Marvel Rivals Hero Roles Explained: Duelist, Vanguard, and Strategist

Duelist, Vanguard, and Strategist are Marvel Rivals’ three official hero classes. In practical terms, Duelists usually pressure enemies with damage, Vanguards contest dangerous frontline space, and Strategists keep a team effective with healing, protection, information, or other utility. Those descriptions are useful shorthand—not complete rulebooks. The role label is a starting point; a hero’s abilities, cooldowns, range, mobility, and team interactions determine how that character actually plays.

What the three roles mean

Marvel Rivals uses three class labels: Duelist, Vanguard, and Strategist. The developer does not present them as rigid jobs with identical requirements for every hero. Class assignment is part of adapting a character’s lore, personality, mechanics, abilities, and style into a playable kit.

That distinction matters because two heroes in the same class can make very different decisions. One Duelist may depend on precise ranged shots while another wins through close-range bursts and mobility. One Vanguard may create a safe path into an objective, while another is better at disrupting enemies already occupying it. Strategists can heal, but support can also mean damage amplification, crowd control, rescue tools, scouting, or space-making.

Class Practical shorthand What the label does not guarantee
Duelist Often emphasizes dealing damage and creating eliminations. Every Duelist is not a pure sniper, assassin, or solo carry.
Vanguard Often emphasizes frontline presence, durability, and contesting space. Every Vanguard does not have the same defenses, range, or initiation tools.
Strategist Often emphasizes healing, protection, information, or other team utility. Every Strategist is not limited to passive healing or backline play.

Use the class to form an initial plan, then read the hero’s current ability descriptions before deciding how to position, which fights to take, and what your team needs.

How Marvel Rivals chooses a hero’s class

In a May 5, 2024 developer design article, the team described finding each character’s fit among Vanguard, Duelist, and Strategist while combining abilities, personality, detailed mechanics, and style. The stated approach is about expressing a character’s identity in gameplay, not sorting heroes into perfectly interchangeable jobs.

Loki is a useful illustration of that philosophy. The design discussion presents him as a trickster built around illusions, surprise switches, vanishing from the battlefield, and shapeshifting, with tools intended to help allies and outsmart opponents. That is a dated design example, so it explains the intended character fantasy rather than guaranteeing that every current value or interaction remains unchanged.

Duelist: damage pressure and finishing power

What Duelists usually do

Duelists generally convert opportunities into enemy health loss. They may open an engagement, punish an exposed target, win a flank, or finish an opponent who has already been weakened. Their value is often measured by pressure: forcing enemies to retreat, spend defensive cooldowns, abandon an angle, or give up objective space.

Damage is the common thread, but the method varies. A ranged Duelist may control sightlines and punish predictable movement. A close-range Duelist may need to enter briefly, combine abilities, and leave before the enemy counterattacks. A mobile Duelist can create threats from unusual angles, while a less mobile one may rely on disciplined positioning and team protection.

Black Widow as a concrete example

The official hero material labels Black Widow as a Duelist and lists a sniper rifle alongside close-range shock batons. Those tools show why the class label alone is insufficient: the same hero can threaten from distance and still have a close-range option when an opponent reaches her position.

  • At range: use clear sightlines, cover, and patience rather than exposing yourself for a low-value shot.
  • During a collapse: switch to the tools that help you survive close pressure instead of assuming a Duelist must always stay far away.
  • For the team: communicate which enemy is vulnerable so your damage creates an actual elimination or forces a retreat.

Common Duelist mistakes

  • Chasing damage numbers while ignoring the objective or a teammate being attacked.
  • Taking an isolated duel without an exit route or information about enemy cooldowns.
  • Using a mobility or burst ability to enter, then having no tool left to disengage.
  • Assuming a high-damage hero can replace frontline presence or team support.

A strong Duelist chooses targets and timing, not just aim. If the enemy team is grouped behind defensive tools, waiting for a Vanguard’s engagement or a Strategist’s utility can produce more value than forcing an early attack.

