Choose MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls if you want a current Marvel fighter built around four-character teams, an original story episode, cross-play and modern online modes. Choose MARVEL vs. CAPCOM Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics if you want the original arcade-era crossover experience in a seven-game historical bundle. They are not two editions of the same game: Tōkon is one new team fighter, while the Capcom product is a collection of several older games with different rules.
The short answer
| If you care most about… | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A new Marvel game | MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls | A current release with a 20-character launch roster, four-character teams and an original Episode mode. |
| Arcade history and variety | MARVEL vs. CAPCOM Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics | Seven preserved arcade titles spanning X-Men, Marvel Super Heroes and Marvel-versus-Street Fighter matchups, plus The Punisher. |
| One consistent team system | MARVEL Tōkon | Every match uses the same four-versus-four concept: each player brings four characters. |
| Several distinct classic systems | Fighting Collection | Each included game keeps its own mechanics, pacing and roster structure rather than sharing one ruleset. |
| A story campaign | MARVEL Tōkon | PlayStation confirms an original Episode mode. |
| Classic arcade modes | Fighting Collection | Capcom lists arcade, versus and training options, with online features that vary by title. |
The practical recommendation is therefore preference-based, not a claim that one product replaces the other. Tōkon is the straightforward choice for someone shopping for a contemporary Marvel fighter. The collection is the better fit for someone who specifically wants to revisit the arcade lineage or own several historically important games in one package.

What you are actually comparing
MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is one contemporary game
MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a new Marvel team fighting game from Arc System Works. PlayStation lists 20 characters at launch and describes matches in which two players each control a four-character team. That format is the central design decision: you select a squad, but the game is intended to let you concentrate on learning one character at a time rather than requiring complete mastery of all four immediately.

PlayStation’s official information gives August 6, 2026 in UTC as the release date, with local calendar differences by region. It is available on PlayStation 5 and PC; PC editions are listed for Steam and Epic. The PS5 and PC versions support cross-play. Because store availability and release timing can differ by territory, check the edition shown for your account before buying.

The Fighting Collection is seven separate arcade-era games
MARVEL vs. CAPCOM Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics is a compilation rather than a new sequel. The Capcom US listing reviewed for this comparison is a Steam product, while platform and purchase format can differ by region. The bundle combines several crossover fighters, one Marvel-versus-Marvel game and a beat ’em up. There is no single universal combat system across the package, so comparing “the collection’s” speed, team size or special-move rules without naming a particular game can be misleading.
This distinction matters when you are deciding what to learn. Tōkon gives you one current ruleset and one online population to follow. The collection gives you breadth and historical context, but moving from one included title to another can mean relearning assists, gauges, character movement and match objectives.
How the team formats differ
Tōkon’s four-character structure
In Tōkon, both players bring four characters. The team format creates decisions about order, tags and how you distribute risk, but PlayStation and game director Kazuto Sekine present the design as approachable even if you begin with one preferred character. Sekine said the team-versus concept was designed so that “you only need to master one character in order to play the game.” That is the developer’s description of the intended learning curve, not an independent difficulty measurement.

The roster count is a specification: PlayStation lists 20 launch characters. It does not, by itself, tell you which team compositions will be strongest after balance updates, nor does it establish a competitive tier list. Treat the launch number as the amount of character variety available when starting, not as a prediction of long-term competitive rankings.

- Assemble your team of legendary Marvel characters in the ultimate 4v4 tag team fighter from PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works and Marvel Games.
- Experiment with team compositions to discover new combos, synergies, and strategies. Blast your way through dynamic stages based on iconic Marvel Universe locales, some featuring interactive stage transitions.
- Fighting is both immersive and intuitive, with a range of unique move sets, combos, and strategies to master. Adjustable controls, both traditional and quick inputs, plus easy chain combos make diving right in a breeze.
- Face off against a friend locally or join the fray with up to 64 players in the online lobby, including standard VS modes. Plus, dive deep on each team with the single player Episode Mode to learn more about team dynamics and lore.
Different team rules across the collection
The collection does not give every title the same team size or tag procedure. X-Men: Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes are earlier crossover fighters; X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes and Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes each have their own character selection and assist conventions. The Punisher is a side-scrolling beat ’em up rather than a versus fighter. Select a specific title when you want to compare mechanics, because “Marvel vs. Capcom” can refer to several different games.
Story, arcade play and offline use
Tōkon’s original Episode mode
PlayStation confirms an original Episode mode in Tōkon. That gives the new game a narrative option in addition to fighting-focused modes. The same official information lists offline modes, so you can play without an online connection when using the supported local or solo content. Offline access does not remove the separate requirements for online features.
The collection’s preserved modes
Capcom’s listing and official manual describe arcade, versus and training modes, along with save/load features. Those options let you practice or play locally without treating the package as a new, connected story campaign. The reviewed materials do not establish a newly written, unified narrative that links all seven games. Some individual arcade titles have their own original endings or presentation, but that is different from a new collection-wide story mode.

- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Online, local and platform requirements
What Tōkon requires
- Platforms: PlayStation 5 and PC, with PC listings for Steam and Epic.
- Cross-play: PlayStation lists cross-play between PS5 and PC.
- Online modes: Official materials list online lobbies, private rooms, ranked matches and casual matches.
- Accounts and connection: Online play requires an internet connection and the relevant account. On PC, the listing says online play requires a PlayStation account and internet access.
- PS5 subscription: PlayStation says PS5 online play additionally requires PlayStation Plus. This requirement applies to online play, not to the offline modes.
- Local play: Local Versus is listed, allowing same-system matches without relying on matchmaking.
A compatible arcade stick or leverless controller can be used with the PS5 version, according to PlayStation. It is an optional accessory; a controller is not presented as a prerequisite.
What the collection offers online
Capcom describes ranked and casual matches, lobbies and rollback netcode for online play across the collection, along with co-op features where supported. Because the package contains different games, the exact mode set and behavior can depend on the selected title and platform edition. Check the store page for your country and system for current online requirements rather than assuming every feature is identical on every version.
Neither product’s online population, review count or future matchmaking health is established by the official specifications used here. Those conditions can change after launch, so they should not be inferred from the roster or game count.

Tōkon’s learning aids
PlayStation highlights adjustable controls, a choice between traditional and quick inputs, easy chain combos, training, character guides and offline modes. Quick inputs can reduce the execution barrier for a first session, while traditional inputs remain available for players who prefer conventional fighting-game commands. Character guides and training give you a way to study one member of a four-person team before adding more specialists.

- Innovative Boxing Gameplay: Boxing isn’t just about throwing punches. The ring is a strategic battlefield where fighters can choose an angle of attack, set up traps, and outsmart opponents through clever tactics.
- Multiple Modes: Play the epic journey from amateur boxing tournaments, all the way through to becoming Undisputed Champion in the true-to-life Career Mode, or jump online and battle it out with other fight fans using over 60 individual punches and revolutionary footwork mechanics to your advantage. There's always something new to experience in Undisputed.
- The World of Boxing: We’ve licensed and collaborated with over 70 real-life boxers, all of the major governing bodies, and a ton of boxing brands to bring unprecedented authenticity to Undisputed.
- Immersive Sights & Sounds: We've taken great care to make sure Undisputed looks and feels like boxing should, from incredibly detailed boxer models, utilizing the latest scanning technology to fighter customisation that includes gloves and shorts, taunts and ringwalk music.
These are design features and the developer’s stated accessibility goals, not proof that every player will find Tōkon easier. A four-character team still introduces additional decisions about order, switching and resource use. The sensible starting plan is to learn one main character, add a second only after you understand the basic team flow, and use training before entering ranked matches.
The collection’s beginner options
Capcom lists adjustable difficulty, one-button specials, training modes and save/load features. One-button specials can make older arcade games more approachable, while adjustable difficulty lets you reduce the pressure of the original CPU behavior. Save/load support is useful when you want to preserve progress or settings between sessions.
The underlying games were designed in different eras. Even with modern assists, they retain their original movement, timing and balance. A player comfortable with one title should not assume that its jump arcs, chain rules or assist timing transfer directly to another. Start with training, then use arcade or versus mode in the specific game you want to learn.
What is included in the seven-game collection?
| Included game | Type | What it contributes |
|---|---|---|
| X-Men: Children of the Atom | Arcade fighting game | An early Marvel crossover fighter centered on X-Men characters. |
| Marvel Super Heroes | Arcade fighting game | A Marvel-versus-Marvel roster and its own fighting-system rules. |
| X-Men vs. Street Fighter | Tag-team fighting game | The first of the collection’s explicit X-Men/Street Fighter crossovers. |
| Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter | Tag-team fighting game | Marvel and Street Fighter characters under a distinct set of mechanics. |
| Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes | Team fighting game | The first game in the named Marvel vs. Capcom series represented here. |
| Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes | Team fighting game | A later entry with its own roster, assists and team rules. |
| The Punisher | Side-scrolling beat ’em up | A cooperative-style arcade action experience rather than a versus fighter. |
The table is not a ranking. It explains why the collection appeals to a player who wants several eras and formats in one purchase. If your goal is specifically the Marvel vs. Capcom 2 ruleset, open that title directly; owning the bundle does not turn the other six games into the same experience.

