If Marvel Rivals began dropping frames or stuttering after an update, start with reversible checks rather than assuming the patch is broken. Record your hardware, Windows and driver versions, game build, graphics settings, and the exact moment the problem appears. Then perform the official clean GPU-driver installation and assign Marvel.exe to Windows’ high-performance graphics mode, reduce rendering load one setting at a time, and test the launcher’s shader-compilation option if memory pressure is plausible. Persistent problems should be documented with the publisher’s diagnostic tool and sent to support.
First determine whether this is an FPS problem
“Stuttering” can describe several different symptoms. A low or unstable frame rate is a rendering problem: the game cannot produce frames quickly enough. Network delay is different. A high latency indicator can make heroes appear to teleport or actions arrive late, but it does not by itself prove that the PC’s measured FPS has fallen.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- FPS issue: the frame counter falls, camera motion looks uneven, or the game feels slow even when latency is normal.
- Latency issue: the FPS counter remains near its usual value while the in-game latency indicator rises, players warp, or hits register late.
- Mixed issue: both FPS and latency change, possibly because a busy scene is stressing the PC while the connection is also unstable.
Compare the FPS counter and the game’s latency indicator in the same scene. Write down whether the problem occurs in menus, the practice area, every match, only large fights, or only during the first match after launching. This distinction determines which fix to try first.

- CPU model and number of CPU threads
- GPU model and graphics-driver version
- Installed RAM and approximate memory use while Marvel Rivals is running
- Windows edition and version
- Steam or other supported PC platform, plus the current game version or build number
- Every graphics option that is currently changed from its default, including upscaling and frame generation
- GPU and CPU utilization, temperatures, and clock speeds during a repeatable scene
- The date of the game update, the date of the GPU-driver update, and the date you changed any graphics setting
This timeline matters. A symptom that starts immediately after a game update has a different lead than one that starts after a driver installation, Windows update, new background software, or a hardware change. The official material reviewed for Marvel Rivals does not confirm a current, widespread patch-specific regression, so treat timing as a clue rather than proof that the update is solely responsible.
Take a screenshot or write down the values before making a change. Use the same resolution, map or practice location, and camera movement for each comparison. If the hitch happens only once, such as on the first visit to a location, record that separately from a repeatable drop every few seconds. This prevents a normal one-time compilation event from being confused with a continuing frame-time problem.
Check whether your PC meets the published minimum
Marvel Rivals’ Common Technical Issues FAQ lists these minimum PC requirements. They are publisher specifications, not a guarantee of a smooth or fixed frame rate in every map, fight, resolution, or graphics preset.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Component | Published minimum | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit, version 1909 or later | Confirm the installed Windows version before troubleshooting game settings. |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM | Check available memory while the game, browser tabs, overlays, and other applications are open. |
| Graphics card | NVIDIA GTX 1060, AMD RX 580, or Intel Arc A380 | These are the listed minimum examples; a different card must be judged by its actual performance and driver support. |
| Graphics API | DirectX 12 | Keep Windows and the GPU driver capable of running the required API. |
| Storage | 70 GB available space | Leave enough free space for the installation and updates; the figure is a capacity requirement, not an FPS target. |
Meeting the minimum does not mean every high-resolution or high-quality setting is appropriate. Conversely, exceeding it does not rule out driver corruption, memory exhaustion, shader compilation, thermal throttling, or a game-side defect.
The 16 GB figure is especially relevant when several applications are open. Check memory while Marvel Rivals is actually stuttering, not only at the desktop. A machine with 16 GB installed can have much less available to the game after Windows, a browser, capture software, and overlays are loaded. That observation does not prove memory shortage, but it tells you whether the launcher’s experimental shader option is worth testing.
Apply the official driver and Windows graphics steps
The Common Technical Issues FAQ says that systems meeting the requirements but still stuttering should first use a clean installation of the latest GPU driver for the installed graphics-card model, then assign the game to high-performance graphics in Windows.
1. Reinstall the latest driver cleanly
- Identify the exact GPU model in Windows’ Task Manager, Device Manager, or the graphics vendor’s control panel.
- Download the current driver intended for that model and your Windows edition from the GPU manufacturer.
- Run the installer and choose its clean installation option when offered. The label differs between vendors, but it generally removes or resets existing driver profiles before installing the selected package.
- Restart Windows after the installation, even if the installer does not insist on a restart.
- Launch Marvel Rivals with the same graphics settings used for the baseline test and compare an equivalent scene.
A clean installation is preferable to repeatedly layering new packages over a damaged profile. It can reset custom driver overrides, so recheck any global frame limiter, synchronization mode, or per-game profile afterward.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
2. Assign Marvel Rivals to the high-performance GPU
- Open Settings in Windows.
- Go to System → Display → Graphics. The exact wording can vary by Windows release.
- Use Browse to add the game executable, usually
Marvel.exein the game’s installation directory. - Select the added entry, choose Options, select High performance, and save.
- Restart the game and verify in Task Manager or the GPU utility that the intended discrete GPU is being used.
On a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics, this setting prevents Windows from choosing the lower-power adapter. If only one GPU is present, the option can still be saved but will not create additional hardware capability.
Do these two steps in sequence and test after each one. If the clean driver installation changes the symptom but the high-performance assignment does not, preserve that result in your notes. If neither changes anything, that is also useful evidence for support; do not keep reinstalling the same package without recording the outcome.
Reduce rendering load without losing the cause
The release FAQ specifically suggests lowering settings such as texture quality even when a device is above the minimum requirements. Do not change every option at once: you will not know which change helped, and restoring a preferred image quality later becomes guesswork.
Use a controlled test
- Choose a repeatable location, such as the practice area or a similar match situation. Record average FPS and the worst-looking hitch.
- Change one setting, beginning with texture quality or another option that is consuming substantial video memory.
- Apply the change, restart the match if necessary, and repeat the same movement or camera sweep.
- Keep the setting only if the frame-time behavior improves without introducing an unacceptable visual problem.
- Record the result before changing the next option.
Large drops when turning the camera or entering a crowded fight point toward rendering or asset-streaming pressure. A steady low frame rate everywhere suggests that the selected resolution, quality preset, or hardware capability is too demanding. Sudden pauses followed by recovery are more consistent with compilation, memory pressure, background activity, or a driver event than with a simple quality preset being too high.

