Start with the job your team needs, not a memorized “best hero” list. In Marvel Rivals, Duelists apply damage, Vanguards absorb pressure and create space, and Strategists keep teammates effective with healing and utility. Learn one hero in each role, stay near your team, use cover, and treat counterplay as a decision process: identify the problem, coordinate a response, then switch only when another kit solves that problem better. Team-Ups can strengthen a plan, but their effects and partner requirements change with patches, so verify them on the live hero screen before locking in.
What are the three roles in Marvel Rivals?
Every hero belongs to one of three broad jobs. Role labels describe the value you are expected to provide, not a rigid script for every second of a match. A Duelist may need to retreat and protect an objective; a Vanguard may briefly leave the front line to contest a threat; and a Strategist may deal damage when healing is not immediately needed.

Duelist: turn openings into pressure
Duelists are the damage-dealing role. Their contribution is not simply recording the most eliminations; it is forcing opponents to spend resources, finish weakened targets, and make space for an objective push. A useful beginner habit is to attack the target your team is already pressuring rather than selecting a distant opponent because that target looks vulnerable.

A Duelist who survives and returns for the next engagement usually contributes more than one who trades an elimination for a long respawn and lost objective time.

Vanguard: make safe space for others
Vanguards are frontliners. They absorb pressure and create space so teammates can act. “Creating space” can mean holding a doorway, denying a high-value route, forcing an enemy away from an objective, or giving a Duelist a protected angle. It does not mean charging as soon as an ability becomes available.
Before moving forward, check whether allies can follow and whether you have a retreat path. Use defensive abilities to cross dangerous ground, protect a teammate, or survive while contesting—not automatically at the first sign of damage. If your team is not behind you, pause, regroup, and establish a position where your presence helps instead of isolating you.
Strategist: sustain, enable, and control
Strategists support through healing and utility. Utility can include buffs, debuffs, and zone control, so a Strategist is not merely a health-recovery station. Your value may come from making an ally’s attack stronger, weakening a priority enemy, or denying an area long enough for the team to rotate.

Position where you can see the people who need help without becoming the easiest target. Check flanks and escape routes, but do not abandon the front line because an ally is missing a small amount of health. Prioritize imminent danger, keep key cooldowns for a real engagement, and communicate when you are being pressured so the team can turn back together.

Which heroes should a beginner learn first?
A current beginner guide recommends learning at least one hero per role. That approach teaches how matches look from different perspectives and prevents a single locked pick from leaving you unable to meet a team need. It does not promise a winning composition, and it is not an official ranking of easy or powerful heroes.
- Try one hero in each role. Play enough matches to understand the basic attack pattern, movement, defensive option, ultimate, and effective range.
- Notice your comfort range. If you consistently lose close fights, a hero who can operate from farther away may fit better; if you dislike aiming at distance, a mobile close-range kit may feel more natural.
- Build a small comfort pool. Add a second choice in the role you play most, then one flexible choice for a different team need. A small pool is easier to practice than the entire roster.
- Read the live ability details. Tooltips, cooldowns, partner conditions, and interactions can change. Use the current in-game hero interface rather than an old screenshot or list.
- Review decisions, not just results. Ask whether you were in range to help, used cover, and chose a target your team could reach. A loss can still show that your process is improving.
When comparing two possible picks, use these practical questions instead of an unsupported meta ranking:
- Which role or team function is missing?
- Does the hero’s range and mobility match your current comfort?
- Can the kit address the threat currently disrupting your team?
- What Team-Up effect is active with the partners your team is actually using?
- How much practice are you willing to invest before judging the hero?
How should you counter an enemy who is causing problems?
There is no reliable, permanent hero-by-hero counter chart for a patch-sensitive game. Balance changes alter damage, cooldowns, survivability, and Team-Up interactions. Start with the problem you can observe, then choose the least disruptive response.

1. Identify the specific failure
Describe what is happening in functional terms:
- The back line is being reached: an enemy repeatedly gets past your Vanguard and attacks Strategists or isolated Duelists.
- Your team cannot take space: an opponent controls a doorway, objective, or approach route so efficiently that movement becomes costly.
- A target survives focus: your team spends several abilities on one enemy without securing an elimination.
- Exposed players are being punished: teammates die while crossing open ground, peeking the same angle, or fighting alone.
These descriptions point toward different answers. “That hero is overpowered” is less useful because it does not tell your team what to change.

