A 12-year-old may be comfortable with the superhero action and still need limits on voice chat, text chat or spending. Ratings describe the content category assessed by a board; they do not predict how an individual child will react to fast matches, losing streaks, strangers or abusive language.

PEGI ratings are regional. A storefront in another country can show a different age category or different wording, and metadata can change when a platform updates its listing or a rating board changes its policies. Check the rating shown on the platform and account used by your family rather than assuming every country uses PEGI 12.

What PEGI 12 tells you
PEGI 12 means the rating board judged the violence moderate in the context it assessed. It is not a promise that every scene is mild, nor is it a recommendation that every 12-year-old should play without supervision. The age category also does not measure competitive stress, time spent online, chat behaviour or the likelihood of encountering an upsetting player.
What the rating does not tell you
- It does not provide a percentage of matches containing a particular event.
- It does not establish how often blood, gore or profanity appears. The cited listing does not make a language claim and the available evidence does not support a universal no-blood statement.
- It does not guarantee that another player’s voice or text will be polite.

How violent is Marvel Rivals?
The game is built around player-versus-player battles between Marvel heroes and villains. - Does your child become distressed by rapid attacks, explosions or characters being defeated repeatedly?
- Can your child stop after a frustrating loss instead of immediately starting another match?
- Will the child play with a trusted group, or enter matches with unknown players?
- Can the child tell you when an effect, conversation or opponent makes them uncomfortable?
These are suitability questions, not extra rating criteria. Two children of the same age can respond very differently to the same stylized action.
Does Marvel Rivals contain bad language?
The cited Xbox/PEGI listing does not show a language descriptor. That means the listing does not specifically call out profanity; it does not prove that no rude or offensive language can ever appear.

The Entertainment Software Rating Board’s general Teen (13+) guidance says that category may include violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, minimal blood, simulated gambling and/or infrequent strong language. That is a definition of the ESRB category, not evidence that Marvel Rivals contains a particular amount or frequency of profanity, and it is not the PEGI rating for this listing.
Why online chat changes the language question
Text and voice communication from other players is user-generated content. A child can therefore hear or read insults, sexual remarks, discriminatory language or other abuse even when the game’s own rating summary does not list language. The source of that material is another user, not necessarily scripted dialogue written into the game.

Ask your child to leave a conversation, mute the player and tell an adult when a message crosses a line. Do not treat a missing language descriptor as a reason to leave chat permanently unsupervised.
What does Users Interact mean?
The Users Interact label is separate from the PEGI 12 age category. ESRB defines its equivalent interactive-elements notice as possible exposure to “unfiltered/uncensored user-generated content, including user-to-user communications and media sharing via social media and networks.” ESRB also explains that interactive elements identify online features and do not determine the age rating itself.
For Marvel Rivals, the practical implication is that strangers or teammates may communicate through text or voice while a match is in progress or around the online service. The label does not mean every player will contact your child, and it does not describe the tone of every conversation. It tells you that communication is a foreseeable feature requiring its own boundaries.

What the developer says about abuse
In a moderation notice dated 16 October 2026, the Marvel Rivals team said that, through text or voice chat, insults, malicious harassment, discrimination and hate speech can damage communication and the match experience. That notice is useful evidence that abusive behaviour is an enforcement concern, not proof that moderation will catch every message immediately. Rules and enforcement can evolve, so check the current in-game policy when you set up an account.
Safer online-play routine
- Decide before the first match whether voice chat, text chat or both are allowed.
- Use the game’s mute, block and report controls as soon as a player becomes abusive; do not argue with the person.
- Keep the child’s account name and other identifying information private.
- Agree that the child will leave the match or call you if threats, hate speech, sexual content or targeted harassment appears.
- Review the account’s recent contacts and privacy settings periodically, especially after an update.
What in-game purchases and random items mean
The listing flags In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items) and displays paid Lattice currency add-ons. ESRB explains that this descriptor applies when paid digital goods can provide an item without the buyer knowing the specific item in advance, such as a pack or mystery award.
This is a spending and probability issue, not a claim that every purchase is random. Some offers may identify exactly what they contain, while others can include an unknown result. The cited evidence does not establish the odds, price of each offer, whether a particular item can be earned through play, or whether every item is available in every region.
Controls parents should set
- Require an adult password, approval or account confirmation for purchases on the console, PC store or payment account.
- Remove saved card details from a child-managed account when practical.
- Set a clear allowance and explain that virtual currency is real money converted into an in-game balance.
- Tell the child never to use a parent’s password or payment method without permission.
- Check receipts and transaction history, including small repeat purchases that can accumulate.
Platform family-safety settings are the right place to enforce purchase approval; the exact menu names differ by console, operating system and account type. The game’s purchase descriptor should be treated as a reason to configure those controls before play, not after an unexpected charge.

Is Marvel Rivals suitable for a 12-year-old?
It can be suitable for some 12-year-olds when an adult is comfortable with moderate stylized violence and has set online and spending limits. PEGI 12 addresses the assessed violence, while Users Interact and the random-item purchase notice identify risks that require separate decisions.
A reasonable fit
- The child understands that superhero combat is fictional and is not distressed by repeated defeats, powers or explosions.
- Voice and text chat are disabled or limited to known friends, or the child has demonstrated reliable mute, block and report habits.
- Purchases require adult approval and the child understands that random-item offers are not guaranteed rewards.
- An adult can check in about behaviour, sleep, time limits and upsetting encounters.
Reasons to wait or restrict access
- The child is very sensitive to combat effects, intense competition or losing.
- The child is likely to answer strangers, reveal personal information or retaliate in chat.
- The child has difficulty stopping after a match or after a disappointing reward.

Your child encounters harassment
Have the child stop replying, mute or block the account, preserve the relevant in-game information if the reporting system requests it, and submit a report through the game’s available reporting tool. The official FAQ says cheating can be reported in-game or through the official Discord support channels; use the current official support route for the specific problem. If a message contains a credible threat or immediate danger, involve the appropriate local authority rather than relying only on a game report.
An unwanted purchase appears
Stop further access to the payment method, change the account password, review transaction history and contact the platform’s billing support promptly. Turn on purchase approval before the child returns to the game. Whether a refund is available depends on the platform’s terms and the circumstances of the transaction.

End the session, ask which effect or interaction caused the reaction and adjust the relevant setting. You can restrict chat without necessarily banning the entire game, or pause play if the combat itself is the problem. Recheck the local rating and current privacy options after major updates.
