1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStart by learning one hero you enjoy, one backup in another role, and the objective your team is currently playing. Marvel Rivals is a fast 6v6 team game: eliminations help, but coordinated positioning, role coverage, Team-Ups, and objective timing usually decide the match. Vanguards create space and protect teammates, Duelists supply focused damage, and Strategists heal or provide other utility. No hero is universally best, so choose by your preferred distance, pace, mobility, survivability, and how clearly the kit’s job fits the team.
What Marvel Rivals asks you to do
Marvel Rivals presents team combat around six-player lineups. Every match asks you to balance two jobs: win fights and make those fights matter by controlling the objective. A player who earns eliminations far from the objective can still leave the team outnumbered where progress is decided. Conversely, a modest-damage player who stays alive, heals a teammate, blocks a route, or contests at the right second can turn a round.

Heroes are grouped into three roles—Vanguard, Duelist, and Strategist—but the labels describe a hero’s usual contribution, not a rigid rule. Individual kits can add mobility, crowd control, protection, healing, area control, or substantial damage. Read the hero profile and the current in-game ability descriptions before assuming what a character can do.
The three roles and what they contribute
| Role | Primary contribution | Typical decisions | What teammates need from it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vanguard | Frontline presence, protection, and space creation | Where to stand, when to advance, and which route or teammate to protect | A safe place to regroup and an opening in which damage dealers can operate |
| Duelist | Damage and pressure against vulnerable targets | Which angle to attack from, when to commit, and when to disengage | Focused damage that converts the team’s space and information into eliminations |
| Strategist | Healing and other support utility | Who needs resources, where to position safely, and when utility is more valuable than damage | Sustained health, enabling effects, and help stabilizing a fight |
A lineup does not need identical numbers of each role in every situation, and the client’s matchmaking or mode rules can affect what is practical. The important beginner test is whether your team has a way to hold space, deal damage, and recover or enable another push. If a composition repeatedly collapses, first check whether everyone is entering from different directions or whether a missing function is making fights impossible—not simply whether someone selected the “wrong” hero.

Vanguards: make space without fighting alone
Vanguards generally lead the approach, occupy threatening ground, and protect allies from direct pressure. “Front line” does not mean standing in the open until eliminated. Use cover, corners, vertical routes, and defensive abilities to force opponents to spend resources before your teammates expose themselves.
Your first questions should be: What area must we hold? and Where can my team safely stand behind or beside me? A Vanguard who advances beyond healing range may look aggressive but can leave the rest of the lineup without a place to fight. Hold a retreat path, signal a regroup after losing health, and re-enter with teammates instead of repeatedly donating isolated eliminations.
Duelists: turn openings into pressure
Duelists are generally the damage-focused role. Their value comes from choosing favorable angles, finishing weakened opponents, and forcing enemies away from the objective. Damage is most useful when it is concentrated: shooting different full-health targets may create visual noise without removing anyone, while two teammates attacking the same exposed opponent can open the entire fight.

Do not interpret “Duelist” as permission to ignore the team. Check whether your Vanguard can protect your angle and whether a Strategist can reach you. High ground, cover, and off-angles are useful only while you still have an escape or a route back to the group. If an attack fails, disengage and wait for the next coordinated opportunity rather than chasing a fleeing enemy through the map.
Strategists: sustain, enable, and survive
Strategists usually provide healing plus other support effects. Their utility may include protection, control, mobility assistance, or damage that helps secure a target. Staying alive is a team responsibility, but Strategists should also avoid predictable, exposed positions. Use cover and sightlines that let you help allies without standing in the first line of fire.
Prioritize the teammate who can continue contesting or creating space, not merely the player who is closest to death. A small amount of healing that keeps a Vanguard in position or lets a Duelist finish a target can be more valuable than trying to refill an ally who has already retreated beyond reach. When the fight is lost, retreat with the team; healing a lone player inside an unwinnable position only delays the next regroup.
How to choose your first heroes
There is no official “best beginner hero.” Pick according to the way you naturally want to play, then add a backup that covers a different team need. The following comparison is a decision aid, not a ranking.

