MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls Beginner’s Guide to Combat, Team Synergy, and Practice

The fastest way to start MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is to learn one lead character, basic attacks, Quick Skills, guarding, then assists before you worry about advanced team sequences. Every player selects four characters, but only the first two are available when a match begins. The remaining two enter after a qualifying stage transition or when a round is lost, so you can learn the game in layers instead of controlling the entire roster immediately.

This guide explains the opening match structure, essential controls, team-building decisions, Training Mode tools, offline options, online requirements, and optional hardware for PS5 and PC.

What kind of fighting game is MARVEL Tōkon?

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a four-character team fighter from Arc System Works. You choose a squad of four, but the battle does not start with all four active at once. Your first two selected characters form the opening pair; the third and fourth become available during the match under specific conditions. The design gives you the assist and switching depth of a team fighter while letting a new player concentrate on a familiar lead.

Game Director and Lead Battle Designer Kazutoshi Sekine described the intended accessibility this way: “This means you don’t have to master the whole roster to be effective, and in that sense, can approach the game like a more traditional fighter if you choose to.” Read the complete interview on PlayStation.Blog.

How the four-character opening works

Match moment Characters available What it means for a beginner
Round or match start Your first two selected characters Learn your lead’s movement, attacks, defense and one teammate assist without managing the entire team.
Qualifying stage break The third and fourth characters join the available team Certain attacks, throws, selected Skill attacks or a successful light-route Link Attack near the screen edge can trigger a transition or wall splat that brings in another character.
After losing a round The remaining characters unlock You gain access to the rest of your selected team even if you did not cause a stage transition.

The opening pair and the later unlock conditions are documented in the game’s official FAQ and the PlayStation game guide. A four-character selection therefore does not mean four characters are controllable from the first second.

Choose a lead character before building a team

Start with the character you genuinely want to control. The official beginner guide recommends trying characters and settling on one you like before building habits around that choice. Comfort with movement, attack timing and input style matters more at the beginning than a supposed ranking.

Use role descriptions carefully

No reviewed official source establishes a universally strongest beginner character, a current tier list or a best four-character team. The PlayStation.Blog hands-on preview from 2025 called Captain America a versatile all-rounder and an entry point, but that was a dated preview observation rather than a competitive ranking. Treat it as one possible starting idea, not a prescription.

Four questions for selecting teammates

  • Who do you want to control most? Put that character in the first slot so practice begins with the moves you are most motivated to repeat.
  • Which input style feels natural? Quick Skills use a single button, while Command Inputs use traditional motion inputs. You can begin with the simpler option and add motions later.
  • Which assist helps your lead? Look for a teammate call that creates an opening, covers an approach or extends a sequence you already understand.
  • Do you want to switch immediately? You can stay focused on your lead while learning, then add direct switching once assist timing feels reliable.

These are practical decision axes drawn from the documented control and assist systems, not official team classes. Build a team around what you can execute and understand, rather than trying to copy an unverified “best” composition.

Learn the attack options in the right order

Start with basic attacks and a short route

First learn how your lead moves, jumps, blocks and links basic attacks. Practice a short, repeatable attack sequence rather than an elaborate maximum-damage combo. The goal is to recognize when an attack connects, when the opponent blocks and where your character ends up afterward.

Add Quick Skills

Quick Skills are performed with a single button, making them the most accessible way to use a character’s special techniques while you are still learning movement and defense. Once the button timing is familiar, you can test where a Quick Skill fits into your short attack route or how it interacts with an assist.

Graduate to Command Inputs when useful

Command Inputs use traditional motion inputs. The official beginner guide says they provide slightly higher damage and generate more Skill Gauge than the corresponding Quick Skills. That difference gives experienced players a reason to learn motions, but it does not make them a prerequisite for understanding the game. Start with Quick Skills, then add a Command Input when you can perform the motion without losing track of blocking or spacing.

Essential defense and clash mechanics

Standing and crouching Guard

Standing Guard is performed by holding back. Crouching Guard is performed by holding down-back. Practice switching between the two while watching the opponent’s attack height. Confirm the exact button assignments in your selected control layout, because the game allows customization.

Assemble Counter and Crossover

Two defensive responses use Square + Cross, with the situation determining which one occurs:

Action Input condition Purpose
Assemble Counter Press Square + Cross while not guarding. A counter option to practice when you are challenging an opponent’s action without holding Guard.
Crossover Press Square + Cross while guarding. Calls a teammate to interrupt the opponent while you are defending.

The official guide specifically recommends practicing both in Startup Battle. Use that mode to learn the timing before trying to identify the option in a fast online match.

How assists and switching create team synergy

Call an Assemble Assist

Press Cross to call an Assemble Assist. Directional inputs select which teammate answers the call. Start by choosing one direction and one assist so you can build a consistent habit; adding every teammate at once makes it harder to tell which timing worked.

Switch directly when you are ready

Direction plus L2 switches characters. After an assist, a brief “Switch?” prompt appears, allowing a seamless switch with L2. The PlayStation beginner guide recommends becoming comfortable with assists before relying on direct switching. An assist lets your current character keep acting while a teammate contributes; a switch changes which character you control and therefore changes your movement, attacks and defensive responsibilities.

