Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls Beginner’s Guide to Teams, Controls, and Combat

The fastest way to learn MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is to pick a hero you already like, complete Startup Battle’s Basics and Assemble lessons, then practice one short Link Attack and one defensive response at a time. You do not need to understand all 20 launch characters or every team interaction before playing a match. The game is built so you can begin with two characters, learn the fundamentals, and bring the rest of your selected team into play after key match events.

This guide follows the released game’s documented systems, while separating the pre-release beta advice in the July 20, 2026 beginner guide from the current offline and online features listed in the official FAQ.

How do I start playing Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls?

Use this first-session route:

  1. Choose a character you want to spend time with, using the Ease of Use stars as a rough complexity guide.
  2. Enter Startup Battle and complete Basics with Captain America.
  3. Complete Assemble so you understand team actions, not just individual attacks.
  4. In Training Mode, repeat one Link Attack until the inputs feel predictable.
  5. Practice standing Guard, crouching Guard, Assemble Counter, and Crossover against a simple recorded or preset attack.
  6. Play a local or online match with a specific goal, such as landing your Link Attack once or blocking three approaches.

The official beginner guide by Kazuto Sekine, Game Director and Lead Battle Designer at Arc System Works, recommends beginning with the hero you like most and expanding your roster gradually. That advice matters here because a familiar character gives you a reason to keep practicing while you learn the game’s unusual four-character team structure. The guide’s original publication date was July 20, 2026, ahead of the July 24–26 Open Beta; its teaching sections remain useful, but its beta schedule is historical.

The PlayStation Store lists a PS5 release date of August 6, 2026. A launch announcement described the PS5 and PC release as August 7 in Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and Korea, so those dates should be read as the published regional schedule rather than a guarantee about a particular territory’s current storefront.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls- PlayStation 5
  • Assemble your team of legendary Marvel characters in the ultimate 4v4 tag team fighter from PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works and Marvel Games.
  • Experiment with team compositions to discover new combos, synergies, and strategies. Blast your way through dynamic stages based on iconic Marvel Universe locales, some featuring interactive stage transitions.
  • Fighting is both immersive and intuitive, with a range of unique move sets, combos, and strategies to master. Adjustable controls, both traditional and quick inputs, plus easy chain combos make diving right in a breeze.
  • Face off against a friend locally or join the fray with up to 64 players in the online lobby, including standard VS modes. Plus, dive deep on each team with the single player Episode Mode to learn more about team dynamics and lore.

Which character should I pick first?

At character select, look at the Ease of Use stars. More stars mean the character is easier to use according to the official guide; they do not mean that character is stronger. Start with a hero whose attacks and personality appeal to you, then use the stars to avoid choosing a character whose execution is likely to distract you during your first session.

Beginner-friendly examples

  • Captain America: the character used to teach the core Startup Battle lessons.
  • Ms. Marvel: one of the guide’s recommended starting choices.
  • Wolverine: a direct, aggressive melee example that is easy to understand at close range.
  • Iron Man: described as relatively easy to learn and useful for understanding ranged attacks.
  • Spider-Man: another relatively easy option named by the guide.

Characters to leave for later if you want the simplest first lesson

Storm and Danger are presented as more advanced choices. You can select them immediately if they are the reason you bought the game, but expect to spend more time learning their character-specific actions before the basic team flow feels natural.

Build a team by contrasting roles, not by chasing a “best” team

The official example pairs Wolverine’s aggressive melee style with Iron Man’s powerful ranged attacks. That is a useful learning contrast: one character gives you a clear close-range plan, while the other lets you understand how distance changes an exchange. It is not an objective tier list or a promise that the pair is optimal after a balance update. Try combinations that fit your preferences, and remember that the game lets you rely on a learned character throughout a match.

How do the teams work?

You select a team of four characters, but you do not begin with all four on screen or immediately available. The official FAQ explains that the first two selected characters are available at the start. The remaining members are assembled after a Break or after you lose a round. This staged availability is intentional, so do not assume that an unselectable teammate has disappeared or that your team setup failed.

What causes a Break?

The FAQ lists several possible triggers:

  • Certain attacks or throws.
  • Selected Skill attacks.
  • A successful light-route Link Attack performed near the edge of the screen.

A Break can produce a stage transition or a wall splat. These moments also explain why team mechanics become more important as a match develops: the later characters you selected are tied to successful offensive sequences and round progression rather than being available from the first second.

A practical first team

For your first few matches, choose one character whose close-range plan you understand and one whose long-range plan is obvious. Wolverine and Iron Man are the official guide’s example. Fill the other two slots with heroes you want to learn instead of trying to construct a supposedly unbeatable lineup. Your immediate objective is to recognize when the first pair is active, identify what causes a Break, and then notice how the newly assembled teammate changes your options.

What are the basic controls?

Startup Battle’s Basics section teaches individual-character actions through Captain America. The guide names three normal attack strengths:

Attack PS5 button How to use it while learning
Light □ Use it to begin the simplest Link Attack routes and test your timing.
Medium △ Use it as the middle-strength button in the medium route.
Heavy ○ Use it for the heavy route that leads toward an Ultimate Skill.

