Marshall Emberton III vs Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen): Which Portable Speaker Should You Buy?

Choose the Marshall Emberton III if long claimed battery life, stereo playback and Marshall’s design-led hardware are your priorities. Choose the Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) if you prefer Bose’s app and speaker-pairing features, a more balanced family-level sound profile and stronger maximum-volume behavior in independent testing. The comparison is conditional: current prices were not established on a like-for-like basis, and the available independent test does not confirm that it used these exact current generations.

The short answer

These are compact, water-resistant Bluetooth speakers aimed at different priorities rather than identical buyers. Emberton III’s strongest published advantages are its substantially longer claimed playtime, stereo handling, multipoint connectivity and repairability provisions. SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) offers Bose app support, stereo and party modes, and an independent comparison that found the Bose family more balanced and less compressed at high volume.

Do not treat the battery figures as a laboratory head-to-head result. Marshall and Bose specify them under different conditions, and the independent comparison labels its products simply “Marshall Emberton” and “Bose SoundLink Flex.” It does not establish that the tested units were Emberton III and SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen).

What is being compared?

Marshall Emberton III

Emberton III is Marshall’s current compact Emberton model in the listed specifications. It uses Bluetooth 5.3 LE, supports the Marshall Bluetooth app and multipoint connections, and is described as LE Audio ready. Marshall also lists a built-in microphone for hands-free calls.

Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen)

The Bose product in this comparison is specifically the SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen), which Bose identifies as a product sold from 2024. It uses Bluetooth 5.3, a USB-C input and the Bose app. Non-SE versions list a built-in microphone. Bose supports stereo mode with an identical second-generation speaker and a party mode.

Do not confuse it with the first-generation Flex

Bose’s December 9, 2021 announcement concerns the original SoundLink Flex, not the second generation. That release describes the first-generation product’s orientation sensing, IP67 rating and claimed playback time. It should not be used as proof that every first-generation feature is unchanged on the 2nd Gen.

Battery life: Marshall wins on the claim, but not on comparability

Marshall’s advertised endurance is the clearest reason to consider Emberton III for travel, camping or long days away from an outlet. Its quick-charge claim is also useful when you forgot to charge before leaving: a short top-up is presented as enough for several hours of listening. The stated two-hour full-charge time means you can usually restore the battery during a work session or overnight without a special charger.

Bose’s rating is explicitly tied to moderate volume and comes with a warning that louder playback shortens runtime. Its four-hour charging figure is specified with a 1.5 A USB supply. That makes the Bose number easier to interpret for ordinary listening, but it is not directly comparable with Marshall’s “32+ hours” claim because the brands do not state the same test conditions. Maximum-volume use, codec behavior, temperature, age of the battery and listening content can all change real-world results.

Neither figure tells you how many hours you will get at a particular loudness. A speaker used quietly for podcasts may exceed the practical experience of someone playing bass-heavy music outdoors. Cold weather can also affect portable battery performance, while an older battery generally delivers less capacity than a new one. Consider the claims as planning guidance rather than a guaranteed schedule.

If battery anxiety is your deciding factor, the practical choice is Emberton III based on the manufacturer claims. Treat that as a specification advantage, not a promise of a particular number of hours in your own use. If your speaker normally lives near a charger and you value other features more, the shorter Bose rating may be less important.

Durability and outdoor use

Both speakers carry an IP67 rating. Marshall adds a specific immersion statement: Emberton III can be submerged at 1 metre (3 feet) for up to 30 minutes. An IP rating is a protection classification, not an instruction to operate a speaker underwater; keep charging ports closed and allow the unit to dry before connecting a cable.

Neither rating makes a speaker immune to impact, saltwater corrosion, sand abrasion or damage from repeated drops. For a pool, shower shelf or rainy campsite, the protection level is reassuring. For boating or regular exposure to seawater, rinse according to the manufacturer’s care guidance and inspect seals rather than assuming the rating eliminates maintenance. Do not charge either speaker while it is wet, even if the enclosure survived a splash.

