs, TIAs, drivers, optical engines, silicon photonics, CPO and LPO Reach, power, thermal design, module ecosystem, yield and qualification
Custom AI silicon Hyperscaler-specific ASIC design and IP SerDes, compute, memory, packaging, security, software and manufacturing execution

Broadcom: the clearest custom-AI-silicon alternative

For custom accelerator programs, Broadcom is the strongest directly supported comparison in the available evidence. In a July 16, 2026 assessment, Gartner stated: “Broadcom is the Company to Beat for Custom AI Silicon.” Gartner cited Broadcom’s ASIC design, networking, foundational IP, advanced packaging, SerDes, memory and die-to-die interconnect capabilities.

Those capabilities overlap substantially with the requirements of a hyperscaler custom-chip program. They indicate an ability to work across the die, package, memory and network rather than supplying only a compute block. They do not, by themselves, prove that a particular Broadcom design will outperform a Marvell design, cost less, or be available on a customer’s schedule. Custom silicon is negotiated program by program, and public information rarely discloses complete power, yield, software or production data.

Broadcom’s concrete switching evidence

Broadcom lists the BCM78900 as a “51.2 Tb/s StrataXGS® Tomahawk® 5 Ethernet Switch.” That is clear evidence of a data-center Ethernet-switch product. It is not a complete specification-by-specification match against Teralynx. Bandwidth alone does not establish equivalent radix, packet buffers, telemetry, latency, software stack, optics support or system-level performance.

When Broadcom is the better starting point

  • Your primary project is a hyperscaler-scale custom accelerator or XPU rather than a standard merchant switch.
  • You want one supplier conversation spanning ASIC design, SerDes, packaging, memory and die-to-die links.
  • Your architecture already uses Broadcom switching and you value common design tools, qualification processes or supply-chain relationships.

Those are selection hypotheses, not guarantees. Confirm engineering ownership, foundry and packaging capacity, software responsibilities, non-recurring engineering terms, production commitments and last-time-buy provisions in the contract.

NVIDIA: integrated AI infrastructure, not a simple one-for-one replacement

NVIDIA is relevant when the decision is about an integrated AI platform that combines accelerators, networking and software. Its silicon-photonics materials list Quantum-X InfiniBand Photonics switches and Spectrum-X Ethernet Photonics switches. NVIDIA describes Spectrum-X Ethernet Photonics as planned for availability in the second half of 2026; that is a forward-looking vendor statement, so confirm the date, regional availability and shipping configuration before committing a deployment.

NVIDIA also publishes performance claims about the benefits of co-packaged optics. Treat those figures as NVIDIA’s claims, not as independent comparative findings. A fair comparison requires the same workload, topology, optics, software, power limits and measurement method.

The Marvell–NVIDIA relationship

On March 31, 2026, Marvell and NVIDIA announced an NVLink Fusion partnership. The announcement says Marvell will provide custom XPUs and NVLink Fusion-compatible scale-up networking. NVIDIA will provide platform components including Vera CPU, ConnectX NICs, BlueField DPUs, NVLink and Spectrum-X switches.

This creates both cooperation and competitive overlap. NVIDIA is not a simple substitute for every Marvell component: the companies can work together in one scale-up design while competing for portions of the accelerator, networking or optical bill of materials. A procurement comparison should identify which component is being sourced and whether the proposed architecture requires NVIDIA’s complete platform or permits multi-vendor substitution.

When an NVIDIA-centered design makes sense

  • You want a tightly integrated accelerator, NIC, DPU, switch and software environment.
  • Your application depends on NVLink or a platform-specific scale-up topology.
  • You prefer an integrated system qualification path over assembling merchant components from several suppliers.

An integrated platform can reduce compatibility work, but it may constrain component choice and increase dependence on one vendor’s roadmap. Compare that trade-off with the flexibility of a multi-vendor Ethernet design.

Compare vendors by the layer and network tier

The most useful comparison is not “which company has the fastest chip?” It is a set of narrower decisions about where traffic flows and which device owns each function.