Vanguard: frontline space and contested objectives

What Vanguards usually do

Vanguards tend to operate where the fight is most contested. They occupy entrances, stand on objectives, create room for teammates, and make it costly for opponents to advance. Their job is not simply to absorb damage. A Vanguard creates a position from which the rest of the team can act.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Depending on the hero, that may involve barriers, personal durability, displacement, area denial, crowd control, or an initiation that forces enemies to react. Some Vanguards are strongest when leading a push; others are better at holding a chokepoint or interrupting an enemy’s advance.

How to play the frontline effectively

  1. Choose a contestable position. Stand where your presence affects the objective, a choke, or an important route—not in open ground with no cover.
  2. Check your escape path. Before committing, identify where you can retreat and which teammate can help you.
  3. Spend defensive tools for a purpose. Use them to cross dangerous space, protect an ally, deny an enemy ultimate, or survive a timed engagement.
  4. Signal the moment of commitment. Your team needs to know when you are creating an opening so Duelists can follow and Strategists can support.
  5. Leave before the position becomes unwinnable. Contesting space is valuable; donating an elimination after your resources are gone is not.

Why Vanguards are not interchangeable tanks

The word “frontline” describes where a hero influences the fight, not a single mechanical formula. A Vanguard with strong defensive coverage may protect a team while advancing. Another may rely on mobility and disruption instead of a large barrier. A third may be excellent at holding a location but poor at chasing targets into open space.

Read the ability descriptions for duration, range, cooldown, and conditions. Those details determine whether you should anchor a position, start a dive, peel for a teammate, or wait for an enemy mistake.

Strategist: keeping the team functional

Support is broader than healing

Strategists usually provide the tools that let teammates stay in the fight or make better decisions. Healing is one form of support, but protection, cleansing, buffs, debuffs, crowd control, rescue effects, scouting, and area denial can be equally important. A Strategist may contribute damage while still playing a support-oriented role.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The key question is not “How much healing did I produce?” It is “Which teammate can now survive, reach the objective, or win an engagement because of my actions?” Saving a Vanguard during a retreat, enabling a Duelist to take a favorable angle, or denying an enemy’s push can be more valuable than topping off a teammate who is already safe.

Adam Warlock as an example

Official hero material identifies Adam Warlock as a Strategist and describes healing and team-oriented abilities. That makes him a clear example of the class’s support emphasis, while also demonstrating why players should inspect the full kit: the timing, targeting rules, range, and cooldowns determine whether an ability is best used proactively, reactively, or to stabilize a retreat.

Strategist positioning and priorities

  • Stay close enough to affect teammates, but use cover so you are not the easiest target.
  • Track which allies are about to enter danger instead of reacting only after health is already lost.
  • Preserve a rescue or defensive cooldown for the enemy’s most threatening commitment when possible.
  • Use utility to create a safe window for your team, not only to repair damage afterward.
  • When the team is healthy and stable, contribute pressure or information rather than waiting passively.

A Strategist who dies first can remove the team’s sustain and utility at the same time. Survival is therefore an active responsibility, not an excuse to stand far away from the fight.

How to choose which role to play

Start with the team’s missing function

In an organized team, ask what the current lineup cannot do. If no one can contest space, a Vanguard may solve the immediate problem. If the team cannot threaten an exposed enemy, a Duelist may be needed. If allies repeatedly lose fights after taking damage or lack a way to stabilize, a Strategist can provide the missing support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a functional decision, not a demand that every match contain an exact quota. A flexible hero can cover more than one need, and a confident player may create more value on a familiar class than on an unfamiliar pick chosen to complete a theoretical composition.

Match the role to your preferred decisions

If you enjoy… Start by testing… Questions to ask during a match
Finding openings, aiming, and finishing targets Duelist Which target is vulnerable, and can I enter and leave safely?
Leading contests and controlling dangerous space Vanguard Where does my presence let teammates act, and when should I disengage?
Enabling allies and managing fight resources Strategist Who needs help now, and which utility will matter in the next exchange?