Check utilization and temperature
- If GPU utilization is near its limit and temperature or clock speed is unstable, reduce resolution or GPU-heavy quality options and check for thermal throttling.
- If one or more CPU threads are saturated while the GPU is underused, lower CPU-heavy effects, close unnecessary background programs, and check whether the scene is unusually crowded.
- If system memory or video memory is nearly full, close browsers, recording tools, overlays, and other large applications before retesting.
- If neither processor is busy but frame times spike, investigate shader compilation, driver errors, storage activity, or another process interrupting the game.
These observations are diagnostic questions, not proof of a particular fault. Do not purchase a GPU, additional RAM, an SSD, or cooling equipment solely because an update was installed. The appropriate remedy depends on the measured bottleneck.
Texture quality is a sensible first experiment because it can affect video-memory demand, but it is not a universal answer. If lowering it has no effect while GPU utilization remains low, restore it and test another single option rather than leaving image quality reduced indefinitely. Keep a note of the exact value that produced each result, including whether the change affected only the first match or all subsequent matches.
Test the launcher’s shader-compilation mode when memory pressure is plausible
NetEase introduced Switch Shader Compilation Mode as an experimental launcher feature. The publisher says shader compilation occurs when the game is first entered after a new game version or graphics-driver update. It describes the alternate mode as a way to reduce game memory consumption and severe FPS drops, frozen visuals, and crashes associated with memory shortage. NetEase particularly suggested considering it for players with 16 GB RAM or less who experience those symptoms.

- Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
Before enabling it
- Confirm that the option is still present in the current Marvel Rivals launcher; an experimental feature can be moved or removed in a later version.
- Note whether the problem is worst on the first entry after an update or driver change. That timing makes shader work a more plausible suspect than a permanent frame-rate limit.
- Keep a record of your current setting so you can return to it if the experiment is worse.
Understand the documented trade-offs
NetEase warns that the first rendering of some materials in a new match may briefly look abnormal or stutter before stabilizing. That initial hitch is not evidence that the mode failed. Allow the same scene to settle before judging it, then compare later matches rather than only the first few seconds.
There is also a specific compatibility warning: systems with six or fewer CPU threads may stutter more when Switch Shader Compilation Mode and AMD FSR3 Frame Generation are enabled together. If that describes your PC, test one feature disabled at a time. First disable frame generation and compare; if the result is worse, restore it and test the shader mode off instead. This isolates the interaction without assuming either feature is universally harmful.
The publisher does not promise a guaranteed FPS increase. The useful outcome may instead be fewer severe pauses, frozen frames, or crashes caused by memory shortage.
Because this mode changes how work is handled rather than simply lowering image quality, compare both the first and later matches. A brief abnormal material or hitch during initial rendering can be an expected trade-off. Judge whether repeated matches remain smoother, whether freezes stop, and whether total memory use changes. If the result is worse, switch back and report that comparison rather than treating the option as a permanent requirement.
Separate an update regression from local configuration problems
Use your timeline and comparisons to narrow the cause:
| Observation | More useful next check |
|---|---|
| Only Marvel Rivals stutters; other games are normal | Compare the game build and driver dates, test the shader mode, and prepare the game diagnostic package. |
| Several games stutter after a driver update | Repeat the clean driver installation and inspect GPU temperature, clocks, and system-wide graphics settings. |
| FPS is normal but latency rises | Investigate the network path and in-game latency indicators rather than lowering graphics quality. |
| Stutter appears only on first entry after a new version or driver | Allow shader work to finish, then compare later matches; test the launcher shader mode if memory pressure is plausible. |
| Stutter occurs after changing a graphics option | Restore the previous value and reapply changes one at a time. |
| Low FPS is constant in every game and application | Check whether the intended GPU is active, whether temperatures are throttling performance, and whether the hardware is below the game’s practical needs. |
Player reports can reveal that others saw a similar symptom, but they do not establish that every system is affected or that an update is the sole cause. Look for a current official notice before describing a regression as confirmed.
Also compare the dates of the game build and graphics driver. A game update followed by a driver update can make the sequence ambiguous, especially if the first launch after each change triggers shader compilation. Reproduce the issue after each controlled change and preserve the build number in your notes. This gives support a useful timeline without claiming that one event caused the other.