Decision axis Questions to answer Why it changes the result
Custom accelerator design Is the chip a single-customer ASIC, a reusable merchant device or a complete platform? Custom programs prioritize co-design, IP ownership, packaging and supply commitments; merchant products prioritize standardization and availability.
Fabric type Will the cluster use Ethernet, InfiniBand or a combination? Protocol, congestion control, software and adapter choices differ; a switch from one fabric is not automatically interchangeable with another.
Network tier Is the requirement scale-out, scale-across or scale-up? Scale-out connects servers and racks; scale-up connects accelerators and hosts inside a system. Their latency, topology and protocol requirements are different.
Optical integration Do you need pluggable optics, AECs, CPO, LPO or an optical engine? Reach, power, thermal design, module qualification and serviceability can outweigh headline switch bandwidth.
Interoperability Which PCIe, UALink, ESUN, NVLink-compatible, Ethernet or InfiniBand interfaces must interoperate? A nominally supported protocol may still require specific firmware, retimers, adapters and software versions.
Integration model Do you want merchant components in a multi-vendor system or an integrated AI platform? Multi-vendor designs offer choice; integrated platforms can shorten validation but may limit substitution.
Evidence quality Is the number a vendor specification, a vendor performance claim or an independent test? These are not equivalent forms of evidence and should not be presented as a common benchmark.

No source establishes a universal performance winner among Marvell, Broadcom and NVIDIA. There is also no complete public price matrix or apples-to-apples deployment benchmark covering their products. A defensible decision must therefore use the exact device, topology and commercial proposal under consideration.

Scale-out, scale-across and scale-up: choose the right comparison first

Scale-out

Scale-out connects servers or accelerator nodes across a data-center fabric. Ethernet switch silicon, NICs, congestion management, telemetry and optical modules are central. Marvell’s Teralynx scale-out range and its optical DSP, TIA, driver, optical-engine and AEC portfolio belong in this comparison. Broadcom’s Tomahawk family is a concrete Ethernet-switch alternative, while NVIDIA’s Spectrum-X and InfiniBand products represent more integrated fabric options.

Scale-across

Scale-across links racks or domains while preserving predictable bandwidth and operational visibility. The practical comparison includes switch radix, oversubscription, buffer behavior, telemetry, optics reach, cabling and network operating system support. Do not select on aggregate terabits per second alone; the same headline capacity can produce different usable bandwidth and failure behavior depending on port configuration and topology.

Scale-up

Scale-up connects accelerators, CPUs and memory inside a server or tightly coupled system. PCIe, UALink, ESUN and NVLink-compatible approaches have different maturity, software and interoperability conditions. Marvell describes Teralynx T100 as an Ethernet bridge in this context and notes that scale-up protocols are still developing. NVIDIA’s NVLink ecosystem is relevant where a system is designed around NVIDIA’s platform, while Marvell’s NVLink Fusion announcement shows that the boundary between partner and competitor can be architectural rather than absolute.

A practical vendor-selection workflow

  1. Write the bill of functions. Separate accelerator compute, host connectivity, scale-up links, scale-out switches, optical modules, AECs, retimers, telemetry and software. Do not issue one undifferentiated request for a “Marvell replacement.”
  2. Classify every link. Mark each connection as scale-up, scale-out or scale-across, then record Ethernet, InfiniBand, PCIe, UALink, ESUN or NVLink-compatible requirements.
  3. Set hard interface constraints. Specify port count, lane width, signaling rate, reach, latency target, power envelope, thermal limits, connector or module type and required management interfaces.
  4. Decide the integration model. State whether a multi-vendor design is acceptable or whether the project requires an integrated accelerator-and-network platform.
  5. Shortlist by evidence. Use Broadcom first for a custom-AI-ASIC discussion, NVIDIA for an integrated AI-infrastructure discussion, and Marvell when the requirement spans Teralynx switching, optical connectivity and co-designed silicon. Then require each vendor to map a specific product or program to every function.
  6. Request interoperability proof. Ask for validated combinations of switch, NIC, DPU, accelerator, optics, retimers, firmware and network software. Require test conditions and topology, not just a marketing throughput number.
  7. Evaluate production risk. Review foundry, advanced-packaging and HBM capacity, optical-module supply, qualification status, lead times, change-notification policy, support life and contingency sources.
  8. Separate engineering and commercial gates. Approve technical fit first, then compare non-recurring engineering, unit pricing, minimum order quantities, support, warranty, licensing and production commitments. Public sources do not provide a reliable price comparison for these programs.