The tutorial also introduces combos, Skills, and character-specific actions. The exact behavior of a button depends on the character and situation, so treat the table as the common control naming used by the guide, not as a complete move list.

Learn team mechanics in Assemble

After Basics, continue to Assemble. This section teaches cooperative actions and the team systems that distinguish Tōkon: Fighting Souls from a conventional one-character fighter. A new player who stops after learning individual attacks may know how to press buttons but still miss the reason for Breaks, teammate calls, and defensive team actions.

Button configuration is available in the game’s settings. If a command is uncomfortable, check the assigned buttons and the Quick Skill button before concluding that a move is impossible. The official FAQ also documents PS5 platform-level remapping and Access Controller support.

Which beginner combos should I learn?

The official guide’s Link Attack examples are deliberately short. They are starting routes, not guaranteed optimal combos for every character or future patch.

Route What the guide says it leads to First practice target
Light → Light → Light → Light Chains into a Skill and can trigger a Break, described as a stage transition. Repeat the four Light presses, then confirm whether the Skill or Break occurs in your situation.
Medium → Medium → Medium Leads into a Super Skill. Practice the three Medium presses without adding extra buttons.
Heavy → Heavy → Heavy Leads into an Ultimate Skill. Learn when the three Heavy inputs are accepted and watch the resulting resource or animation.

Once those routes are comfortable, the guide gives a more advanced sequence: Light → Medium → Heavy → Skill → Assemble Rush → Follow-up Attack. Do not make this your first test. It combines normal attacks, a Skill, and team actions, so it is better used after you can perform one of the shorter routes without looking at the controller.

How to practice a Link Attack

  1. Open Training Mode and select the character you want to keep.
  2. Choose one route only, beginning with Light → Light → Light → Light.
  3. Perform it slowly enough to identify each accepted input.
  4. Repeat until the sequence works several times in a row, then test it from a realistic distance.
  5. Try the route near the edge of the screen so you can see whether the conditions for a Break are met.
  6. Only after that, add the follow-up Skill or team action.

This method isolates a single decision instead of asking you to memorize the entire roster. Training Mode provides command-input, frame-data, and damage displays, plus scenario presets, bot settings, and recording/replay for bots, according to the official FAQ.

How do I defend myself?

Start with Guard. Hold back for a standing Guard and hold down-back for a crouching Guard. Practice switching between the two while a training bot repeats a predictable attack. Defense is not an optional advanced topic: blocking gives you time to recognize what the opponent is doing and prevents every exchange from becoming a scramble.

Assemble Counter

Press □ + × while not guarding. Assemble Counter performs a backstep and can automatically counter an attack during the maneuver. Use it when you expect an opponent to attack rather than pressing it randomly; the move is a defensive read with a specific timing window.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Crossover

Press □ + × while guarding. Crossover calls in a teammate to interrupt the opponent and create a counteroffensive opening. Because it requires you to be guarding, first make sure you can hold a block consistently before trying to add the input.

A simple defensive drill

  1. Set a training bot to repeat a basic attack.
  2. Block the attack with standing Guard and then with crouching Guard.
  3. After the block feels reliable, test Assemble Counter while not guarding.
  4. Reset the scenario and test Crossover while guarding.
  5. Change only one setting or attack at a time so you know which defensive option worked.

The goal is not to counter everything. It is to recognize three states—standing block, crouching block, and a team defensive response—so you have an answer when an opponent approaches.

Should I use Quick Skills or motion inputs?

The game offers traditional Command Inputs, also called motion inputs, and a Quick Skill option that executes a Skill with one button. The official guide recommends starting with Quick Skills while you learn, then trying Command Inputs inside combos as your comfort grows.

Input style Complexity Officially stated trade-off Best first use
Quick Skills One-button Skill execution; the Quick Skill button can be customized. The guide does not state a damage or gauge bonus for Quick Skills. Learn a character’s neutral game and complete your first combos without execution becoming the main problem.
Command Inputs Traditional motion commands performed with the directional controls and attack buttons. The guide says they offer slightly higher damage and generate more Skill Gauge. Add them to a combo after you can already perform the route with Quick Skills.

There is no need to choose permanently. Use Quick Skills to understand spacing, confirms, and team flow, then replace individual Skill inputs with Command Inputs when you want the stated damage and Skill Gauge benefits. If the motion is inconsistent, return to the one-button version and keep practicing the decision rather than dropping the character.

Which modes should a new player use?

Startup Battle

Startup Battle is the most direct introduction. Basics covers individual actions, while Assemble introduces team mechanics and cooperative actions. A player new to fighting games should take both sections at their own pace. Someone already familiar with the genre can skip Basics and go directly to Assemble, but skipping the team lesson means skipping the system most likely to feel unfamiliar.

