At launch, only your first two selected teammates are available immediately; the others join after a qualifying break or a lost round.
Start with one character, then learn the team controls
The game’s team format is designed to let you focus on one fighter while teammates enter through assists and switches. Kazuto Sekine, Game Director and Lead Battle Designer at Arc System Works, explained that players can learn one character and still see teammates come in and out of battle in a PlayStation Blog interview published August 11, 2025.

For a first pick, check the character-select screen’s Ease of Use rating: more stars mean the game presents that character as easier to use. PlayStation’s July 20, 2026 beginner guide names Captain America, Ms. Marvel, and Wolverine as beginner-friendly examples; Iron Man and Spider-Man as relatively easy; and Storm and Danger as more advanced. These are onboarding suggestions, not a competitive ranking.
Recommended Free Tools
The same guide suggests pairing different ranges—for example, close-range Wolverine with ranged Iron Man—but recommends choosing characters you enjoy. There is no established strongest team or assist pairing in the official beginner material.
#1 Best Overall
- Assemble your team of legendary Marvel characters in the ultimate 4v4 tag team fighter from PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works and Marvel Games.
- Experiment with team compositions to discover new combos, synergies, and strategies. Blast your way through dynamic stages based on iconic Marvel Universe locales, some featuring interactive stage transitions.
- Fighting is both immersive and intuitive, with a range of unique move sets, combos, and strategies to master. Adjustable controls, both traditional and quick inputs, plus easy chain combos make diving right in a breeze.
- Face off against a friend locally or join the fray with up to 64 players in the online lobby, including standard VS modes. Plus, dive deep on each team with the single player Episode Mode to learn more about team dynamics and lore.
Use Startup Battle to learn the essentials
Startup Battle is the clearest first stop. Its Basics section teaches individual-character actions, while Assemble introduces team actions. If you already know fighting-game fundamentals, you can begin with Assemble instead. Training Mode is another option when you want to learn at your own pace.
Try the three starter Link Attack strings
PlayStation’s guide gives these simple sequences as starting points:
- L → L → L → L: leads into a Skill and can trigger a Break, such as a stage transition.
- M → M → M: leads into a Super Skill.
- H → H → H: leads into an Ultimate Skill.
Once those inputs feel familiar, the guide suggests practicing L → M → H → Skill → Assemble Rush → Follow-up Attack. Treat it as a learning route, not a guaranteed optimal combo for every character or game update.
Learn basic guard and defensive actions
- Hold ← to guard standing attacks.
- Hold ↙ to crouch and guard.
- Press □ + × while not guarding for an Assemble Counter. Your character backsteps and counters automatically if struck during the maneuver.
- Press □ + × while guarding for a Crossover, which brings in a teammate to interrupt the opponent and create an opening.
Startup Battle covers both defensive team actions. Practice them there before trying to react to them in a busy match.
How assists and tags work
Press × to call an Assemble Assist. The direction you hold selects which teammate responds. To tag directly, hold a direction and press L2. You can also switch after calling an assist: press L2 while the brief “Switch?” prompt is visible.

| Action | Input | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Call an assist | × | Calls a teammate; direction selects who. |
| Call teammate two | × with neutral or → | Calls teammate two. |
| Call teammate three | × + ↓ | Calls teammate three. |
| Call teammate four | × + ← | Calls teammate four. |
| Switch directly | Direction + L2 | Switches to the selected teammate. |
| Switch after an assist | Press L2 while “Switch?” appears | Tags into the teammate who just assisted. |
PlayStation recommends getting comfortable with assists before direct switching. In Training Mode or a low-pressure match, call each teammate by direction, confirm who appears, then practice pressing L2 during the visible prompt. The official guide describes the prompt window as brief but does not specify its duration in frames.
Why only two teammates are available at the start
Although you select a four-character team, launch matches begin with the first two selected characters available. The other two become available after you trigger a qualifying Break or lose a round, according to the official FAQ, updated August 18, 2026.
A Break can result from certain attacks or throws, selected Skill attacks, or a successful light-route Link Attack near the screen edge. Depending on the situation, this can cause a stage transition or wall splat. The earlier developer interview describes the team concept, but the later FAQ is the relevant source for launch match access.
Quick Skills or Command Inputs?
Skills can be performed with a one-button Quick Skill input or with Command Inputs (motion inputs). Quick Skills are a sensible starting point while learning movement, defense, and when to attack. Command Inputs deal slightly more damage and generate more Skill Gauge, according to PlayStation’s beginner guide. You can remap the Quick Skill button in control settings.
Start with Quick Skills if motion inputs are getting in the way of recognizing openings. Add Command Inputs when you can execute them reliably and want their extra damage and gauge. The choice is about learning and execution, not a requirement to play effectively.

A practical practice sequence
- Pick one character. Use Ease of Use as a starting clue, then choose someone whose style or moves interest you.
- Complete Startup Battle. Work through Basics and Assemble, or go straight to Assemble if you already know the fundamentals.
- Practice the three Link Attack strings. Learn what each sequence leads into before trying the longer route.
- Work on guarding and defense. Alternate standing and crouching guard, then try Assemble Counter and Crossover in the situations each is designed for.
- Call each teammate by direction. Identify who responds to neutral/right, down, and left.
- Practice the switch prompt. Call an assist and press L2 only while “Switch?” is displayed.
- Experiment with breaks and team routes. Notice which attacks and edge situations bring additional teammates into the match.
Training Mode supports command-input, frame-data, and damage displays, scenario presets, bot settings, and recording and replaying a bot. It also supports local two-player training and online training through a Room Match, according to the official FAQ. Use these tools to understand what your character does; they do not establish that a particular route or team is optimal.

Choose a team without chasing a supposed “best” lineup
The official sources reviewed do not establish a strongest four-character team, current matchup rankings, or a top assist pairing. Build a first team around practical preferences instead:
- Range coverage: consider whether you want close-range pressure and ranged attacks represented. PlayStation’s example is Wolverine with Iron Man.
- Ease of use: use the in-game rating and beginner suggestions as orientation, not as a tier list.
- Interest and familiarity: liking a character gives you a reason to keep practicing them.
- Role: the official characters and combat guide describes character kits and ranges to help you decide who you want to lead with and whose assist you want to call.
Launch details that affect a first session
The official FAQ lists 20 playable launch characters: Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther, Hulk, Storm, Magik, Wolverine, Danger, Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel, Star-Lord, Peni Parker, Ghost Rider, Blade, Deadpool, Loki, Doctor Doom, Magneto, Green Goblin, and Carnage. It also lists Episode Mode, local Versus, Training Mode, All-Star Arena, Battle Guides, and Character Guides among the available content.
The FAQ says the game is available on PS5 and PC through Steam and Epic. Online play requires an internet connection and a platform account; PS5 online play requires PlayStation Plus, while PC online modes require a PlayStation account. PS5-compatible arcade sticks and leverless controllers are supported, and button inputs can be configured. A specialty controller is not required for the mechanics in this guide; PC players should check their own hardware compatibility.