2. Make the team response before switching
Regroup before re-entering, use cover, and focus together. Ask for help through the game’s communication tools when appropriate. A Vanguard can hold a safer route while Duelists take a shared angle; Strategists can reserve utility for the moment the enemy commits. If one player is being chased, turning as a group is often more effective than sending another teammate alone.
3. Change positioning and timing
Move the fight to terrain that reduces the enemy’s advantage. Do not repeatedly challenge the same sightline if cover is available. Enter after a dangerous defensive ability has been used, or wait until your team has arrived before committing. Many apparent “counter” problems are actually timing and spacing problems.
4. Switch when the kit solves the observed threat
If the problem persists, select a hero whose current abilities can answer it—for example, a kit that can protect an exposed ally, displace a space-holder, deny an area, or apply pressure from a safer range. Do not switch because a chart labels a matchup as favorable; switch because you can explain what ability or play pattern you need. Confirm the current tooltip in the hero interface, since exact effects may have changed.

5. Reassess after patches
The official Season 9 launch notes dated July 8, 2026 announced a ground-up Team-Up revamp. A balance post dated October 6, 2026 then documented additional hero and Team-Up tuning. Those dates illustrate why advice copied from an earlier season can become unreliable. Check the current patch notes and in-game values whenever a matchup suddenly feels different.

What are Team-Ups, and how should beginners use them?
The official hero interface presents Team-Up Abilities with separate Base Effect and Enhanced Effect labels. A Team-Up therefore can influence composition choices, but it should support a workable plan rather than force two unsuitable picks.
Read the effect and partner condition before planning
On the hero-select screen or live official hero page, check which partner or partners activate the Team-Up, what the base effect does, and what changes for the enhanced effect. Confirm the wording for the current patch. Dynamic hero details and later balance changes make a copied list an unsafe authority.
Use Team-Ups as a tie-breaker
First fill the team’s basic needs: a way to contest space, apply pressure, sustain allies, and reach the objective. If two choices both fit, the active Team-Up can break the tie. If activating one would leave the team without a necessary role or force everyone into an uncomfortable range, choose the sounder individual kits instead.
Coordinate the timing
Tell teammates which partner condition you are trying to activate and what the effect is intended to accomplish. A defensive effect may be strongest during an entry; a zone or debuff effect may matter when the enemy contests. Treat the Team-Up as a tool with a purpose, not a badge that makes a composition automatically correct.
A simple match routine for new players
- Before the match: choose a familiar hero, check the team’s role coverage, and read the current Team-Up condition if one is relevant.
- During the first engagement: stay close enough to receive help, use cover, and observe which enemy ability is stopping your team.
- After a lost fight: regroup rather than staggering into the objective. Identify one change—route, target, timing, or hero—and make it deliberately.
- After an elimination: convert the advantage into objective progress, safer positioning, or a coordinated retreat. Do not chase a low-value target across the map.
- After the match: keep the lesson that is actionable: missed cover, isolated entry, unused utility, or a switch made too late.
Troubleshooting common beginner problems

Do you need to buy anything or meet special hardware requirements?
Marvel Rivals is free to play, and the official site states that heroes are unlocked and free. You do not need a physical edition, printed guide, or special accessory to learn roles, counterplay, or Team-Ups.
The official release FAQ dated December 5, 2024 lists PC system requirements and recommends installing on an SSD for a better experience. Those are release-era hardware details, not requirements for understanding the game systems, and they should be rechecked against the current official requirements before upgrading a PC. If the game runs poorly, start with current graphics settings, drivers, game-file repair, and official support guidance rather than assuming a gameplay counter will fix a performance problem.
Beginner questions answered
Should I always fill the role the team is missing?
Role coverage is a useful starting point, but comfort and coordination matter. Pick a familiar hero who can perform the missing job rather than selecting an unfamiliar role and contributing little. Expand your pool gradually so the choice becomes practical.
Is switching heroes a sign that I played badly?
No. Switching is productive when it follows a diagnosis: the enemy is denying a route, reaching the back line, surviving focus, or punishing a range mismatch, and another current kit offers a credible answer. Randomly changing after every death makes it harder to learn.
Do Team-Ups decide whether a team wins?
No. They provide additional effects with base and enhanced states, but they do not replace role coverage, positioning, timing, or communication. Use the live conditions as one composition factor.
Where can I verify a hero’s current ability or Team-Up?
Use the in-game hero interface and hero-select screen immediately before playing. The Season 9 revamp and subsequent October 6, 2026 balance changes show why static guides can become stale.
What is the fastest way to improve?
Learn one hero in each role, stay with teammates, use cover, and review one decision after every match. Improvement comes from repeating a clear process and adjusting to the actual threat, not from memorizing an unchanging counter list.
