The Marshall Kilburn III is a large, heavy, premium portable speaker built for loud, room-filling sound rather than pocket-sized carrying. It is a good fit if you want volume and bass from a speaker you can move between rooms or take outdoors on short trips. It is a poor fit if you need something light enough to clip to a bag all day. Its advertised battery life of 50+ hours is a manufacturer claim, and the one independent runtime test we have on record, by RTINGS, measured a little over 23 hours.
Who the Kilburn III is for
Buy the Kilburn III if the speaker will mostly live on a table, shelf or patio and you want it to sound fuller and louder than a compact Bluetooth unit. Skip it if your main use is hiking, cycling or travel where weight matters. The Emberton II is the lighter option in Marshall’s own lineup, and RTINGS describes it as the more portable of the two.

Size and portability
At 2.8 kg, the Kilburn III is heavy for a portable speaker. It has a carry strap, which makes it manageable for moving between rooms or carrying to a garden, but it is not something to pack casually. The weight is the main practical trade-off of the design. If you regularly carry a speaker in a backpack or take it on trains, the lighter Emberton II will suit you better.
#1 Best Overall
- 50+ HOURS OF PORTABLE PLAYTIME: Portable playtime for over two days.
- TRUE STEREOPHONIC: 360° sound you can hear wherever you stand.
- DUST & WATER-RESISTANT: IP54 rated, resistant to dust and water splashes.
- DYNAMIC LOUDNESS: Perfect audio at every volume.
- TACTILE CONTROLS: Intuitive controls in Marshall’s signature style.
Sound: volume, bass and compression
Marshall’s specifications point to a speaker built for volume. The combination of a 4-inch woofer, two full-range drivers and 50 W total amplification is the reason for that. In RTINGS’ comparison with the Emberton II, the reviewer concluded that the Kilburn III plays louder and shows less compression at maximum volume. RTINGS also called it the more enticing option for sound. That is a comparative judgement from one reviewer, not a universal result, and it does not measure how the speaker performs in your own room.
The trade-off is weight and size. A speaker that delivers more output at high volume is larger and heavier, so the sound advantage and the portability disadvantage come as a pair.

Battery life: the claim and the test
Marshall advertises more than 50 hours of portable playtime on its current product page. RTINGS’ battery test, updated July 13, 2026, measured a little over 23 hours. These two numbers are not measuring the same thing, and neither is a promise for your use.
| Source | Figure | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Marshall product page (accessed 2026) | 50+ hours of portable playtime | Manufacturer claim; the volume level and listening conditions are not stated in the material we reviewed |
| RTINGS battery test (review updated July 13, 2026) | A little over 23 hours | Measured under RTINGS’ own methodology and test conditions |
Expect a runtime closer to the independent figure than to the headline number if you listen at high volume for long stretches. Actual battery life depends on volume, content, temperature and how often you use the charging function.

Charging and using it as a power bank
Marshall says the Kilburn III charges over USB-C and can act as a charging bank for other devices. Its support instructions set out the conditions:
- The speaker must be switched on to charge another device.
- Its charge must be above 20%.
- You need a separate cable suitable for the device you are charging.
- USB-C input is listed as 5 V/3 A or 9 V/3 A, and the charging instructions recommend a 15 to 27 W supply.
Marshall’s launch material also describes a 20-minute charge giving eight hours of playtime with a 30 W USB-C PD charger, and a full recharge in three hours. These are Marshall’s stated charging conditions. They do not contradict the 15 to 27 W recommendation, but a larger charger is the setup Marshall used for the quick-charge claim.
Rank #4
- ROOM-FILLING SOUND: Acton III has an even wider soundstage than its predecessor, delivering immersive, room-filling Marshall signature sound.
- PAIR, PLAY AND TURN IT UP: Acton III is straight to business, so you can just pair and play without the hassle of a complex set-up
- NEXT-GENERATION BLUETOOTH: Acton III is ready for the future of Bluetooth technology and has been built to deliver next-generation Bluetooth features the moment they are available
- ICONIC DESIGN THAT STANDS APART: Marshall has taken its signature rock ’n’ roll home speaker line-up and given it a stripped-back look that makes a loud statement
- A MORE SUSTAINABLE APPROACH: While staying true to the iconic design that speaks to the brand’s heritage, Acton III has a PVC-free build that comprises 70% recycled plastic and only vegan materials.
Durability: what IP54 does and does not cover
IP54 means the speaker is protected against limited dust ingress and against water splashes. It does not mean the speaker can be submerged, and Marshall does not describe it as suitable for immersion. Do not treat it as waterproof. Keep it out of pools, sinks and rain, and make sure it is dry before you plug it in to charge.

The Kilburn III supports Bluetooth 5.3 with Auracast and multipoint, so you can connect two sources at once. It also has a 3.5 mm AUX input for wired playback. The physical bass, treble and volume controls are a practical advantage over touch-only designs, since you can adjust sound without opening an app. The Marshall Bluetooth app is available and Marshall recommends it for firmware updates and the wider product experience, but the speaker plays audio without it.

Price
Marshall’s pages showed list prices of £299.99 in the UK and $379.99 in the US, both accessed October 7, 2026. Prices change by retailer and market, so check current listings before buying. At these prices, the Kilburn III is a premium purchase, and whether it is good value depends on whether you need its loudness and sound more than you need portability.
Materials and repair
Marshall states that 84% of the plastic in the main unit is recycled and that the product is PVC-free. These are manufacturer material claims that we have not seen verified by a third party. Marshall also advertises authorised repairs and spare parts for the Kilburn III, but says eligible models vary by market. Check your local Marshall support page before you rely on repair availability.
Launch context
Marshall announced the Kilburn III on May 27, 2025, with global availability on Marshall.com that day and retailer availability from June 10, 2025. Product manager Hanna Wallner described it as “a remarkable upgrade from the highly appreciated Kilburn II,” and said the redesign extended playtime to over 50 hours.

Verdict
The Kilburn III is a loud, bass-forward portable speaker for people who accept its weight in exchange for sound and controls. Its battery claim is generous, and the independent test result is lower, so plan around the measured figure rather than the headline. IP54 covers splashes and dust, not immersion. If you want a lighter travel speaker, look at the Emberton II. If you want the Kilburn III’s volume and do not mind carrying it, it is a strong choice at its price.
