Vanguard, Duelist and Strategist are Marvel Rivals’ three official hero categories. Treat them as a first clue about the team contribution a hero is intended to make, not as a complete description of how every hero must be played. A Vanguard may be the team’s point of pressure, a Duelist may convert opportunities into damage, and a Strategist may create sustain, information or utility. The actual answer comes from the selected hero’s current abilities, statistics and team-up options, which the official hero directory lists for each character.
This distinction matters because balance updates can change both individual kits and role-wide systems. For example, the October 6, 2026 balance notes list Devil Dinosaur as a Vanguard, Cyclops as a Duelist and Adam Warlock as a Strategist while detailing ability adjustments. A September 8, 2026 update also changed Strategist healing-to-energy and damage-to-energy conversions. Use the role label to narrow your search, then read the live hero page and current patch notes before deciding how that hero fits your team.

What the three Marvel Rivals roles mean
The labels describe categories in the official hero directory and balance notes. They are not formal promises that every hero in a category has the same weapon range, defensive power, mobility or rotation. Two heroes with the same label can create value in very different ways because their abilities and base statistics differ.

|---|---|---|---|
| Vanguard | Who can contest space or absorb pressure while the team acts? | Holding an approach, starting or stabilizing a fight, protecting access to an objective, or forcing opponents to respond. | A fixed amount of health, a shield, a melee-only kit, or permission to stand alone without support. |
| Duelist | Who can turn an opening into meaningful damage or a pick? | Applying focused pressure, finishing weakened targets, threatening angles and punishing exposed opponents. | A requirement to ignore objectives, a universal damage profile, or the same ideal range and mobility on every hero. |
| Strategist | Who helps the team keep acting effectively and makes fights easier to read or sustain? | Healing, enabling allies, controlling information or tempo, and using utility that changes the conditions of an engagement. | A guarantee of constant healing, low personal damage, or an identical resource system across the role. |
These descriptions are useful play interpretations, not quotations from an official role-definition page. The official material establishes the category headings and supplies each hero’s abilities, base statistics and team-up abilities. Read the kit when a decision depends on a specific mechanic.

Vanguard: choosing the hero that makes space usable
What a Vanguard contributes
A Vanguard’s practical job is to make an area, route or objective safer for teammates to use. That can mean contesting a location, standing between an opponent and a vulnerable ally, interrupting an advance, or creating enough threat that enemies cannot comfortably aim at your back line. The important measure is not simply how much punishment the hero can take. It is whether the hero’s current kit lets the team occupy a useful position or begin a fight on favorable terms.
Questions to ask on the hero page
- Which abilities let the hero enter, hold or leave contested space?
- Can the hero protect a teammate, deny a route or force opponents to reposition?
- What resources, cooldowns or conditions limit repeated engagements?
- Does the hero’s range and mobility suit the map and objective you are playing?
Do not infer answers from the word Vanguard alone. The official directory exposes the ability descriptions and base statistics needed to answer them. A Vanguard can be durable yet still lose value if it enters without a retreat path, while a less obvious space-maker may be excellent when its utility matches the map.
Current example: Devil Dinosaur
The October 6, 2026 balance post places Devil Dinosaur in the Vanguard section and describes changes to the hero’s abilities. That dated classification is a concrete example of how to read patch notes: the category tells you where the game groups the hero, while the listed adjustments tell you what to verify before relying on an older guide. Treat the October notes as a snapshot of the game at that time, not a permanent statement about the hero’s power.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Duelist: converting openings into pressure
What a Duelist contributes
A Duelist’s practical contribution is threat that opponents must respect. The hero may pressure a target from an angle, punish an exposed player, finish a low-health enemy or make an area too dangerous to cross. The role is about converting opportunities into results, not about chasing eliminations regardless of the objective. A Duelist creates more value when its damage changes what the opposing team can safely do.
How to evaluate a Duelist kit
- Identify the distance and angle from which the hero applies reliable pressure.
- Check how the abilities start, extend or end an engagement.
- Look for conditions that improve damage, mobility or survivability, and note the cooldowns that gate them.
- Decide what the hero can do after securing an advantage: continue pressure, retreat, or help capture space.
A role label does not tell you whether a Duelist is a flanker, a front-line brawler, a ranged threat or a specialist in finishing damage. Those conclusions require the current ability text and statistics. Build your plan around what the named hero can repeat in the present patch rather than around a generic damage-dealer stereotype.