Test the kit, not just the class icon

Before committing to a hero, read every ability and note its range, target rules, resource cost, cooldown, and likely failure condition. Ask whether the hero’s movement and defensive options fit your connection, aim, reaction speed, and preferred distance. The class tells you the broad identity; the kit tells you the actual workload.

Why role labels cannot predict every match

Team fights are shared systems. A Duelist may need a Vanguard’s space to reach a target. A Vanguard may need a Strategist’s protection to hold a position. A Strategist may need a Duelist to remove the enemy who is pressuring the backline. Treating classes as isolated lanes creates predictable weaknesses.

Role boundaries also blur during a fight. A Strategist may damage an enemy to force them away. A Duelist may peel for a teammate instead of chasing a kill. A Vanguard may temporarily leave the objective to interrupt an enemy threat. These actions do not contradict the class; they show that the class describes a hero’s primary design emphasis rather than a prohibition on other actions.

Balance patches can change how a role feels

Ability values and interactions are not permanent. The newest official balance item identified here is the Version 20261009 Balance Post, published October 6, 2026. It groups adjustments under Vanguard, Duelist, and Strategist headings and includes changes involving Devil Dinosaur, Cyclops, and Adam Warlock.

That dated example is why guides should not present old damage, healing, cooldown, or ultimate values as current facts. When a patch changes a hero, revisit the live hero information and patch notes before copying an old combo or judging whether a class is strong. A role’s broad purpose may remain recognizable while the best timing, range, or matchup changes substantially.

Ultimate energy and role expectations

A March 17, 2026 balance post from the developers states that around 80% of Ultimate Ability Energy comes from damage or healing conversion. This is a statement about how ultimate energy is generated; it is not a statistic about role popularity, role balance, or match outcomes.

The practical implication is that active contribution matters. Duelists commonly generate conversion through damage, Strategists can contribute through healing as well as other actions, and Vanguards may need to balance damage, protection, and sustained presence according to their kit. Do not treat the figure as a promise that every hero or every match will produce the same charge rate. It is a developer-published game-data statement tied to that balance discussion.

A quick method for learning any new hero

  1. Confirm the class. Use it as your first hypothesis about the hero’s intended contribution.
  2. List the primary ways the kit creates value. Separate damage, protection, healing, mobility, control, information, and objective pressure.
  3. Identify the commitment tools. Know which ability starts an engagement and which one helps you escape or recover.
  4. Find the safest useful position. Choose a range and angle that let you affect the fight without exposing yourself unnecessarily.
  5. Watch the enemy response. Note which cooldowns stop your plan and which targets become vulnerable after those tools are used.
  6. Review one failure at a time. Decide whether the problem was target choice, timing, positioning, resource use, or a mismatch between the hero and the team’s plan.
  7. Check the latest patch information. If a value or interaction is important, verify it against the current official notes rather than relying on an undated guide.

Common questions about Marvel Rivals roles

Are Duelists the only heroes who should deal damage?

No. Duelists usually emphasize damage, but Vanguards and Strategists can also deal damage when their kits and the situation call for it. The distinction is the hero’s primary design emphasis and team function.

Does Vanguard always mean the highest health?

No universal health, armor, or durability rule is established by the class name alone. Check the individual hero’s abilities and current values.

Must Strategists stay behind the team?

No. They generally need a safe position from which to support allies, but that can require moving with the frontline, contesting space briefly, or using utility in the middle of a fight.

Can one hero perform more than one role?

A hero has one official class label, but the kit can perform several functions. A Duelist can peel, a Vanguard can disrupt, and a Strategist can pressure enemies while still serving the class’s main purpose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where should I verify current ability details?

Use the current official hero information and the latest official balance notes. The October 6, 2026 Version 20261009 Balance Post illustrates how quickly specific values and interactions can change.

The practical takeaway

Choose Duelist when your team needs reliable threat and finishing pressure, Vanguard when it needs someone to contest and shape dangerous space, and Strategist when survival, protection, or utility is the missing link. Then move beyond the label: study the hero’s abilities, coordinate the timing of your contribution, and verify patch-sensitive details against current official information.