Collect evidence with the official diagnostic tool
If the clean driver installation, high-performance assignment, controlled graphics reductions, and shader-mode test do not resolve the issue, use the diagnostic process in Marvel Rivals’ official guide.
- Close Marvel Rivals completely.
- Open the game’s installation directory.
- Run
client_diagnose.exe. - Select Analyze and wait for the tool to finish.
- Locate the generated file named in the form
diagnose_...zip. - Send that archive to Marvel Rivals support through the publisher’s Discord support channel, following the current submission instructions.
Include the platform, game version, GPU model and driver version, CPU and RAM, Windows version, graphics settings, whether shader mode or frame generation is enabled, when the problem began, whether it happens in other games, and every step already attempted. Attach a short description of what the FPS counter and latency indicator showed at the same time. The publisher also directs players with persistent slowdowns to its support bot.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not delete the archive before support confirms receipt. If the tool cannot run, state the error message and installation path in your report instead of repeatedly changing settings without a record.
A concise report is easier to act on than a list saying only “the update made it lag.” State the exact build, the driver date, the scene in which the hitch occurs, whether the frame counter changed, and whether the same behavior appears after later matches. Mention if you are at or below 16 GB RAM or have six or fewer CPU threads, since those details are relevant to the shader-mode guidance.

Stop experimenting and escalate when the symptom remains after a clean driver installation, high-performance GPU assignment, one-at-a-time graphics testing, and a documented shader-mode comparison. Repeatedly switching presets can erase the timeline that support needs. Keep the last known-good configuration, preserve the diagnostic archive, and report the exact build and driver dates.
The official sources reviewed for this guidance publish no prevalence rate for post-update stuttering and no attributable benchmark showing a fixed percentage of FPS loss. They also do not establish that buying new hardware is a general solution. A careful baseline, reversible changes, and an evidence-based support report are safer than treating every post-update hitch as proof of a universal game bug.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Marvel Rivals start stuttering after an update?
The timing can coincide with shader compilation after a new game version or graphics-driver update, memory pressure, a changed setting, or a driver problem. The official material does not confirm a widespread patch-specific regression, so compare FPS with latency, record the build and driver dates, and test the same scene before assigning blame to the update.

What are Marvel Rivals’ minimum PC requirements?
The Common Technical Issues FAQ, dated December 1, 2024, lists 64-bit Windows 10 version 1909 or later, 16 GB RAM, an NVIDIA GTX 1060, AMD RX 580, or Intel Arc A380, DirectX 12, and 70 GB of available storage. Meeting those minimums does not guarantee a stable frame rate at every resolution or quality setting.
Should I reinstall my graphics driver?
Yes, if the PC meets the requirements and stuttering continues. Marvel Rivals’ FAQ recommends downloading the latest driver for the installed GPU and selecting the installer’s clean-install option. Restart Windows, then test the same scene and settings so you can tell whether the reinstall changed the behavior.
What does Switch Shader Compilation Mode do?
NetEase announced the experimental launcher option on April 10, 2025. It is intended to reduce game memory consumption and severe FPS drops, frozen visuals, or crashes associated with memory shortage. The publisher especially suggested considering it for players with 16 GB RAM or less who have those symptoms. Its availability and menu location can change.

Is high latency the same as low FPS?
No. High latency can make actions feel delayed or players appear to warp while the FPS counter remains normal. Compare the in-game latency indicator with the frame counter in the same scene. Only lower graphics settings for a rendering problem; a latency-only symptom needs separate network troubleshooting.
When should I contact Marvel Rivals support?
After the clean driver installation, Windows high-performance assignment, controlled graphics tests, and shader-mode comparison fail to resolve the issue. Include your platform, build, driver, hardware, settings, timing, and steps tried.
Do I need to buy a new GPU, more RAM, or an SSD?
There is no general purchase recommendation for post-update stuttering. Marvel Rivals recommends an SSD for a better experience, but its official guidance does not identify an SSD as the universal fix for FPS drops. Measure utilization, temperatures, memory use, and the actual symptom first; the remedy depends on the bottleneck.