Current example: Cyclops
Cyclops appears under Duelist in the October 6, 2026 balance post, which also records ability changes. If you learned the hero before that update, compare the live directory with the dated notes before copying an old combo or timing. The example illustrates why role explanations should remain flexible: the category stays useful for team planning, but tuning can alter the practical way a Duelist creates pressure.
Strategist: sustaining decisions, tempo and information
What a Strategist contributes
Strategists help the team maintain effective actions or improve the conditions in which a fight happens. Healing is one possible expression, but the category should not be reduced to a single healing assignment. Utility, enabling effects, timing tools and information can all matter because they preserve an ally’s ability to contest space or make an opponent’s plan harder to execute.
How to inspect a Strategist
- Separate direct healing from other forms of protection, enablement or control.
- Check whether value depends on line of sight, range, positioning, a resource meter or a cooldown.
- Identify what the hero does while no ally needs immediate healing.
- Note how the kit rewards coordinated timing, because a strong effect used after a fight has already been lost may provide little value.
The September 8, 2026 balance post demonstrates that even role-wide systems can change. It records Strategist healing-to-energy conversion changing from 70% to 65% and damage-to-energy conversion changing from 55% to 50%. These are game-mechanic values, not evidence that Strategists win more often or outperform another role. They show why a resource loop learned from an older season may no longer be accurate.
Current example: Adam Warlock
Adam Warlock is listed in the Strategist section of the October 6, 2026 balance post, alongside adjustments to his abilities. Use that entry as a date-stamped example rather than assuming every Strategist shares his resource behavior, timing or effective range. Open Adam Warlock’s current directory page, read the ability text and then check notes published after October 6, 2026 for any later changes.
Vanguard vs. Duelist vs. Strategist: a practical comparison
When selecting a hero, compare the contribution you need at that moment instead of asking which label is strongest in the abstract.

| If your team is struggling with… | Start by examining… | Why this may help | What to verify before locking in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reaching or holding an objective | A Vanguard or another hero whose kit can contest space | More reliable access to the area can give teammates time to act. | Entry tools, escape options, defensive cooldowns and map geometry. |
| Enemies surviving with low health or controlling open angles | A Duelist with the range or mobility to pressure those targets | Focused threat can force retreats or turn a small opening into a decisive advantage. | Damage conditions, sightlines, reload or resource limits and post-fight safety. |
| Allies losing effectiveness before the fight is decided | A Strategist with relevant sustain or utility | Healing, enablement or control can keep a teammate active and improve timing. | Coverage, line of sight, cooldown cycle and what the hero contributes between emergencies. |
| A specific map, mode or opponent strategy | The individual kit that answers that problem, regardless of label | Role categories narrow the search, but a specialized ability may be the real solution. | Whether the ability works under the mode’s win condition and current patch rules. |
This is a decision framework, not a universal composition. The official hero and balance materials categorize characters and describe mechanics, but they do not prescribe one fixed team for every mode. A lineup that works on one objective or with one group of players may be a poor fit elsewhere.
Why role labels do not determine a fixed playstyle
One category can contain different kits
The category is a classification layer. It does not encode every detail a player needs: weapon range, movement, survivability, target priority, ultimate timing, resource management and team-up interactions remain hero-specific. That is why the official directory presents individual abilities and statistics rather than asking players to infer a complete strategy from the role heading.
Patch tuning changes practical priorities
Balance notes can adjust a single ability, several interactions or a role-wide conversion. The September Strategist changes and the October examples for Devil Dinosaur, Cyclops and Adam Warlock show all three reasons to re-check assumptions. A guide written before those dates may still explain a concept, but its timings, resource expectations or preferred engagements can be stale.
Mode and map change the value of a contribution
Space control matters differently on a narrow approach than on an open objective. A damage angle that is safe on one map can be exposed on another. A sustain effect can be decisive during a long contest but less useful when a team must disengage quickly. Select the role contribution that answers the current win condition, then choose the hero whose kit can deliver it.
How to choose a hero step by step
- Name the immediate team problem. Decide whether the issue is access to space, pressure on targets, or sustaining and enabling teammates. If the problem is map-specific, describe the route, objective or sightline rather than using a role word.
- Use the role heading as a filter. Open the official hero directory and inspect Vanguards, Duelists or Strategists that plausibly address the problem. Do not treat the filter as a complete recommendation.
- Read the full current kit. Review abilities, base statistics and team-up abilities for each candidate. Record the range, conditions, cooldowns, resource costs and defensive options that matter to your plan.
- Match the kit to the map and mode. Ask where the hero will stand, how it reaches the objective, and what happens when the first engagement ends. Reject a theoretical strength that cannot be used safely in the actual layout.
- Check the latest balance notes. Look for changes to the named hero and any global rules affecting its role. Give special attention to resource conversions, cooldowns and ability conditions because those can invalidate an older rotation.
- Define one repeatable job. For your first matches, choose a concrete task such as holding an entrance until an ally arrives, pressuring a visible target from a safe angle, or maintaining a sustain cycle through a contest. A clear job makes it easier to tell whether the hero is helping.
- Review outcomes by team value. After a fight, ask whether your position opened space, removed a threat or kept an ally effective. Elimination totals alone cannot establish whether a role or hero is stronger, and no named population-level role-performance statistic is established here.
How to read current patch notes without losing the bigger picture
Separate category changes from hero changes
Patch notes often group entries under Vanguard, Duelist and Strategist headings. First record the category assignment, then read the individual ability adjustment. A role heading helps you find relevant material; it does not mean every hero in that heading received the same change.

