What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Short answer: Marvel Rivals Accessories and Costumes are separate cosmetic categories. Costumes are what players commonly call skins and change a hero’s overall appearance. Accessories are hero-specific cosmetic items introduced in Season 3, with Accessory Points earned in matches and redeemed in the Shop. Neither category is documented as changing abilities, damage, health, or other combat statistics.
The Marvel Rivals team’s published monetization policy says paid cosmetics provide visual changes only. The meaningful difference is therefore presentation and customization—not power. Store contents, rewards, and availability can change with patches, so an item mentioned in an older update is not automatically obtainable today.

Accessories and Costumes are different systems
Marvel Rivals uses Costumes as its official term for hero outfits. The community often calls these outfits skins, so “Costumes versus skins” is usually the same comparison. Accessories are a separate cosmetic category tied to individual heroes.

A Costume changes the hero’s primary outfit and visual theme. An Accessory is an additional, hero-specific cosmetic item handled through the accessory system introduced in Season 3. The official notes do not establish that every Accessory works with every hero, and they do not provide a complete, permanently available catalog.

| Question | Accessories | Costumes (skins) |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A separate cosmetic item associated with a particular hero. | A hero outfit or appearance; “skin” is the common player term. |
| What changes? | The hero’s cosmetic presentation. The cited patch notes do not describe ability or stat changes. | The hero’s overall visual appearance, with some outfits offering documented color, chroma, or effect options. |
| Documented acquisition | Earn Accessory Points in matches and redeem them in the Shop for hero-specific accessories, according to the Season 3 notes. | Costumes can appear in store bundles and can also be distributed through Battle Passes, events, or achievements; the exact offering changes over time. |
| Who can use it? | The specific hero named by the item’s listing. | The hero for whom the Costume was created. |
| Combat advantage | No stat or pay-to-win benefit is described in the official materials reviewed. | The developer’s published cosmetic policy classifies paid visual items as non-stat-boosting. |
Do Accessories or skins change gameplay?
The clearest official answer comes from the Marvel Rivals team’s December 5, 2024 monetization statement: We will be charging for cosmetics that will provide only visual changes, with no stat bonuses or pay-to-win elements.
The full statement is available in Dev Talk Vol.07 | Monetization.
On that stated policy, buying or unlocking a Costume or Accessory should not increase a hero’s health, damage, movement speed, cooldown performance, healing, armor, or any other combat statistic. The comparison is about how a hero is presented, not about building a stronger version of that hero.
That policy does not prove every technical detail that players might wonder about. The statement does not, for example, provide a universal guarantee about identical hitboxes, visibility in every map or lighting condition, animation readability, or competitive perception for every individual Costume. Those are separate technical questions. The supported conclusion is narrower and more useful: the developer describes these paid cosmetics as visual-only and says they contain no stat bonuses or pay-to-win elements.
How Accessories work
Accessories received a documented earn-and-redeem path with the Season 3 update. The July 3, 2025 patch notes say: Accessories: Earn Accessory Points in matches and redeem them in the Shop for hero-specific accessories.
Read the original wording in the Season 3 patch notes.
1. Play matches to earn Accessory Points
The published feature description identifies matches as the way to earn Accessory Points. It does not state a universal points-per-match rate in the cited material, so do not rely on an assumed number or expect every mode, event, or bonus period to pay identically. Your current client is the authority for the balance and any active progression rules.
2. Open the Shop and inspect the accessory listings
Accessory Points are redeemed in the Shop. Look for an Accessory listing that names the hero you play. Because the system is hero-specific, an item made for one hero should not be treated as a universal cosmetic that can be moved freely to the rest of the roster.
3. Check the item’s current eligibility before spending points
Read the listing carefully for its hero association, price in Accessory Points, and any availability timer or event condition shown by the game. Patch notes announce systems and offerings at a particular point in time; they do not keep a listing permanently available. If an older guide shows an item that is missing from your Shop, the guide may simply be describing a past rotation or event.

