The short version: use Local Versus when your friend is beside you, or use a Room Match for a private online session. To practice online, create or join a friend’s Room Match and use the cabinet dedicated to online training. PS5 and PC support cross-play, but PS5 online play requires PlayStation Plus; PC online features require an internet connection and a PlayStation account.
What multiplayer in MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls actually supports
MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is built around head-to-head matches rather than a cooperative story campaign. Each match has two opposing players, and each player controls a four-character team. That format matters when you are planning a session: a group can gather in an online lobby, but the game does not turn a single match into a four-player or 64-player cooperative battle.

The available ways to play with friends are:
| Route | Use it when | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Local Versus | You are sharing one PS5 or PC and want an offline match | Two compatible controllers and the same system; no internet or PlayStation Plus for the offline mode |
| Room Match | You want a private online match with a friend | Internet access and the account requirements for your platform; PS5 also requires PlayStation Plus |
| Room Match training cabinet | You want to practice together online | The same online requirements as a Room Match |
| Ranked or Casual Match | You want online opponents outside a private friend room | Internet access and a platform account; PS5 also requires PlayStation Plus |
The PlayStation listing describes an online lobby that can hold up to 64 players. That is a lobby-capacity figure, not the number of people fighting at once. A normal match remains a two-player contest, with one four-character team on each side.
Playing locally on the same system
Choose Local Versus for couch play
If both players are in the same room, Local Versus is the straightforward option. The official game FAQ lists Local Versus among the offline modes, and the PlayStation product information describes facing a friend locally. Because this route is offline, it does not require an internet connection or PlayStation Plus.
#1 Best Overall
- Assemble your team of legendary Marvel characters in the ultimate 4v4 tag team fighter from PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works and Marvel Games.
- Experiment with team compositions to discover new combos, synergies, and strategies. Blast your way through dynamic stages based on iconic Marvel Universe locales, some featuring interactive stage transitions.
- Fighting is both immersive and intuitive, with a range of unique move sets, combos, and strategies to master. Adjustable controls, both traditional and quick inputs, plus easy chain combos make diving right in a breeze.
- Face off against a friend locally or join the fray with up to 64 players in the online lobby, including standard VS modes. Plus, dive deep on each team with the single player Episode Mode to learn more about team dynamics and lore.
- Connect a second compatible controller to the PS5 or PC.
- Start the game and choose the local Versus option from the mode selection.
- Have each player take a side and select a four-character team.
- Confirm the match settings and start the fight.
The exact on-screen wording can change with a release update or platform build, so use the mode label shown in your copy rather than relying on a button sequence from a different version. The important distinction is that you want the offline Versus route, not an online Room, Ranked, or Casual queue.
What local play does—and does not—need
- No internet connection is needed for Local Versus.
- No PlayStation Plus subscription is needed for this offline route.
- Both players use the same console or computer.
- The match is still two opposing players, each controlling a four-character team.
On PC, Steam identifies shared/split-screen PvP and shared/split-screen features. Make sure the computer recognizes both input devices before entering the match; if only one controller appears, check the operating system or Steam controller settings first, then return to the game’s local mode.
Playing online with a friend in a private room
Use Room Match for a private session
For an online friend match, use a Room Match. The official FAQ also refers to these as private rooms. One player creates the room and the other joins that friend’s room. This keeps the session separate from public matchmaking and is the appropriate choice when you already know whom you want to fight.
- Confirm that both players meet the platform’s online requirements shown below.
- Have one player create a Room Match (private room).
- Have the friend join that specific room using the game’s room-join flow.
- Once both players are together, select the versus activity offered by the room.
The official support material confirms the Room Match route but does not publish a complete, button-by-button menu map for creating a standard versus room. Menu names and prompts can therefore differ by platform or update. Do not treat an undocumented button combination as universal; follow the labels currently displayed in your game.
Online requirements by platform
| Platform | Internet | Account | Subscription condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | Required for online modes | PlayStation account | PlayStation Plus is required for online play |
| PC (Steam or Epic) | Required for online features | PlayStation account | No console subscription condition is stated; the PlayStation account and internet connection are required |
These are online-service requirements, not requirements for Local Versus. A PS5 player who only wants offline couch play does not need PlayStation Plus for that mode.
How to train together online
Use the dedicated training cabinet
MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls includes a way for two friends to practice in the same online session. The official instruction is specific: create or join a friend’s Room Match, then go to the cabinet dedicated to online training. Both players interact with the kiosk to access training together.
- Create or join your friend’s Room Match.
- Inside the room, locate the cabinet designated for online training.
- Have both players interact with the kiosk.
- Enter training and use the shared session to test characters, assists, team combinations, and matchup situations.
This is different from opening a solo training mode. The room-based cabinet is the supported path when you want your friend present in the same practice session. The FAQ does not provide additional menu prompts beyond that sequence, so the cabinet’s exact position or interaction wording should be read from the current in-game interface.

