Marvel Zombies Comics Reading Order: A Beginner’s Guide

Start with Ultimate Fantastic Four #21–23, then read Marvel Zombies: Dead Days #1, Marvel Zombies (2005) #1–5, the connected Ultimate Fantastic Four and Black Panther issues, Marvel Zombies 2 #1–5, and finally Marvel Zombies Return #1–5. That is the clearest route through the original Zombie Universe story. You do not need to read every series carrying the Marvel Zombies name: many later books are anthologies, crossovers, all-ages stories, or separate realities.

The one ordering decision is where to put Dead Days. It is a prequel, so the sequence above follows story chronology. If you prefer publication order, read the original five-issue Marvel Zombies series before Dead Days. Both approaches work; choose one and then continue through the same core issues.

The beginner reading order at a glance

The table below separates the original continuity from optional material. Issue ranges are given exactly so you can use single issues, digital issues, or collections without guessing what belongs in the route.

Step Issues or series Continuity role Why read it here
1 Ultimate Fantastic Four #21–23 First appearance of the Zombie Universe Introduces the reality before the self-titled miniseries.
2 Marvel Zombies: Dead Days #1 Prequel Story chronology places it before the original miniseries; publication-order readers can move it after step 3.
3 Marvel Zombies (2005) #1–5 Original limited series The central starting point and the simplest definition of the original saga.
4 Ultimate Fantastic Four #30–32; Black Panther (2005) #27–30 Follow-up appearances and crossover material Extends the original-universe storyline beyond the first miniseries.
5 Marvel Zombies 2 #1–5 Core continuation Returns to the original Zombieverse narrative.
6 Marvel Zombies Return #1–5 Core conclusion Completes the main continuation identified by the recommended guide.

Steps 1 through 6 are the compact route for a first read. The crossover issues in step 4 are worthwhile if you want the surrounding material, but they are not a reason to delay starting the first miniseries.

Why Ultimate Fantastic Four comes first

The Zombie Universe did not debut in the first book titled Marvel Zombies. Its first appearance is in Ultimate Fantastic Four #21–23, where Ultimate Reed Richards discovers the Zombieverse. That makes the three-issue arc the best orientation for readers who want to see how the setting is introduced rather than entering after the premise has already been established.

Those issues are part of the Ultimate line, not a missing chapter from the numbered Marvel Zombies miniseries. Treat them as an opening arc that establishes the reality and its relationship to the characters you will meet in the self-titled series. Once you finish #23, continue to Dead Days if you are reading in-story chronology.

Chronological order versus publication order

Story chronology

Chronological reading puts Dead Days #1 before Marvel Zombies (2005) #1–5 because it is explicitly a prequel. This gives you the events leading into the original miniseries before you read the miniseries itself. For a first-time reader who values a smooth timeline, use:

  1. Ultimate Fantastic Four #21–23
  2. Marvel Zombies: Dead Days #1
  3. Marvel Zombies (2005) #1–5
  4. Ultimate Fantastic Four #30–32 and Black Panther (2005) #27–30
  5. Marvel Zombies 2 #1–5
  6. Marvel Zombies Return #1–5

Publication order

Publication order places the original Marvel Zombies miniseries before Dead Days. That preserves the way many readers first encountered the setting: discover the concept in the original series, then read the prequel for additional context. After that swap, the rest of the route remains unchanged:

  1. Ultimate Fantastic Four #21–23
  2. Marvel Zombies (2005) #1–5
  3. Marvel Zombies: Dead Days #1
  4. Ultimate Fantastic Four #30–32 and Black Panther (2005) #27–30
  5. Marvel Zombies 2 #1–5
  6. Marvel Zombies Return #1–5

Neither order is a continuity error. The difference is whether you want the prequel’s information before or after the original miniseries. Do not place Dead Days between individual issues of Marvel Zombies; the available guidance treats it as a separate prequel to the five-issue series.

Reading the original saga step by step

1. Ultimate Fantastic Four #21–23

Read all three issues together. This is the Zombie Universe’s first appearance and the point at which the alternate reality is discovered. Starting here gives you the premise in its original context and explains why the later miniseries can assume that a parallel Marvel world exists.

If you are using a collection, check the contents page rather than assuming every Ultimate Fantastic Four issue is included. The relevant opening arc is specifically #21–23.

