Choose Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls if you want Marvel characters, a newer four-character team design, PS5/PC cross-play, and a broad set of documented offline modes. Choose Dragon Ball FighterZ if Dragon Ball is the deciding factor and you prefer a familiar 3v3 tag-and-support format with ranked matches, an interactive lobby, and six-player Party Match.
Neither game can be declared the universal winner from the available evidence. There is no verified comparative balance study, live-population comparison, connection test, or hands-on evaluation here. The practical choice is therefore about team structure, franchise attachment, platform access, solo content, and whether you want a new 2026 release or an established Dragon Ball fighter.

Quick answer: which game fits you?
These games share the tag-fighter idea but ask you to build teams in different ways. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls launched on August 6, 2026 for PS5 and PC; Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Korea received the local date August 7. It has 20 launch characters, PS5/PC cross-play, and a four-character team for each player. Dragon Ball FighterZ uses the conventional three-character 3v3 tag/support format and centers its appeal on the Dragon Ball universe.

How the team systems actually differ
Marvel Tōkon uses four characters, but not all four are active from the opening exchange
In Marvel Tōkon, each player has a four-character team. The important qualification is timing: the third and fourth characters become available during the match after a successful stage transition or wall-bounce, or after the player loses a round. That makes “four characters” different from simply selecting four fighters and tagging among all of them immediately.

For a new player, the structure changes how a match is learned. You can begin with a primary character, then add the later teammates as the match exposes them. A stage transition or wall-bounce is not just visual spectacle; it is one of the documented conditions that opens access to the rest of the team. Losing a round is another route, so a player who has not reached the later-character triggers may still bring those fighters into the next stage of the contest.
The system also gives team selection a different planning problem from a standard 3v3 game. You are choosing four characters, but your early-game plan cannot assume that every assist or tag option is available immediately. Consider which character you can play confidently before the additional members appear, and how your choices function once the complete team is accessible.
Dragon Ball FighterZ is a conventional 3v3 tag/support fighter
Dragon Ball FighterZ is described by its publisher as “3vs3 Tag/Support.” You select three characters and use tags and assists to create high-speed combinations. The format is immediately recognizable to players who have experience with traditional team fighters: the full trio is part of the match structure from the outset, and your decisions revolve around order, assists, health management, and when to bring in a teammate.
That familiarity can be an advantage if you want established tag-fighter conventions rather than learning a newer four-character access system. It does not prove that Dragon Ball FighterZ is easier or better balanced; it simply means the team rules are more conventional and are presented that way by the publisher.
What the four-versus-three difference means in practice
- Opening game: Marvel Tōkon asks you to work with the character currently available while the match progresses toward the additional fighters. Dragon Ball FighterZ starts with a complete three-character team.
- Team breadth: Marvel Tōkon gives you four selections per player, while Dragon Ball FighterZ gives you three. The extra Marvel slot does not mean four characters are simultaneously usable at every moment.
- Comeback path: In Marvel Tōkon, losing a round is explicitly one condition that makes later team members available. In Dragon Ball FighterZ, the conventional tag/support framework determines how your existing trio returns to play.
- Learning plan: Marvel’s developer has stated an intention that a player can master one character in order to play, while Dragon Ball FighterZ’s format naturally asks you to understand three-character team interactions.
Marvel’s design goal and the control options
At a June 4, 2025 PlayStation.Blog announcement, Game Director and Lead Battle Designer Kazuto Sekine said: “Generally, a team VS fighting game requires the player to learn multiple characters, but for MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, you only need to master one character in order to play the game.” The statement describes the developers’ design intent; it is not independent proof that the game is objectively easier.

- Replaceable top-panel artwork

The same announcement says both traditional and simple inputs are available. That gives newcomers a way to begin without requiring the same command-input commitment they might expect from a traditional fighting game, while leaving an option for players who prefer conventional controls. The relevant announcement is available at PlayStation.Blog.
Use that information as a fit test. If you want to focus first on one Marvel character and learn the rest of the team as matches develop, Marvel Tōkon’s stated approach is directly aimed at you. If you enjoy planning a complete trio and its support relationships from the character-select screen, Dragon Ball FighterZ’s 3v3 structure may feel more natural.