When online training is the better choice
- Use it when both players are in different homes but want live practice instead of a scored match.
- Use it to test a new four-character team before entering Ranked.
- Use it to recreate a difficult matchup without public opponents joining.
- Use Local Versus instead when you are physically together and want to avoid online requirements or connection issues.
Cross-play between PS5 and PC
Official PlayStation information confirms cross-play between PS5 and PC. A PS5 player can therefore play with a friend on the PC version, including when the two players are using different supported PC storefronts such as Steam and Epic, subject to the accounts and online service being available on each platform.
Cross-play does not remove platform requirements. The PS5 player still needs internet access and PlayStation Plus for online play. The PC player still needs internet access and a PlayStation account for online features.
Lobby size versus match size
The online lobby is listed as supporting up to 64 players. Think of that as a gathering space in which players can find rooms or other activities. It does not mean 64 people attack one another simultaneously, and it does not turn the four-character teams into 64-player squads. The official match format remains two opposing players, one team of four characters per player.
Choosing another region’s lobby
The official FAQ says players may choose a lobby in another region when that lobby is not full. This can help friends who are not seeing the same regional lobby, but a distant region may produce a less responsive connection because data has farther to travel. Treat the region choice as a practical connectivity decision: start with the region closest to the players, then try another available region only if necessary.

Ranked Match
Ranked play is for online competition outside a private friend room. It is the appropriate route when you want the game’s competitive matchmaking experience and are prepared to face opponents selected through the online service. It is not the same as inviting a specific friend into a private Room Match.
Casual Match
Casual play provides another public online option without the ranked context. Choose it when you want online fights but do not want the result treated as a ranked contest. Both Ranked and Casual use the online requirements for your platform.
If your goal is specifically “my friend versus me,” start with Room Match. If your goal is “find an online opponent,” use Ranked or Casual. The lobby may contain many players, but each individual fight still follows the two-player, four-character-team format.

Controllers and local setup
Arcade sticks and leverless controllers are optional. The official FAQ says any PS5-compatible arcade stick or leverless controller can be used on PS5. PC players should check whether their particular hardware is compatible with the computer and game before relying on it for a local or online session.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a couch session
- Connect and test both controllers before launching Local Versus.
- Use two input devices that the same system can identify simultaneously.
- Assign each device to a player when the platform prompts you.
- Keep a standard controller available if an arcade stick or leverless device is not recognized.
For an online session
- Test each player’s controller in the platform’s normal input settings before joining the room.
- On PC, verify that the selected input device is enabled in the storefront or operating-system settings.
- Do not assume a PS5-compatible accessory will work on PC without checking the hardware’s PC support.
Troubleshooting friend multiplayer
Your friend cannot join the session
- Confirm that both players are using a supported version: PS5 or PC through Steam or Epic.
- Check that both players have an internet connection and the required platform account.
- On PS5, verify that the account has PlayStation Plus for online play.
- Make sure the host created a Room Match rather than entering Ranked or Casual matchmaking.
- If the intended regional lobby is full, try the available lobby region permitted by the game.
You expected local play but were sent online
Return to the mode selection and choose Local Versus. Local Versus is the offline option for two people sharing one system; Room Match, Ranked, and Casual are online routes.
Online practice is not available
Do not look for a separate public training queue. The supported friend-training sequence starts inside a Room Match: create or join the room, then use the dedicated online-training cabinet. Both players must interact with that kiosk.
You expected a cooperative campaign or a four-player fight
The supported match structure is competitive: two opposing players, with one four-character team per player. The available multiplayer information does not describe a cooperative campaign or a simultaneous four-player battle, so plan your session around versus matches and the shared online training cabinet.
The room has many people, but only two can fight
That is normal. The listed capacity of up to 64 applies to the online lobby. It is not a per-match player count. Other players can occupy the lobby while your individual fight remains a two-player match.
Which multiplayer route should you choose?
| Your situation | Best route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You are sitting at the same PS5 or PC | Local Versus | Offline couch play; no internet or PS Plus needed |
| You are on different systems and want a private fight | Room Match | Invites a specific friend into an online private room |
| You want to lab a matchup together | Room Match training cabinet | Both players can enter the dedicated online training session |
| You want opponents selected by the online service | Ranked or Casual Match | Public online matchmaking rather than a private friend room |
| One player has PS5 and the other has PC | Room Match with cross-play | PS5-to-PC cross-play is supported, with each platform’s online requirements |
Platforms, release timing, and editions
The game is listed for PS5 and PC, with PC availability through Steam and Epic. The official FAQ names an August 6, 2026 launch time in UTC, while regional timing can move the calendar date. PlayStation lists August 6, 2026, and notes August 7 in New Zealand, Australia, Japan, and Korea. If you are arranging a launch-day session, check the store’s local countdown rather than assuming every region unlocks on the same date.
The official support FAQ also confirms that a physical PS5 Standard Edition exists. That identifies the edition, but it does not establish a current retailer price or stock level. For multiplayer planning, the important distinction is the platform on which the game is running and whether that platform’s online requirements are met.
A quick pre-session checklist
- Same room? Choose Local Versus.
- Different locations? Create or join a Room Match.
- Want practice? Use the dedicated training cabinet inside that room.
- PS5 online? Confirm internet access and PlayStation Plus.
- PC online? Confirm internet access and a PlayStation account.
- Different platforms? PS5-to-PC cross-play is supported.
- Expecting a large battle? The lobby may hold up to 64 players, but a match has two opposing players.
- Using specialist controls? Verify PS5 compatibility or PC support before the session.
Once those choices are clear, the practical answer is simple: Local Versus for couch play, Room Match for a private online friend match, and the Room Match training cabinet for practicing together.