4. Redeem the item through the Shop
Use the Shop’s redemption control once you have confirmed the hero and the current cost. The official notes establish the earn-and-redeem flow, but they do not publish one permanent interface path for every future client version. Button labels and tabs can move when the game is updated.
5. Review the hero’s customization screen
After redemption, open that hero’s customization area and look for the newly owned Accessory. The exact equip or preview control can vary with the current interface. If the item does not appear, first verify that you are viewing the correct hero and that the transaction completed; then restart or refresh the client before treating it as a missing purchase.
How Costumes (skins) work
Costumes are the larger, primary appearance changes for a hero. They can replace the default outfit with a different design or theme while leaving the hero’s role and combat kit intact under the developer’s cosmetic-only policy.
Where Costumes can come from
The monetization statement describes several distribution channels rather than a single permanent store. Costumes may be offered in store bundles, while other cosmetics can be associated with a Battle Pass, an event, or an achievement. A particular Costume may therefore have a different acquisition route from an Accessory, and that route can change when a season or event ends.

Costume color options
April 2025 update notes documented color options that can be switched in the Costumes interface after a Costume has been purchased. This is a customization layer inside the Costume system, not evidence that the item changes combat behavior. The relevant update is recorded in the April 2025 patch notes.
Chromas and visual effects
Later patch notes list additional Costume chromas and effects. A chroma changes the appearance of an eligible Costume; an effect can add another visual treatment where the game supports it. These options should be read as presentation choices. The notes do not describe them as damage modifiers, ability upgrades, or competitive advantages.

Accessories versus Costumes: the practical differences
The following comparison focuses on what the documented systems actually establish, rather than guessing at an unseen item catalog.
Recommended Free Tools
| Use case | Accessory | Costume (skin) |
|---|---|---|
| You want a smaller cosmetic addition for one hero | Designed as a separate, hero-specific cosmetic category. | Usually changes the hero’s main outfit and overall visual identity. |
| You want a documented match-based progression route | Season 3 notes explicitly describe earning Accessory Points in matches, then redeeming them in the Shop. | No single match-point route is established for every Costume; acquisition can involve stores, Battle Passes, events, or achievements. |
| You want color customization | The cited official notes do not provide a complete current Accessory customization guide. | April 2025 notes document switchable color options, and later notes list chromas and effects for some offerings. |
| You are concerned about pay-to-win | Classified by the developer’s stated cosmetic policy as visual-only. | Also covered by the same visual-only, no-stat-bonus policy. |
| You are checking whether an old item is still obtainable | Check the current Shop, because Accessory listings and rotations can change. | Check the current store, event, Battle Pass, or achievement requirements; an old patch does not guarantee current availability. |
What changed in the system over time?
Marvel Rivals has expanded cosmetic customization rather than keeping Costumes as a single fixed appearance toggle.
April 2025: Costume color switching
The April 2025 notes added documented color options that players could switch in the Costumes interface after purchasing an eligible Costume. This means two players can own the same base Costume while selecting different supported color presentations. It does not mean that every Costume has every color, or that every color option is included automatically.
July 2025: Accessories and Accessory Points
Season 3 introduced the explicit Accessory category and its match-based Accessory Point redemption flow. The announcement is a snapshot of the feature at launch: it explains the system, but it is not a promise that every item, price, or Shop rotation remains unchanged.
January 2026: Accessories continued in later updates
The Season 6 update published January 14, 2026, listed new Accessories, showing that the category continued to receive content after its introduction. The update is documented in the Season 6 patch notes. A later-season mention confirms continued development, not a complete inventory or permanent ownership of any named item.