Franchise choice: Marvel heroes or Dragon Ball characters
Marvel Tōkon’s launch roster
PlayStation lists 20 playable characters at Marvel Tōkon’s launch. The appeal is therefore not an abstract superhero license: your choice is among a defined launch cast of Marvel heroes and villains. If the characters you actually want to play are in that 20-character roster, the game has a strong advantage before you compare modes or systems. Check the current roster on the official PlayStation page before buying, especially if one specific character is the reason for your decision.
Dragon Ball FighterZ’s universe and story hook
Dragon Ball FighterZ is built around the Dragon Ball universe and includes an exclusive story mode featuring Android 21, according to the official Bandai Namco page. That makes it the more direct choice for players whose priority is using Dragon Ball characters or seeing an original story connected to that setting.
Franchise preference should carry more weight than a generic feature checklist. A tag fighter demands practice, repetition, and familiarity with a roster. You are more likely to stick with the game whose characters you already want to learn, so choose the cast first when your attachment is clear.

Marvel Tōkon: PS5 and PC
PlayStation lists Marvel Tōkon’s launch as August 6, 2026 on PS5 and PC. Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Korea received the local calendar date August 7. The June 2025 announcement names PS5, Steam, and Epic for the launch plan, while the current product information identifies PS5 and PC and documents cross-play between them.

Dragon Ball FighterZ: a wider listed platform range
Bandai Namco’s official listing includes PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC storefront or platform options. Because storefront availability and editions can vary by country, confirm the regional product page before purchase. The listing also provides a direct PS5 purchase path, including physical and digital editions; verify the exact format, stock, and regional availability at checkout.
The cited Dragon Ball FighterZ material does not confirm current cross-play between those platforms. Do not infer cross-play from the number of platforms listed. If your buying decision depends on playing with friends on another system, obtain current platform-specific confirmation first.
Solo and offline content
Marvel Tōkon’s documented offline modes
The official Marvel Tōkon FAQ lists Episode Mode, local Versus, Training, All-Star Arena, Battle Guides, Character Guides, and additional modes. These give you several ways to play without relying on a live opponent: follow an episode-based experience, fight locally, practice mechanics, or use the guides to learn systems and characters.

- Authentic Qanba buttons and lever
- Full control panel, touch pad, Qanba 30-mm B30 buttons, and Qanba OV7 OMRON switch joystick
- 3.5-mm microphone input with mute button control
The FAQ distinguishes these offline activities from online play. The documented offline modes do not require the online account conditions described for networked modes. That distinction matters if you play on a connection with restrictions, want to practice while traveling, or simply prefer solo content before entering ranked matches. Read the official FAQ for the current account and mode requirements.
Dragon Ball FighterZ’s story mode
Bandai Namco highlights an exclusive story mode featuring Android 21. That is a concrete solo reason to choose the game if you want a Dragon Ball narrative rather than only arcade-style matches or training.
The cited official page does not provide a complete current list of Dragon Ball FighterZ’s offline modes, so it would be misleading to claim that its solo offering is larger or smaller than Marvel Tōkon’s. The evidence supports the existence and Android 21 focus of the story mode, not a complete mode-count comparison.

Marvel Tōkon’s online access
Marvel Tōkon documents an Online Lobby, rooms, ranked play, and casual play. Online modes require an internet connection and account access. On PC, the FAQ requires a PlayStation account; on PS5, online play requires PlayStation Plus. Those requirements apply to the networked features, not the documented offline modes.
The FAQ also covers cross-region lobby selection, which can matter if you regularly play friends or opponents in another region. A cross-play connection between PS5 and PC is supported, but your ability to use online features still depends on the platform account and subscription conditions that apply to your hardware.