Use practice modes to inspect every ability, its range, its cooldown behavior, and any conditions that change the result. Test how the hero moves through common terrain, where an ability places you, and what happens when it misses. Then play a few real matches with one narrow goal—for example, staying near cover, grouping before each push, or using one defensive cooldown before taking damage.
Secondary-guide suggestions, not official rankings
A beginner article on Dodge.gg (April 4, 2026) suggests Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Storm as starter Duelists; Captain America, Groot, and Hulk as starter Vanguards; and Mantis, Luna Snow, and Rocket Raccoon as starter Strategists. These are editorial suggestions rather than an official difficulty list, and balance changes can alter how comfortable any hero feels. Treat them as a shortlist to try in practice, not a promise that one will fit every player.
Learn a backup role
After choosing a main, learn at least one hero outside that role. You do not need mastery of the entire roster. A backup lets you respond when your preferred hero is unavailable, when the team lacks a function, or when a mode’s geometry makes your usual approach awkward. It also teaches what teammates need from the other side of a fight: playing a Strategist reveals which positions are safe for healing, while playing a Vanguard shows when a damage dealer’s angle is actually usable.
Abilities: read the kit instead of memorizing a tier list
Each hero has individual abilities, and exact values or behaviors can change with balance updates. Open the hero profile from the selection interface and read the current descriptions in your client. Note four things before a serious match:

- Commitment: Does using it lock you into an animation or location, or can you cancel and retreat?
- Follow-up: Which teammate or objective state makes the ability most valuable?
Build a small mental sequence rather than trying to memorize every interaction: approach with cover, use the ability that creates an opening, apply damage or support, then keep an escape or defensive option for the response. In practice, deliberately miss once to learn the range and deliberately use the ability at the edge of its range to understand its limits.
Team-Ups
Team-Ups are collaboration abilities or enhanced effects that become available when selected heroes meet the required combination. They are a signature system, but the pairings and effects are not static: the official October 6, 2026 balance post includes Team-Up adjustments. Check the current team-selection interface to see which combinations are active in your lineup, who supplies the enabling hero, and what each player actually receives.
Do not force a Team-Up if it makes the rest of the composition impossible to play. A pairing is valuable when the resulting effect supports the map objective and the players understand how to use it. Before the round starts, agree on a simple plan: which hero initiates, which teammate follows, and whether the Team-Up is being saved for a contest, a defensive hold, or a decisive push. Recheck the profile after a patch instead of relying on a remembered pairing or number.

Objectives: let the mode determine your positioning
The three familiar objective patterns use different win conditions. The exact queue, rules, and availability can change, so read the current mode screen; the descriptions below explain the basic decision you should make during a fight.
| Mode | Attacking priority | Defending priority | Common beginner error |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domination | Capture the area, then remain close enough to secure and contest it | Keep opponents out, retake when possible, and contest progress rather than chasing distant targets | Leaving the point to pursue an elimination that does not change control |
| Convoy | Escort the moving payload along its route while taking fights that clear the way | Hold routes and stopping positions, contest the payload, and force attackers away from it | Fighting in a disconnected side lane while the payload moves or stalls |
| Convergence | Capture the area, then escort the payload through the next phase | Prevent the capture, then stop or contest the payload when the phase changes | Continuing the first-phase plan after the objective has changed |
Domination: win the space, not the scoreboard
On a control area, your team needs bodies, survivability, and angles that make entering expensive. A Vanguard can occupy the safest edge of the area while Duelists pressure approaches and Strategists maintain the group. If an opponent leaves the area, do not automatically follow; ask whether removing that player is worth giving up control.
When your team loses the point, regroup before attempting a retake unless progress is nearly complete or a teammate can safely contest. Entering one at a time gives the defenders repeated advantages. Approach together, identify the most dangerous enemy position, and use mobility or protection to reach the area rather than taking disconnected duels outside it.
Convoy: move with the payload
Attackers should escort the payload and use it as both a destination and a source of cover where the map allows. One player may briefly clear a flank or high ground, but the team must return to the route. Defenders should establish a stop point ahead of the payload, use the surrounding geometry, and contest its progress before attackers reach an uncontested checkpoint.
When a fight is lost, retreat toward the next defensible route instead of respawning into the same corner alone. When a fight is won, check the payload immediately; a surviving opponent may be less important than preserving escort progress and preventing a last-second contest.
Convergence: recognize the phase change
Convergence combines an area-capture phase with a payload-escort phase. During capture, play as you would in a control fight: group, contest, and deny the most useful entrances. Once the payload phase begins, reposition along the route. Players who keep standing on the old capture area can leave the moving objective undefended, while players who sprint ahead can create an isolated fight before the team is ready.
Call out the transition in simple terms—“capture first,” then “payload now”—so everyone changes position together. Save movement, protection, or control tools that help the first escort fight rather than spending every resource during the final seconds of capture.