Choose by the kind of player you are
Choose Tōkon if you want a current starting point
- You want a game designed for PS5 and current PC storefronts rather than a historical compilation.
- You prefer one consistent four-character team format.
- An original Episode mode matters to you.
- You want PS5-to-PC cross-play and modern ranked, casual, lobby and private-room options.
- You like the option of quick inputs, chain combos and character guides while learning.
- You want offline modes but may later move into online play.
Choose the Fighting Collection if you want arcade history
- You want seven games, not one new ruleset.
- You are interested in seeing how Marvel, X-Men and Street Fighter crossovers evolved across releases.
- You value arcade, versus and training modes, adjustable difficulty and one-button specials.
- You want to compare several distinct fighters and also have The Punisher available as a beat ’em up.
- You are comfortable checking each title’s controls instead of expecting one universal tutorial or team system.
Consider both if your priorities are different
The products serve complementary purposes. Tōkon can be your modern online game, while the collection can provide local sessions and a historical catalogue. Buying both only makes sense if you genuinely want those separate experiences; the collection is not an expansion for Tōkon, and Tōkon is not a remaster of any one Capcom entry.
A practical first-session plan
Starting with Tōkon
- Install the PS5 or PC edition and confirm that your platform and region match the store listing.
- Begin in training and select one character whose normal attacks and movement feel comfortable.
- Use the character guide and try both quick and traditional input settings so you know which control style suits you.
- Build a four-character team only after you understand your first character’s basic attacks, defense and assist role.
- Play local Versus or offline content before entering ranked matches.
- For online play, sign in to the required account, verify your internet connection and, on PS5, confirm that PlayStation Plus is active.
- Use a private room or casual match to test team order and connection behavior before committing to ranked play.
Starting with the collection
- Choose one title rather than opening the bundle at random. Marvel vs. Capcom 2, for example, has different team and assist expectations from Marvel Super Heroes.
- Enter training mode and review that game’s command list, assist behavior and available team structure.
- Turn on one-button specials or lower the difficulty if execution or CPU pressure is blocking progress.
- Use save/load features when you want to preserve a practice setup or progress.
- Move to arcade or local versus after you can perform your basic special and understand how the selected game handles tags or assists.
- For online play, check the platform-specific listing and select the game’s ranked, casual or lobby option where available.
Common buying mistakes to avoid
- Assuming “Marvel vs. Capcom” names one product: It can mean an individual game such as Clash of Super Heroes or Marvel vs. Capcom 2, or the seven-game Fighting Collection. Confirm the exact product title.
- Expecting the collection to have one campaign: The documented modes are arcade, versus and training, not a newly established linked story for all seven games.
- Confusing offline access with online requirements: Tōkon’s offline modes do not require the PS5 online subscription; ranked, casual, lobby and private-room play does require the relevant connection and account conditions.
- Assuming every collection game plays alike: The included fighters come from different releases, and The Punisher is a beat ’em up rather than a versus fighter.
- Treating launch counts as performance evidence: Tōkon’s 20-character roster and the collection’s seven games are product specifications, not sales, popularity or competitive-strength statistics.
- Buying an arcade stick unnecessarily: PlayStation confirms PS5 compatibility for arcade sticks and leverless controllers, but they are optional. Use the controller you already own before adding hardware.
- Assuming store details are universal: The reviewed Capcom listing is a US Steam listing, and platform, edition, price and availability can vary by country.
Verdict
For most people looking for a new Marvel fighting game, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is the right choice. It gives you one current four-character team system, 20 launch characters, an original Episode mode, offline play and PS5/PC cross-play, with controls and training features aimed at reducing the initial barrier.
MARVEL vs. CAPCOM Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics is the better choice for preservation and variety. Its value comes from seven distinct arcade-era games, including the named Marvel-versus-Capcom entries and The Punisher, plus adjustable difficulty, one-button specials, training and online features described by Capcom. Pick it when the historical arcade experience matters more than having one unified modern ruleset.
In other words: choose Tōkon for a contemporary Marvel fighter to learn and play online; choose the Fighting Collection for a broad archive of classic crossover games. Calling the collection simply “Marvel vs. Capcom” without that qualification is the easiest way to buy the wrong experience.