Dragon Ball FighterZ’s named online activities
The official Dragon Ball FighterZ page lists ranked matches, an interactive lobby, and six-player Party Match. Party Match is the notable group option in the cited description: it is designed around six participants rather than a standard one-on-one ranked queue.
The available official material does not confirm the current subscription requirements or cross-play behavior for Dragon Ball FighterZ. Treat those as purchase-check items, particularly if you are comparing a console copy with a PC copy or planning a mixed-platform group.
Which game should you buy for specific situations?
Choose Marvel Tōkon when these statements describe you
- You primarily want Marvel heroes and villains, and the 20-character launch roster contains the characters you care about.
- You like the idea of a four-character team but do not want to master every teammate before you can start playing.
- You play on PS5 and PC with friends and need documented cross-play between those platforms.
- You want several explicitly documented offline options, including Episode Mode, local Versus, Training, All-Star Arena, Battle Guides, and Character Guides.
- You are comfortable buying a newer 2026 release whose long-term online population and balance have not been independently established by the cited evidence.
Choose Dragon Ball FighterZ when these statements describe you
- Dragon Ball characters matter more to you than the newer release date or the Marvel license.
- You prefer the familiar 3v3 tag/support model, with three characters selected as a complete team.
- You want ranked matches, an interactive lobby, and six-player Party Match as named online features.
- You want an exclusive story mode featuring Android 21.
- You need a game listed for a particular console family beyond PS5 or PC, such as Xbox or Switch, subject to regional edition checks.
Do not choose on these assumptions
- “Four characters must be better than three.” The team counts describe different systems; Marvel’s later two characters are accessed under match conditions.
- “The developer says one character, so it is definitely easier.” The quote is a design goal, not a measured difficulty result.
- “The newer game must have a larger online community.” No verified population comparison is available.
- “A listed platform means cross-play.” Dragon Ball FighterZ’s cited listing does not confirm current cross-play, while Marvel Tōkon explicitly documents PS5/PC cross-play.
- “A story-mode mention proves a complete offline comparison.” The Dragon Ball page names its story mode but does not provide a full current offline-mode list.
Buying checklist before you commit
- Confirm your preferred characters. Check Marvel Tōkon’s 20-character launch roster or Dragon Ball FighterZ’s current regional roster information before treating the license as sufficient.
- Match the team system to your habits. Decide whether you want Marvel’s four-character structure with later access conditions or Dragon Ball FighterZ’s complete 3v3 tag/support team.
- Check the exact platform edition. Marvel Tōkon is listed for PS5 and PC; Dragon Ball FighterZ is listed across PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC options, but regional versions can differ.
- Verify online prerequisites. Marvel Tōkon requires internet and account access for online modes, a PlayStation account on PC, and PlayStation Plus for PS5 online play. Confirm the equivalent current requirements for Dragon Ball FighterZ in your region.
- Plan for solo play. Marvel Tōkon’s FAQ explicitly lists its offline modes. Dragon Ball FighterZ’s official page confirms the Android 21 story but does not establish a complete offline catalogue.
- Buy the correct PS5 format if choosing Dragon Ball FighterZ. Bandai Namco lists physical and digital editions; check the regional listing, stock, and format before ordering.
What the available evidence cannot settle
Feature pages can establish formats and advertised modes, but they cannot answer every question a competitive player may have. No cited source establishes which game is better balanced, has the stronger netcode, maintains the larger active online population, or is more enjoyable in hands-on play. Those are separate questions requiring current testing or player-specific experience.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Accordingly, the recommendation here is deliberately fit-based. Marvel Tōkon has the documented advantages of a 2026 launch, PS5/PC cross-play, a four-character design, a 20-character launch roster, and a clearly listed offline suite. Dragon Ball FighterZ has the documented advantages of Dragon Ball’s cast, a conventional 3v3 tag/support structure, ranked and lobby features, six-player Party Match, and an Android 21 story mode. Pick the side whose distinctive features match how you intend to play rather than treating either feature list as an objective quality ranking.