2. Marvel Zombies: Dead Days #1

Dead Days is a one-issue prequel to the first Marvel Zombies miniseries. In chronological order it is your next read; in publication order it follows Marvel Zombies #1–5. Its status matters because it is easy to mistake the title for a later side story. It is connected directly to the original premise, but it is not the first publication in the franchise.

When buying individual issues, look for the complete title and the issue designation “#1.” Do not substitute a similarly named later collection unless its contents list identifies Dead Days.

3. Marvel Zombies (2005) #1–5

This is the original self-titled limited series and the most common answer to “where should I start?” for readers who want the main story quickly. After the introductory Ultimate Fantastic Four arc, read all five issues in sequence. The year in parentheses distinguishes this series from later books with nearly identical titles.

Reading only these five issues gives you the central premise, but it does not include every connected appearance. Continue to the next step if you want the original-universe material that follows the miniseries rather than stopping at its first ending.

4. Ultimate Fantastic Four #30–32

These three issues are follow-up material in the same broad original-universe reading path. They are not a replacement for Ultimate Fantastic Four #21–23: the earlier arc is the first appearance, while #30–32 belongs after the original Marvel Zombies miniseries in the recommended sequence.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Keep the two Ultimate Fantastic Four ranges separate in your checklist. A collection that includes #30–32 may not include #21–23, and vice versa.

5. Black Panther (2005) #27–30

The recommended reading guide places Black Panther (2005) #27–30 alongside the follow-up material. Read the four issues after the original Marvel Zombies miniseries and before Marvel Zombies 2.

There is a practical collection wrinkle: the contents description for The Marvel Zomnibus lists Black Panther #28–30, while the reading-order recommendation lists #27–30. If you are assembling the route from a collection, verify which issues your edition actually contains and obtain #27 separately if you want to follow the full #27–30 sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Marvel Zombies 2 #1–5

Read the five issues consecutively after the Ultimate Fantastic Four and Black Panther follow-ups. This is the principal continuation of the original Zombieverse storyline, not an anthology or an unrelated reboot. Its placement is straightforward once the earlier crossover material is complete.

7. Marvel Zombies Return #1–5

Finish the core route with all five issues of Marvel Zombies Return. The recommended guide treats this series as the conclusion of the original storyline. At this point you have completed the beginner path; the remaining titles are expansions or separate branches rather than prerequisites.

What to read after the core route

After Marvel Zombies Return, choose based on the kind of reading experience you want. The later books do not form one universally agreed, single timeline. Some revisit the original concept, some cross it with another property, and some take place in other realities.

Expansion stories connected with the broader franchise

  • Marvel Zombies 3, Marvel Zombies 4, and Marvel Zombies 5: later numbered expansions that the reading guide recommends saving until after the original saga.
  • Marvel Zombies/Army of Darkness: a crossover. Read it as an optional branch rather than inserting it into the six-step beginner sequence.
  • Marvel Zombies: Evil Evolution: an additional connected story for readers who want more material after the core.
  • Marvel Zombies Supreme: another optional expansion, not a required bridge between Marvel Zombies 2 and Marvel Zombies Return.
  • Marvel Zombies Destroy!: a later branch that can be approached after you know the original continuity.

The exact placement of these expansion books is not presented as one uncontested chronology. The useful rule is to complete the original six-step route first, then sample the optional titles in any order that suits your interest unless a particular collection supplies its own sequence.

Later branches that are not prerequisites

Marvel’s catalog contains many distinct series with the Marvel Zombies label. A shared title does not prove that a book continues the original Zombieverse. These branches are best treated as independent entry points or experiments with the premise.

Marvel Zombies: Resurrection

Marvel Zombies: Resurrection is a separate later entry point. The official series listing describes a four-issue 2020 series in which a Galactus corpse brings a cannibalistic virus to Earth. The collected edition also includes the 2019 one-shot Marvel Zombies: Resurrection #1 and the 2020 series #1–4.

If you want to read this branch, use the collection’s contents as your checklist: 2019 #1 first, followed by 2020 #1–4. You do not need the original Ultimate Fantastic Four or Marvel Zombies sequence to understand that it is a distinct later story, and it is not required to finish the 2005-era saga.

Marvel Zombies: Black, White & Blood

Black, White & Blood is described as an anthology without explicit links to the earlier timelines. Read it when you want standalone stories rather than another chapter in the original continuity. Because an anthology is not a linear continuation, there is no reason to place individual issues between the core series.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Marvel Zombies: Dawn of Decay

Dawn of Decay is a stand-alone all-ages story. It is suitable for readers who want a self-contained, younger-skewing branch and does not require the original saga as preparation. Read it independently, not as step 7 after Marvel Zombies Return.

