Martin began as a small team’s attempt to make a personal assistant feel more useful through conversation, voice, and connections to everyday apps. Founder Dawson Chen describes a path from a grocery-store support chatbot to a JARVIS-inspired assistant—an origin story built mainly from founder recollections and product descriptions, not independent performance testing.
What Martin was trying to build
Martin’s central idea was a personal assistant that could do more than answer isolated questions. In a July 2024 launch discussion, Dawson Chen described it as “a better Siri with an LLM brain and deeper integrations with everyday apps.” The proposed experience combined conversational access with practical actions: checking a calendar, setting reminders, researching a topic, preparing briefings, handling email, using Slack, and communicating through several channels.

Chen also described a more personalized layer. Martin was intended to use previous conversations and connected services to retain context, anticipate what a user might need, and support routines such as “morning syncs” and “evening debriefs.” These were stated product goals and feature descriptions, not independently verified measures of reliability, accuracy, or autonomy.

Chen’s account places Martin’s earliest roots in a different product concept. In a 2024 interview, he recalled that he and friends first explored a customer-support chatbot for grocery stores. As language models and voice capabilities improved, the team shifted toward a personal assistant.

That chronology is founder-reported rather than an independently documented company history. Chen has characterized the motivation as a childhood-inspired desire to build a personal AI like JARVIS, writing: “A year ago, we set our minds to building a personal AI like Jarvis using LLMs.” The JARVIS reference communicates the ambition—an assistant that can understand context and coordinate tasks—rather than evidence that Martin matched the fictional system’s capabilities.
The founding team and company timeline
The available accounts describe the team at different points, so they should not be merged into one definitive roster. Y Combinator’s 2024 launch announcement names Dawson Chen, Harsh Deep, and Arjun Dixit as founders. In a later account, Chen identifies Ethan Hou as the cofounder who joined him while rebuilding the effort. Those descriptions may reflect different stages of the project or different ways of identifying the team.
In February 2025, Chen announced a $2 million fundraise for Martin. That is a founder-reported financing announcement, not a verified lifetime-funding total or a statement of the company’s current financial position.

How users were meant to interact with Martin
Multiple conversation channels
Chen’s launch description envisioned Martin as available through voice and messaging rather than being confined to a single app screen. The current US App Store listing describes access through voice, SMS, WhatsApp, email, or phone, alongside an iPhone and iPad app. Store listings are vendor-controlled and can change; the listing alone does not establish present service availability, uptime, or feature reliability.
Actions across everyday tools
The product descriptions focus on linking conversation to work and personal administration. Listed or proposed functions include:
- Research and information gathering
- Reminders and to-do management
- Calendar and email management
- Slack interactions
- Briefings and routine check-ins
- Proactive assistance based on remembered context
The distinction matters: these are capabilities Martin was designed or marketed to provide. The available material does not include an independent benchmark showing how accurately or consistently it completed those tasks.

What the published numbers actually mean
Martin’s user and funding figures come from different sources, dates, and definitions. They should not be combined into a growth rate or treated as current operating metrics.

The 10,000-user and 100,000-user references therefore describe different contexts. One is a dated founder snapshot; the other is an undated retrospective about a prior product. Neither establishes how many people use Martin now.

For early users in July 2024, Chen described a $30 monthly price following a seven-day trial. The current US App Store listing instead labels the app as free with in-app purchases. Because the listing and the launch price refer to different moments and channels, the historical $30 figure should not be presented as today’s subscription cost.

The sources available for this story do not establish whether Martin is currently operating, what plans are offered now, or whether every launch-described integration remains available. Anyone considering the app should check its current store page and in-app terms directly.
Martin versus a conventional voice assistant
Chen’s comparison with Siri identifies the intended difference, not a measured result. The proposed advantages were:
- Broader integrations: deeper links to calendars, email, Slack, reminders, and messaging services.
- Cross-task action: moving from an answer in a chat to carrying out related tasks.
- Conversational access: using voice, SMS, WhatsApp, email, or phone instead of one device-bound interface.
- Context and memory: using prior conversations and connected services to make assistance more personalized.
There is no independent evaluation in the available record that demonstrates Martin was more capable than Siri or another assistant on these dimensions. The comparison is best understood as the startup’s product thesis.
Why the origin story matters
Martin illustrates a common shift in early AI startups: a narrow automation idea becomes a broader platform when better language and voice models make natural conversation practical. The team’s challenge was not merely generating text. It was turning conversation into dependable actions across services while preserving context over time.
That explains both the appeal and the uncertainty in Martin’s story. The vision was unusually broad for a small team, but the public evidence mainly records intentions, founder recollections, selected user snapshots, and a historical launch price. It does not provide a current operating profile or independent proof that the full JARVIS-like promise was realized.