Unlocking later teammates during play

The third and fourth characters become available after documented transition conditions: landing certain attacks, throws or selected Skill attacks; causing a transition or wall splat with a successful light-route Link Attack near the screen edge; or losing a round. Because the entire team is not present immediately, do not design your opening plan around an assist that cannot yet be called. Learn what your first two characters can do, then adapt when the additional teammates enter.

Health and focus

The team shares a health bar. This supports a straightforward beginner plan: keep your attention on one lead character while learning how teammates support that character. You still need to understand when an assist is safe and when a switch exposes you, but you do not have to master four separate game plans before becoming effective.

A first-session learning sequence

Follow this order so each new mechanic builds on one you already recognize.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Run Startup Battle or a built-in guide. Learn the control layout, movement and basic attack buttons before attempting advanced inputs.
  2. Choose one lead. Try several characters briefly, then select the one whose movement and attacks you enjoy repeating.
  3. Practice a basic route. In Training Mode, connect a short attack sequence and observe where it ends when the opponent blocks.
  4. Add one Quick Skill. Test it after the route and from neutral movement. Note whether it is easy to confirm and whether it leaves you close enough to continue.
  5. Drill both Guards. Hold back for standing Guard and down-back for crouching Guard. Practice changing position as attacks vary in height.
  6. Test the two Square + Cross situations. Try Assemble Counter without guarding and Crossover while guarding, then repeat until the distinction is automatic.
  7. Call one assist. Press Cross, use a directional input to select a teammate and watch how the assist changes the opponent’s response.
  8. Add the assist-to-switch prompt. When “Switch?” appears after an assist, press L2 and observe the new character’s position and timing.
  9. Play local or offline matches. Apply the sequence against a human or bot before adding online latency and matchmaking pressure.

This progression is a practical way to use the documented modes and mechanics; it is not a claim that one combo or route is objectively optimal.

Use Training Mode as a laboratory

Training Mode is the central practice tool. The official FAQ lists command-input, frame-data and damage displays, scenario presets, bot settings, and record/replay tools. It also supports local two-player training.

What to practice first

  • Input recognition: Turn on the command-input display and check whether your motion or button press matches what you intended.
  • Damage awareness: Use the damage display to compare a basic route, a Quick Skill extension and a Command Input version without guessing.
  • Frame information: Use frame data to see when an attack starts, when it can be blocked and how long recovery lasts. Apply the numbers to a specific situation rather than memorizing them in isolation.
  • Scenario repetition: Select a preset that recreates the spacing or defensive situation you want to solve, then repeat it until the response is consistent.
  • Bot recording: Record and replay a bot action to practice blocking, interrupting, punishing or switching under a repeatable condition.

A practical Training Mode drill

  1. Set the bot to block so you can tell whether your attack route is safe or simply works because the opponent is idle.
  2. Record a basic approach or attack and replay it while practicing standing and crouching Guard.
  3. Turn on frame data and damage displays, then perform your short route with a Quick Skill.
  4. Repeat the same route after calling one assist. Observe whether the assist creates more time, changes spacing or leaves you vulnerable.
  5. Record the opponent responding to your assist, then practice the L2 switch prompt and a defensive response after the switch.
  6. Reset the scenario and perform the sequence from both sides of the screen so directional inputs do not work only on one side.

Training Mode can answer a concrete question—“Can I block this?”, “Does this assist reach?”, or “What happens after I switch?”—more reliably than repeatedly entering matches without a plan.

Offline modes and when to play online

Offline content

The official FAQ lists Episode Mode, local Versus, Training Mode, All-Star Arena, Battle Guides and Character Guides as offline content. Arcadia Rumble is also playable offline, with optional online features. These modes let you learn controls and team interactions without an online subscription.

Online requirements

Online lobbies, private-room matches, ranked matches and casual online matches require an internet connection and an account. On PS5, online play requires PlayStation Plus. On PC, online play requires a PlayStation account and internet access. The requirements and mode list are detailed in the official FAQ.

Play local Versus or offline modes first if you are still losing track of Guard, assist selection or the switch prompt. Online matches are more useful once you can identify your own mistake: missed input, unsafe attack, late assist, failed block or poor spacing.

Common beginner mistakes and fixes

Trying to control all four characters immediately

Symptom: You forget your lead’s buttons while switching constantly. Fix: Keep the first two characters as your learning focus. Add the third and fourth only after you understand when stage breaks or round losses make them available.

Using Command Inputs before defense is reliable

Symptom: A motion-input attempt leaves you open or causes you to stop blocking. Fix: Use the single-button Quick Skill while learning movement and Guard. Reintroduce the motion after the route and defensive response are stable.

Calling assists without a purpose

Symptom: The teammate appears, but you cannot tell whether the call helped. Fix: Pick one assist and define its job—cover an approach, extend a route or create time to switch. Test that specific job in Training Mode with the bot set to block or replay an attack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring attack height

Symptom: You hold one Guard direction and get opened by a different-height attack. Fix: Drill standing Guard with back and crouching Guard with down-back, then use a recorded bot sequence to practice changing between them.

Entering ranked play without a repeatable answer

Symptom: Every loss feels different, so practice has no target. Fix: Stay in local or offline modes until you can name the problem—missed input, failed Guard, unsafe route, late assist or poor switch timing—and reproduce it in Training Mode.
