Start in Startup Battle, use the Light (□), Medium (△), and Heavy (○) buttons to learn simple Link Attacks, and practice assists before trying rapid character switches. The fundamentals are deliberately approachable: Quick Skills use a single button, while Command Inputs reward practice with slightly more damage and Skill Gauge. The PlayStation button symbols below come from the official beginner guide; PC prompts, remapped layouts, and other controllers may display different inputs.
What to learn first
MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a four-character team fighter, but you do not need to master four move sets before you can play. Game Director and Lead Battle Designer Kazuto Sekine describes the design this way: “Generally, a team VS fighting game requires the player to learn multiple characters, but for MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, you only need to master one character in order to play the game.” That is a developer description of the design, not a measured claim about how quickly every player will improve. Use this progression instead of trying to memorize the entire roster:
- Complete the Basics lessons in Startup Battle with Captain America.
- Learn one Light, Medium, and Heavy Link Attack route.
- Add a Skill, then practice an Assemble Rush and follow-up attack.
- Learn when to call an assist and when to switch.
- Use Training Mode to test defense, frame data, damage, and recorded bot situations.
The official beginner guide divides Startup Battle into Basics, which covers individual actions, and Assemble, which teaches team mechanics. Treat it as your first tutorial even if you already play other fighting games. The guide was published for the July 20, 2026 open beta, so check the current in-game tutorial and control settings if a prompt differs from the instructions below. Open the official beginner guide.

MARVEL Tōkon controls on PlayStation
These are the PlayStation-style glyphs used in the published guide. The same actions can appear under different labels on PC or after remapping.
| Action | Input | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Light attack | □ | Fast attack used to start simple routes. |
| Medium attack | △ | Stronger normal attack for Link Attack sequences. |
| Heavy attack | ○ | Heavy normal attack that can route into an Ultimate Skill. |
| Guard | Hold ← | Standing guard. |
| Crouching guard | Hold ↙ | Low defensive position. |
| Assemble Assist | × | Calls a teammate without leaving your current character immediately. |
| Character selection for assists | Neutral or →: second; ↓: third; ←: fourth | Chooses which teammate answers the assist call. |
| Direct switch | Direction + L2 | Switches to the teammate assigned to that direction. |
If your controller has been remapped, the symbol is not a reliable instruction. Open the control configuration from Character Select, the mid-match pause menu, or Options and verify each assignment before practicing.
Build your first combos with Link Attacks
Link Attacks are the beginner-friendly way to connect repeated attacks. Pressing the same attack button several times creates a sequence, so you can concentrate on timing and spacing rather than learning a complicated motion immediately.
Recommended Free Tools
| Starter route | Result described by the guide | What to practice |
|---|---|---|
| L → L → L → L | Routes into a Skill that can trigger a Break. | Confirm that the full Light sequence connects before adding other actions. |
| M → M → M | Leads to a Super Skill. | Watch the opponent’s position and learn the range at which the Medium chain works. |
| H → H → H | Leads to an Ultimate Skill. | Use it after you are comfortable with the slower Heavy timing. |
Once the repeated-button routes feel consistent, try the more involved example from the official guide: L → M → H → Skill → Assemble Rush → Follow-up Attack. Do not treat that sequence as a universal, best-damage combo; it is a practice route that introduces the game’s team mechanics. Learn each link separately, then connect them in order.
How to practice a route
- Enter Training Mode and set the bot to a predictable state.
- Perform the Light chain until you can finish it without watching your fingers.
- Add the Skill only after the chain consistently reaches the opponent.
- Reset, then practice the Medium and Heavy chains independently.
- Record the complete route and replay it against the bot to check whether your timing works from both sides of the screen.
Quick Skills versus Command Inputs
The game offers two ways to perform Skills. Quick Skill assigns a Skill to one button. Command Inputs use traditional fighting-game motions. The official guide recommends Quick Skills while you learn the fundamentals; you can change the Quick Skill button in the control settings.

- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
| Input style | New-player advantage | Published trade-off | Best time to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quick Skill | One-button execution makes it easier to concentrate on movement, defense, and confirms. | No extra benefit is stated in the guide. | Start here while learning a character and team. |
| Command Input | Builds traditional motion-input familiarity. | Slightly more damage and more Skill Gauge, according to the official guide. | Add it after you can perform the move reliably under pressure. |
Neither option is presented as a measured guarantee of better match results. The practical decision is reliability versus the stated in-game reward: a missed motion does no damage, while a Quick Skill you can execute on demand gives you a dependable answer.
Defense: guard, Assemble Counter, and Crossover
Basic guard
Hold ← for a standing guard or ↙ for a crouching guard. Practice switching between the two while the training bot attacks. Your first defensive goal is not to punish everything; it is to stop panicking and block long enough to recognize when the opponent’s sequence ends.
Assemble Counter
Press □ + × while you are not guarding. Your character backsteps and automatically counterattacks if the opponent attacks during the maneuver. Startup Battle includes practice for this option. Use it as a rehearsed escape when you expect an attack, not as a button to press randomly.
Crossover
Press □ + × while guarding. Crossover calls a teammate to interrupt the opponent and create a counteroffensive opening. Because it requires you to be blocking, first practice holding guard, confirming the incoming attack, and then pressing both buttons together.
Assists and character switching
Press × to call an Assemble Assist. Directional selection determines which teammate responds: neutral or → selects the second character, ↓ selects the third, and ← selects the fourth. This lets your active fighter keep acting while a teammate contributes an attack or interruption.

A direct switch uses a direction plus L2. The official guide recommends learning assists first. After an assist, an on-screen “Switch?” prompt appears briefly; press L2 during that window to transition to the assisting character. This is easier to learn than attempting arbitrary switches in the middle of every exchange.

- Only then combine an assist with the L → M → H practice route.
How the four-character team becomes available
A match begins with only the first two selected characters available. According to the official FAQ, you can assemble the rest of the four-character team after a qualifying stage break or wall splat, or by losing a round. The FAQ describes qualifying breaks as coming from certain attacks or throws, selected Skill attacks, or a successful Light-route Link Attack near the edge of the screen. This means your opening plan is not simply “tag through all four characters”: first create the situation that unlocks the rest of the team.
Because the exact break conditions depend on the attack or situation, use Training Mode to test which actions produce a break for your chosen character. Do not assume that every throw, Skill, or Link Attack qualifies.
Choosing a first character and team
Look at the Ease of Use stars on the character-select screen. More stars indicate a character intended to be easier to use. The official guide names Captain America, Ms. Marvel, and Wolverine as beginner-friendly, and describes Iron Man and Spider-Man as relatively easy to learn. It identifies Storm and Danger as more advanced choices.
How to narrow the choice
- Pick the character whose movement, attacks, or personality you actually enjoy; motivation matters more than forcing an allegedly optimal pick.
- Use the Ease of Use stars as a starting signal, not a ranking of strength.
- Learn one character deeply before adding a second. The game’s design allows you to play while mastering one character.
- Expand the roster gradually after you understand your first character’s neutral attack, Skill, defense, and assist call.
For team structure, the guide gives close-range Wolverine paired with ranged Iron Man as one example. That is an illustration rather than a mandatory composition. Try contrasting ranges, then keep the team whose assists and switches make sense to you.

Training Mode: the fastest way to remove guesswork
Training Mode includes command-input, frame-data, and damage displays; scenario presets; bot behavior settings; and the ability to record and replay a bot. It supports local two-player training, and friends can practice online in a Room Match training cabinet. Startup Battle and Training Mode are built into the game, so the official beginner path does not require a paid training product.
A useful 20-minute routine
- Five minutes—execution: perform L → L → L → L, M → M → M, and H → H → H from both sides.
- Five minutes—defense: alternate standing and crouching guard, then practice Assemble Counter and Crossover.
- Five minutes—team mechanics: call each assist, identify the directional selection, and switch during the “Switch?” prompt.
- Five minutes—verification: turn on frame-data and damage displays, record the bot attacking, and test the route you intend to use in a match.
Use the displays to answer specific questions—whether a move connects, where a gap appears, and how much damage a route causes—rather than trying to memorize every number.

Common beginner mistakes and fixes
Trying Command Inputs too early
If a motion fails during a real exchange, switch to Quick Skill while you learn spacing and confirms. Return to the motion after the route is reliable.

Calling every teammate at once
Start with one assist and learn its timing. Add the other directional selections only after you can identify who will answer.
Ignoring the “Switch?” window
An assist and a direct switch are separate actions. Practice pressing L2 during the brief prompt immediately after the assist.
Practicing only one side
Run every route facing left and right. Motion comfort and directional selections can feel different when your character changes sides.