Training Mode

The released game’s FAQ lists Training Mode among its offline content. It includes command-input, frame-data, and damage displays, scenario presets, bot settings, and recording/replay for bots. The FAQ also describes local two-player training and an online training option in a Room Match. Use these tools for a narrow objective: one Link Attack, one defense option, or one team action after a Break.

Other offline modes

The FAQ lists offline Episode Mode, local Versus, All-Star Arena, Battle Guides, and Character Guides. Arcadia Rumble is also playable offline with optional online features. The beta-era beginner guide discussed Episode Mode in the context of beta access; the current FAQ is the appropriate source for the released game’s offline mode list.

Online and lobby play

The PlayStation Store listing describes a 64-player online lobby. Online requirements differ by platform: PS5 online features require an internet connection and PlayStation Plus, while PC online features require an internet connection and a PlayStation account. Offline PS5 content does not require PlayStation Plus, and PC offline modes do not require a PlayStation account, according to the FAQ.

PS5 and PC requirements

The official FAQ lists the following Windows requirements. It is worth checking the FAQ again before installing because technical requirements can be revised.

Specification Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows 11 Windows 11
Memory 16 GB RAM 16 GB RAM
Processor Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600X Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600X
Graphics NVIDIA RTX 2060 6GB or AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT 8GB NVIDIA RTX 3070 8GB or AMD Radeon RX 7600 XT 16GB

These are the published specifications, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or image-quality setting. If your PC is below them, the sensible first step is to compare your hardware with the listed CPU, GPU, operating system, and memory requirements before troubleshooting controls or online connections.

Accessibility and language options

The FAQ states that the game supports 17 languages: 10 with full localization and seven with text-only support. Text-to-speech is available for all 17 supported languages. You can also adjust CPU difficulty and configure buttons. On PS5, platform-level remapping and Access Controller support are documented. The PlayStation Store listing additionally identifies practice mode, control reminders, tutorial reminders, and offline pausing as accessibility-related features.

Use these settings as part of setup, not as emergency fixes. Select your language, configure the Quick Skill button, and adjust CPU difficulty before beginning a long session so your practice measures the game’s systems rather than an uncomfortable control layout.

A practical first-session plan

First 15 minutes: understand your character

  • Pick one recommended beginner character or your favorite hero.
  • Read the character’s guide and try Light, Medium, Heavy, Skill, and the character-specific action.
  • Do not switch characters after every failed input; identify what the current character is trying to do at close or long range.

Next 15 minutes: learn the team flow

  • Complete Assemble in Startup Battle.
  • Look at your four-character selection and remember that only the first two are available initially.
  • Trigger or observe a Break, then note how the stage transition, wall splat, or newly assembled teammate changes the situation.

Next 20 minutes: add one offense and one defense

  • Perform Light → Light → Light → Light repeatedly.
  • Practice standing Guard and crouching Guard.
  • Test Assemble Counter while not guarding, then Crossover while guarding.

First match: set one measurable goal

Play local Versus, Episode Mode, or an online match if your platform requirements are met. Choose one goal before the round starts: land the Light route once, block an approach, or use Crossover after a successful Guard. A narrow goal gives you useful feedback even when you lose and prevents the first match from becoming a blur of unplanned button presses.

Common beginner problems and fixes

“My other two characters are missing.”

They are not missing. The FAQ says the first two selected characters are available at the start; the remaining members are assembled after a Break or a lost round. Focus on learning the opening pair and watch for the events that unlock the rest.

“I keep pressing buttons but never reach the Skill.”

Return to a short Link Attack and remove extra inputs. Practice Light → Light → Light → Light, Medium → Medium → Medium, or Heavy → Heavy → Heavy separately. Once the normal sequence is reliable, add the Skill or team follow-up.

“My motion inputs fail, so I cannot play the character.”

Switch to Quick Skills, whose button can be customized, and continue learning spacing and confirms. Later, substitute Command Inputs one at a time. The official guide’s stated benefit for Command Inputs is slightly higher damage and more Skill Gauge, not access to the character’s basic game plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I get hit whenever I try a counter.”

Check the state required by each move. Assemble Counter uses □ + × while you are not guarding; Crossover uses □ + × while guarding. Practice each against a predictable recorded attack instead of trying to react to every move in a live match.

“Online play is unavailable.”

On PS5, verify the internet connection and PlayStation Plus requirement. On PC, verify the internet connection and PlayStation account requirement. If you only want to practice, use the documented offline modes; the FAQ says offline PS5 content does not need PlayStation Plus and PC offline modes do not need a PlayStation account.

What you should know before moving beyond the basics

After one or two sessions, you should be able to identify your character’s basic range, perform one short Link Attack, recognize the difference between standing and crouching Guard, and explain why the full four-character team is not available immediately. You should also know which input style lets you learn comfortably and when a Break or lost round brings additional teammates into play.

From there, deepen one layer at a time: add the advanced Light → Medium → Heavy → Skill → Assemble Rush → Follow-up Attack route, test a different team role, and use Training Mode’s displays and recordings to investigate a specific question. The game’s 20-character launch roster, extensive offline content, and adjustable controls give you room to expand without requiring complete mastery on day one.