Keep dates attached to numbers
The 70% to 65% healing-to-energy and 55% to 50% damage-to-energy changes belong to the September 8, 2026 Strategist update. The Devil Dinosaur, Cyclops and Adam Warlock examples belong to the October 6, 2026 balance post. Treat each value as a dated game rule and check for a later note before using it in a build, rotation or coaching explanation.
Account for the current season boundary
Official patch notes state that Season 10.5 began on October 9, 2026 at 09:00 UTC. That date is useful when deciding whether a guide matches the live season. Event or mode details can expire, so include them in a plan only when they are relevant to the decision you are making and still appear in the current official information.
Common mistakes when comparing the roles
Assuming a Vanguard must always lead
Leading every engagement can waste defensive resources or expose the team. Evaluate the hero’s actual entry, protection and retreat tools, then choose the moment that creates the most usable space.
Measuring a Duelist only by eliminations
Pressure that forces an enemy away from an objective or breaks a safe angle can be valuable even without a final blow. Judge whether the threat changed the opponent’s options and helped your team complete its objective.

Best Value
Copying an old universal composition
No reviewed official source establishes one fixed composition for every mode. Team needs, map geometry, player familiarity and current tuning all matter. Use categories to discuss coverage, not to force identical lineups.
Using role percentages as performance rankings
The conversion percentages in the September update describe mechanics. They do not show win rate, pick rate or superiority. Avoid turning a balance number into a claim about which role is best.
A compact decision checklist
- What must the team accomplish in the next fight: occupy, pressure or sustain?
- Which current hero ability directly supports that task?
- What range, resource, cooldown or positioning condition limits the plan?
- Can the hero contribute after the first ability cycle ends?
- Does the map or mode reward this kind of value?
- Did a recent balance note change the hero or its role-wide mechanics?
- Can your teammates recognize and use the opening your hero creates?
Keeping your understanding current
Use the official hero directory as the source of truth for a named hero’s role, abilities, base statistics and team-up abilities. Then read the newest balance posts for changes that may alter resource loops, timings or interactions. Recheck after each seasonal update, because a correct explanation can become incomplete when the game changes.
As of the October 9, 2026 Season 10.5 start, the safest interpretation remains straightforward: Vanguard, Duelist and Strategist are useful category labels, while the live kit determines the practical job. Choose the contribution your team needs, verify that the hero’s current abilities can provide it, and keep dated patch changes attached to any mechanic you explain.