Architecture patterns and their trade-offs

Multi-vendor Ethernet fabric

A multi-vendor Ethernet design can combine merchant switch silicon, independently sourced NICs and optical components. Its advantages are component choice and the possibility of replacing one supplier without redesigning the entire platform. Its costs are greater interoperability testing, more complex support boundaries and the need to coordinate firmware, optics and congestion-control behavior.

Integrated accelerator platform

An NVIDIA-centered platform can combine accelerators, ConnectX NICs, BlueField DPUs, NVLink and Spectrum-X or InfiniBand switching. This can simplify qualification for a defined software and hardware stack. The trade-off is less freedom to substitute individual components and greater exposure to the platform roadmap. Spectrum-X Ethernet Photonics timing should be reconfirmed because the stated second-half-2026 availability is forward-looking.

Custom XPU with independent networking

A hyperscaler may use a custom XPU from one silicon partner and merchant Ethernet or optical components from another. This can optimize the accelerator for a workload while preserving networking flexibility. It also shifts more integration responsibility to the system designer: die-to-die links, memory, SerDes, retimers, optics, firmware and telemetry must be validated as one system.

What Marvell’s fiscal 2026 figures do—and do not—tell you

Marvell reported in its May 2026 proxy statement that approximately three-quarters of total revenue came from data center in fiscal 2026. It said optical interconnect represented roughly half of data-center revenue and custom silicon approximately one-quarter. The company also reported approximately 50% compound annual growth in optical interconnect for five consecutive years.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are Marvell-reported business figures, not independent market-share estimates. They show why optical connectivity and custom silicon are central to Marvell’s strategy, but they do not prove that Marvell leads every switch, optics or ASIC segment, nor do they predict a particular project’s price or delivery schedule.

Questions to put in every request for proposal

  • Which exact device, stepping, package and firmware version is proposed?
  • What aggregate and per-port bandwidth is guaranteed under the requested topology?
  • Which measurements are specifications, which are vendor tests and which are independent results?
  • Which optics, AECs, retimers, NICs, DPUs and accelerators have been validated together?
  • What Ethernet, InfiniBand, PCIe, UALink, ESUN or NVLink-compatible functions are implemented, and at what software versions?
  • For a custom ASIC, who owns the architecture, RTL, verification, physical design, packaging, firmware and production test?
  • What are the non-recurring engineering charges, unit-price assumptions, minimum volumes and production milestones?
  • What happens if an optical module, HBM stack, package or foundry node is delayed?
  • How are security updates, telemetry features and protocol changes delivered after deployment?
  • What is the end-of-life, last-time-buy and change-notification policy?

Bottom line for each buying scenario

Your primary need Most relevant comparison Important qualification
Hyperscaler-specific custom AI accelerator Broadcom versus Marvell custom-silicon programs Gartner’s July 16, 2026 assessment names Broadcom the company to beat for custom AI silicon; program-level engineering and supply terms still decide suitability.
Merchant Ethernet switching Marvell Teralynx versus Broadcom Tomahawk-class products Broadcom’s BCM78900 is listed at 51.2 Tb/s, but no complete apples-to-apples specification comparison is established.
Integrated AI fabric NVIDIA’s accelerator, NIC, DPU and switch ecosystem NVIDIA is also a Marvell partner through NVLink Fusion, so it is not a universal substitute for Marvell components.
Optical connectivity and photonics Marvell’s DSP, photonics, CPO, LPO and optical-engine breadth versus the chosen supplier’s module and system roadmap Gartner’s July 16, 2026 assessment names Marvell the company to beat in AI data-center optical connectivity; verify product availability and independent results.

The most accurate answer to “Who supplies scale-out networking silicon for AI data centers?” is therefore conditional: Marvell and Broadcom are merchant-silicon comparisons for Ethernet infrastructure, NVIDIA is a broader integrated platform option, and the best choice depends on protocol, network tier, optical architecture and how much of the system the buyer wants one supplier to own.