Other cataloged titles

Marvel’s indexed catalog also lists Marvel Zombies: Red Band and Marvel Zombies: War Zone, among other later series. Their presence in the catalog confirms that they are separate published titles, not that they belong in the original reading order. Check each book’s own contents and premise before assigning it a place in your checklist.

Collections and individual issues

The Marvel Zomnibus

The Marvel Zomnibus is a convenient physical route for much of the original-universe material. Its listed contents include Dead Days, Ultimate Fantastic Four #21–23 and #30–32, Black Panther #28–30, Marvel Zombies #1–5, and Marvel Zombies 2 #1–5, plus additional connected stories.

It is broader than the shortest beginner path and may not match the issue-by-issue order you want to follow. Use the contents page to identify the relevant arcs, and remember the #27 versus #28 discrepancy for Black Panther. Current retail availability was not established, so confirm the live listing and edition contents before purchasing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Marvel Zomnibus Returns

Marvel Zomnibus Returns gathers later material, including titles from the Resurrection branch. It is a useful expansion purchase after you have decided whether you want separate later realities, but it is not needed to complete the original Marvel Zombies → Marvel Zombies 2 → Marvel Zombies Return route.

Marvel Zombies: Resurrection Trade Paperback

The official trade paperback listing says this volume collects Marvel Zombies: Resurrection (2019) #1 and Marvel Zombies: Resurrection (2020) #1–4. Choose it when you specifically want the later Resurrection storyline in one volume. Verify the edition and current stock before ordering.

When single issues are better

Individual issues are useful when a collection omits one crossover chapter or when you want to preserve publication order. They also let you buy only the compact route: the three-issue opening arc, the prequel, the five-issue original miniseries, and the two five-issue continuations. The trade-off is that back-issue availability and numbering can vary, especially for crossover issues.

Three practical ways to choose your route

You want the shortest complete introduction

Read Ultimate Fantastic Four #21–23, then Marvel Zombies (2005) #1–5. Add Marvel Zombies 2 #1–5 and Marvel Zombies Return #1–5 if you want the original storyline’s continuation and conclusion. Insert Dead Days before the miniseries only if you prefer chronology.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want every original-universe tie-in identified by the guide

Use the full six-step sequence: opening Ultimate Fantastic Four, Dead Days, the original miniseries, Ultimate Fantastic Four #30–32, Black Panther #27–30, Marvel Zombies 2, and Marvel Zombies Return. Audit your collection contents so you do not silently skip Black Panther #27.

You only want a modern standalone story

Start with Marvel Zombies: Resurrection and read the 2019 one-shot followed by the 2020 #1–4 issues, or choose Dawn of Decay for its all-ages, stand-alone format. These choices avoid the longer original sequence, but they are separate branches rather than substitutes for understanding the first Zombieverse appearance.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Starting with the first self-titled issue and assuming it is the debut: the Zombie Universe first appears in Ultimate Fantastic Four #21–23.
  • Calling Dead Days a sequel: it is a prequel, although publication-order readers may encounter it after the original miniseries.
  • Putting every Marvel Zombies title in one timeline: anthologies, crossovers, all-ages stories, and later realities do not automatically continue the original saga.
  • Stopping after Marvel Zombies #1–5 when you want the conclusion: continue through Marvel Zombies 2 and Marvel Zombies Return.
  • Trusting a collection title without checking its contents: issue ranges differ between editions, and the listed omnibus contents include Black Panther #28–30 while the recommended reading path includes #27–30.
  • Buying before confirming the edition: availability and current stock for the omnibus and trade paperback can change, so verify the live listing and contents.

A final checklist

  1. Mark whether you are using chronological or publication order.
  2. Obtain Ultimate Fantastic Four #21–23.
  3. Read Dead Days #1 before or after the original miniseries according to your chosen order.
  4. Read Marvel Zombies (2005) #1–5.
  5. Add Ultimate Fantastic Four #30–32 and Black Panther (2005) #27–30 for the connected follow-up material.
  6. Finish the original route with Marvel Zombies 2 #1–5 and Marvel Zombies Return #1–5.
  7. Only then choose optional expansions or a separate branch such as Resurrection, Black, White & Blood, or Dawn of Decay.