September 2026: More store customization and time limits
The September 23, 2026 notes listed recent store customization offerings and time-limited availability, alongside Costumes, chromas, and Ultimate Ability VFX. See the September 2026 patch notes. “Time-limited” is the important practical warning: an item can be part of the game’s current cosmetic system without being purchasable every day.
How to decide which cosmetic category you want
Choose an Accessory when the hero-specific detail is the point
An Accessory makes sense when you want a cosmetic item associated with one particular hero and prefer the documented match-to-Accessory-Points route. Before spending points, confirm that the listing names the hero you intend to customize and that the item is currently available.

Choose a Costume when you want a full visual redesign
A Costume is the more direct choice when your goal is to change the hero’s main outfit, theme, colors, or other supported visual treatment. If color options or chromas matter to you, inspect the specific Costume’s description rather than assuming every outfit supports the same set of variants.
Use the current client for availability decisions
Do not choose based only on a screenshot, launch article, or old video. Cosmetic stores and event rewards are time-sensitive. The current Shop and the relevant event or Battle Pass screen provide the operative information for your account and region.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating “skin” and “Accessory” as synonyms
Players commonly use “skin” as a broad word for cosmetics, but Marvel Rivals’ own labels separate Costumes from Accessories. Use the category shown in the client when searching for an item or explaining what you own.
Mistake: assuming an Accessory is roster-wide
The Season 3 description specifically calls them hero-specific accessories. Check the named hero before redeeming points; ownership of one item should not be read as permission to equip it on every hero.
Mistake: expecting a cosmetic to improve a build
The official monetization statement promises visual changes with no stat bonuses or pay-to-win elements. A Costume or Accessory is not a substitute for learning a hero, changing a team composition, or adjusting settings.
Mistake: assuming a patch note is a live catalog
Patch notes record what was introduced or offered in a dated update. They do not guarantee that an item remains in the Shop, that an event is still running, or that an old price is current. Use the in-game listing for the present state.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMistake: assuming every Costume has the same customization
Color options, chromas, and effects are documented for some offerings, not universally for every Costume. Inspect the individual item’s description and preview.
Best Value
Troubleshooting an accessory or Costume that is not visible
The item is not in the Shop
Check whether the listing was tied to a past rotation, season, or time-limited event. Search the current Shop tabs and read any timer or event requirement. A reference to the item in a previous patch does not establish that it is available now.
You redeemed an item but cannot find it
Confirm that you are viewing the hero named by the listing, then reopen the customization screen or restart the client. If the Shop transaction completed but the item remains absent, record the item name, hero, and transaction status before contacting the game’s support channel.
The color or chroma option is missing
Verify that the base Costume is owned and that the selected variant is supported by that Costume. The April 2025 notes describe color switching for eligible Costumes, while later notes list additional chromas and effects; neither establishes that every outfit includes every variant.
You expected a gameplay change
Return to the item description and the developer’s cosmetic policy. These categories are intended to alter presentation. If you are looking for a balance change, ability adjustment, or new mechanic, consult gameplay patch notes rather than cosmetic listings.
What is established—and what is not
As of the official updates available through September 2026, the broad structure is clear: Costumes are hero appearances, Accessories are a separate hero-specific category, Accessory Points can be earned in matches and redeemed in the Shop, and the developer says paid cosmetics have no stat bonuses or pay-to-win elements.
What is not established by those materials is a complete current Accessory catalog, a universal list of Costume color or effect support, permanent availability, fixed prices, identical technical behavior for every visual asset, or one unchanging menu path across future patches. Those details belong to the live client and can change independently of an older announcement.
Bottom line: presentation changes, not power
Marvel Rivals Accessories and Costumes both change how a hero is presented, but they are not the same item type. Costumes—often called skins—change the main outfit and may support colors, chromas, or effects. Accessories are separate, hero-specific cosmetics with a documented match-based Accessory Point redemption path. Neither should be selected for combat statistics: the developer’s published policy says cosmetics provide visual changes only and contain no stat bonuses or pay-to-win elements. For the most accurate purchase or redemption decision, check the current Shop and the specific hero’s customization screen.
