MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a 4v4 tag-team fighter, but you do not have all four characters available from the opening moment. Each player brings a four-character team, starts the match with access to two fighters, then assembles the third and fourth after a successful stage transition or wall-bounce event—or after losing a round. That progressive team assembly is the central idea to understand before choosing a team.
The launch roster contains 20 playable characters. Official announcements confirm the Fighting Avengers and Knights of Doom as themed examples, while Phoenix Cyclops is announced separately as upcoming Year 1 Pass DLC for November 2, 2026. The information below separates confirmed roster facts from team-building advice and avoids treating selected team announcements as a complete character list.

How the 4v4 team system works
You bring four characters, but begin with two
Every match has two players, and each player controls a team of four characters. The important distinction is that the complete team is not necessarily active or accessible at the first second of the match. PlayStation’s official FAQ describes a progressive system: each player begins with their first two characters and can assemble the third and fourth during the match.

This changes what “team building” means. You are not simply selecting four fighters and immediately rotating through all of them. Your opening pair must function on its own while also creating the conditions that let you reach the rest of your lineup. The later characters become part of the match through specific progression events rather than appearing automatically on a timer.

How the third and fourth characters become available
The official explanation identifies three routes to expanding your accessible team:
- A successful stage transition.
- A successful wall-bounce event.
- Losing a round.
Stage transitions and wall-bounces can be triggered by particular moves, combos, or a throw near the edge of an area. The exact move requirements are character- and situation-dependent, so the practical task is to learn which attacks and routes in your team can create those events. A lost round also functions as a comeback-oriented way to assemble additional team members.
Because the game does not require all four characters at once, a player can focus on building a reliable opening plan and then learn how to unlock the remaining pair. That is different from a conventional tag fighter in which every selected character is immediately available for assists or swaps.

Why the unlock rule matters in a match
The first two characters determine your early options: your initial range, movement, pressure style and access to stage-positioning tools. Once a transition or wall-bounce succeeds, your available options widen. If you lose a round, the game can also give you access to more of the team, allowing the next round to play differently.
Do not assume that a four-character roster is automatically strongest when all four are available. The system rewards a plan for the opening phase, a way to create the required event, and a clear idea of what the newly assembled characters add. A team whose first two fighters cover different distances may be more practical for learning than four characters that demand the same position, even though the official material does not establish a competitive tier list or a universally strongest combination.
How many characters are in Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls?
PlayStation’s current FAQ lists 20 playable characters at launch. The game launched on PS5 and PC on August 6, 2026, in most regions. PlayStation lists August 7 for New Zealand, Australia, Japan and Korea in its launch information.

That number describes the launch game, not every character announced for post-launch content. The official sources reviewed do not provide a complete, current character-by-character roster table in the team announcements cited here. Consequently, a named team announcement should be read as confirmation of those members—not as proof that the announcement lists every playable fighter.

These two examples show how the game can connect familiar Marvel identities with distinct combat styles. They should not be treated as preset teams that limit your own construction choices unless the game’s current interface explicitly offers them as such.
What the roster selection is designed to accomplish
Arc System Works producer Takeshi Yamanaka said the roster was chosen around three goals: include characters considered the “face” of Marvel, maintain a balance of battle types and styles, and add surprises, including characters who had never been playable in a fighting game before. That statement explains the selection philosophy, but it does not rank characters or guarantee that every style is represented equally.
“There are so many amazing Marvel characters that it was quite a struggle to choose our roster, but we did have some criteria for the selection process. First and foremost, we wanted to include characters who we feel to be the ‘face’ of Marvel. At the same time, we also needed to select characters that would give us a balance of battle types and styles. Lastly, we wanted to sprinkle in a few surprises and leave room for characters who have never been playable in a fighting game before.”

The result is best understood as a roster built for variety rather than a catalog in which every character fills the same job. When you compare potential mains, use observable questions—range, attack style, movement, role and input preference—instead of assuming that a character’s comic-book power automatically predicts their in-game function.