The limited-time Avengers: Infinity War mode
Season 10.5 adds a separate, time-limited Avengers: Infinity War mode. The official notes dated October 6, 2026 describe 12 players forming six two-player squads and competing for six Infinity Stones; the first squad to collect all six wins. The event is scheduled from October 9 through December 11, 2026 UTC. It is not a permanent replacement for the core objective modes, so use the mode’s own in-game instructions for its rules and availability.

Everyone enters on a different timer
Symptom: one player fights while others are still returning from spawn or healing. Fix: wait for the group, then move on a visible signal such as a Vanguard’s advance or a ready Team-Up. If you are the last survivor, retreat rather than turning a lost fight into another staggered death.

The team has damage but no usable space
Symptom: Duelists are eliminated before they can attack, or the team cannot cross an open route. Fix: choose a Vanguard or a hero with protection and use cover and high ground to create a staging area. Damage players should follow that space instead of entering first.
Support players are exposed
Symptom: healing stops at the start of every engagement. Fix: place Strategists behind cover with a clear line to the group, and let the team peel for them when an enemy dives. Strategists should keep an escape route and avoid standing in the same exposed angle as the damage dealers.
Eliminations pull everyone off the objective
Symptom: the opponent loses a player, but your team loses control or payload progress while chasing. Fix: return to the active area or route as soon as the elimination is no longer changing the fight. Ask whether the target is contesting; if not, secure the objective first.
Old patch advice no longer works
Symptom: a remembered cooldown, Team-Up effect, or mode rule behaves differently. Fix: read the current hero profile, team-selection information, and official patch notes. The October 6, 2026 balance post is a useful reference for Season 10.5 changes, but the live client remains the authority for what is available in your match.

- Choose two or three candidates. Select heroes whose distance, pace, and survivability match how you want to play; include at least two roles.
- Use practice mode. Read every ability, test movement and range, and identify one reliable engage, one defensive or escape tool, and one way to help the objective.
- Play the first matches with one measurable habit. Examples include staying within support range, using cover before attacking, or waiting for two teammates before a retake.
- Check the mode before each round. Identify whether you must hold an area, escort a payload, stop one, or change plans after a capture.
- Review one decision after a loss. Ask whether the problem was hero familiarity, positioning, timing, or objective focus. Change one variable in the next match instead of swapping heroes at random.
- Revisit the profile after updates. Season and balance patches can change ability values, interactions, Team-Ups, and available modes.
The habits that produce reliable improvement
- Use cover and high ground deliberately. They reduce incoming fire and create better angles, but only if you can still reach the group or objective.
- Group for major fights. A coordinated five-player push is usually more useful than five separate attempts, even when each player is individually skilled.
- Track the objective’s state. Watch capture progress, payload position, and contest indicators before deciding whether to chase.
- Spend abilities for a purpose. Save protection for an entry, healing utility for a sustained hold, or mobility for a safe exit rather than using everything on the first sight of an enemy.
- Communicate the next action. Short calls such as “regroup,” “contest,” “payload,” or “fall back” are more actionable than blame.
- Keep a flexible roster. One practiced option in each role gives you more ways to solve a team problem than a long list of unfamiliar picks.
How to stay current
Marvel Rivals changes through seasons, balance posts, and limited-time events. Exact skill values, ability behavior, Team-Up effects, and mode availability should be treated as date-sensitive. Before relying on a guide, open the current hero profile and mode description in the client, then read the latest official patch notes—especially after a season update. The Season 10.5 update began October 9, 2026 UTC, and its Infinity War event has a stated end date of December 11, 2026 UTC; neither detail should be assumed to apply indefinitely.
The most useful beginner answer to “who should I pick and why does my team keep falling apart?” is therefore practical rather than a tier-list name: pick a hero whose basic job you understand, learn a backup role, stay close enough to coordinate, and let the active objective determine where you fight.