A practical framework for building your four-character team
The official material does not publish a complete matchup chart or verified competitive rankings, so team construction should begin with controllable, testable criteria. The following framework works whether you are a Marvel fan choosing by character or a player optimizing how the opening and later phases fit together.
1. Choose an opening anchor
Start with the character you are most willing to control for long stretches. This is especially important because you begin with two fighters, not four. Your anchor should have a game plan you can execute consistently at the ranges where you expect to fight. Test normal attacks, movement, defensive options and your simplest special-move routes in Training Mode.
2. Give the second starter a different answer
Use the second opening character to cover a problem the anchor does not solve. That might mean a different effective range, a different attack rhythm, stronger movement or a different role in creating pressure. The point is not to force a classic “point” and “anchor” template; it is to avoid having both opening fighters fail in the same situations.
3. Decide what you want the later two to add
The third and fourth characters are assembled after a transition, wall-bounce or round loss. Before a match, write down what you want those later slots to provide: a safer way to approach, a different range, a new pressure pattern, or a character whose movement lets you change the pace. This turns the unlock mechanic into a plan rather than a surprise.
4. Match the team to your input preference
Some players prefer traditional fighting-game commands; others want simple inputs. Since the game supports both approaches, choose characters whose important actions remain comfortable with the input method you intend to use. A theoretically useful character is not useful to you if the commands prevent you from reacting or confirming your attacks.

How to practice the team-assembly mechanic
- Enter Training Mode. Use it to learn movement, basic attacks and the character-specific actions that can lead to a wall-bounce or stage transition.
- Practice the edge situation. Move the opponent toward an area boundary and test throws, combos and the moves that the game identifies as transition or wall-bounce tools. Do not assume every attack triggers the event; the official description refers to specific moves, combos or a throw near the edge.
- Build a short route. Find a repeatable sequence that reaches the event without requiring your hardest execution. The best learning route is the one you can recognize and reproduce in a real match.
- Repeat with the second starter. Your opening characters may reach the progression event in different ways. Knowing both routes prevents your team plan from depending on only one fighter.
- Play a round after unlocking a new member. Check how the new character changes your available ranges, movement and pressure. The purpose is to understand the practical difference between the opening phase and the expanded team.
- Use a lost round as a deliberate learning state. Since losing a round can assemble the third and fourth characters, practice the next round with the larger team rather than treating the loss as the end of your plan.
This process does not prove which team is competitively best. It gives you a repeatable way to understand the game’s defining progression rule and to discover whether your chosen characters work together under the conditions the match actually creates.

Is the game designed for one-character specialists?
Game Director and Lead Battle Designer Kazuto Sekine said the design aims to let players focus on one character if they prefer. His explanation is a statement of design intent, not independent evidence that the game is easy or that mastering only one character is optimal in high-level play.

For a beginner, that means you can make your anchor the main study project while learning only the essential functions of the other three characters at first. You still need to understand when those fighters become available and what role they serve, but you do not have to begin by memorizing four complete move sets.
Sekine also said the team chose a 4v4 system to create over-the-top moments while evolving the tag-fighting genre. In practical terms, the format is intended to combine spectacle with a manageable learning focus: one deeply practiced character, supported by a team plan that grows during the match.

PlayStation confirms that any PS5-compatible arcade stick or leverless controller can be used, and that button inputs can be customized. These are optional equipment choices. A dedicated fight stick is not required to play, and the official information does not claim that one controller type is faster or more competitive.

Modes, platforms and online requirements
The game is available on PS5 and PC. PlayStation lists PS5 and PC cross-play support, so players on the two platforms can play together where the relevant online services are available.

What the official information does—and does not—tell you
The confirmed facts support a clear explanation of the roster size, team-assembly mechanic, selected team examples, controls, modes and platform requirements. They do not support a complete current roster table, a matchup chart, a tier list, or a claim that the Fighting Avengers, Knights of Doom or any other named group is the strongest team.
When choosing a main, rely on what you can observe and reproduce: range, attack style, movement, role and input comfort. Then test how the first two characters function before the team expands and what the later two contribute after a transition, wall-bounce or round loss. That approach respects the game’s actual 4v4 structure instead of treating it like a conventional four-character selection screen.