IP67 also describes dust protection and temporary fresh-water immersion under specified laboratory conditions. It does not describe sound quality after a dunk, resistance to chemicals or protection from a cracked housing. A protective pouch and sensible placement still matter when the speaker is carried in a beach bag or left on uneven ground.

Sound and listening behavior

The available independent comparison reports a family-level trade-off. It describes Bose as more versatile overall, with a more balanced sound profile and less compression when the speaker is played loudly. It describes the Marshall as handling stereo content without downmixing, offering better directivity and producing a wider, more immersive-feeling soundstage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those findings are useful for understanding the design priorities, but they are not a confirmed Emberton III-versus-Flex-2nd-Gen laboratory result. The comparison pages use the shorter product names “Marshall Emberton” and “Bose SoundLink Flex,” and their listed test pages were updated August 10 and August 19, 2026. Firmware, revisions and exact model generations can change behavior.

Choose Bose for a safer all-round tuning

A balanced profile is generally the less polarizing choice when one speaker has to handle podcasts, acoustic music, pop and background listening. The reported lower compression at maximum volume also favors Bose when you need to fill a larger room without the sound becoming as congested. That does not mean Bose is louder in every room; it means the comparison reported fewer audible changes as volume approached its maximum.

Choose Marshall for stereo material and directional listening

The reported ability to preserve stereo content, stronger directivity and wider perceived stage appeal to listeners who sit in front of the speaker and care about spatial presentation. Directivity can also help when you want the sound aimed toward one listening position rather than spread equally around a room. Placement still matters: a wall, corner or tabletop can change bass and reflections more than a specification line suggests.

Room size, placement, recording quality and personal taste remain decisive. These descriptions should guide a listening test or return-period trial, not substitute for one. If possible, use familiar tracks at the volume you normally choose and listen from both close range and several metres away.

Calls, apps and speaker pairing

Emberton III features

Marshall lists a built-in microphone and describes it as making hands-free talking simpler and clearer; that is the manufacturer’s marketing description rather than an independent call-quality measurement. The Marshall Bluetooth app provides the software layer, while multipoint lets the speaker maintain connections with more than one source. Marshall also lists LE Audio readiness, which signals compatibility planning for that Bluetooth capability but does not by itself guarantee that every phone or future feature will work.

Multipoint is most useful in a household or small office where two people alternate between phones, or when you keep a laptop and phone connected. Actual switching behavior can depend on the source devices and their operating systems. Pairing a new device may still require disconnecting another, so do not assume multipoint removes every Bluetooth-management step.

SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) features

Bose lists a microphone on non-SE versions and provides Bose app compatibility. Its stereo mode has a strict requirement: the second speaker must be another identical 2nd Gen unit. Party mode is a separate multi-speaker option. If you are buying a second speaker later, match the generation and variant rather than assuming any SoundLink Flex can form a stereo pair.

  • Wireless Bluetooth streaming
  • 12 hours of playtime

That requirement is important when shopping clearance stock. A first-generation Flex may look nearly identical in a retailer photograph, but the Bose pairing instructions for the 2nd Gen do not establish cross-generation stereo compatibility. Keep receipts and verify the model label before opening a second speaker if a matched pair is central to your plan.

Which software approach is better?

  • Pick Marshall if multipoint and LE Audio readiness matter more than Bose’s party/stereo ecosystem.
  • Pick Bose if you expect to build a two-speaker setup around identical 2nd Gen units or want Bose’s app-based modes.
  • For calls, both product pages identify microphones, but neither source establishes an independent ranking of voice quality.
  • For future compatibility, check the phone, tablet and computer specifications you actually use; Bluetooth 5.3 on both products does not guarantee identical feature support across every source.

Portability, materials and what is in the box

Emberton III’s published weight is 0.67 kg and its dimensions are 160 × 68 × 76.9 mm. Those figures make it a compact carry-on speaker, although the exact fit depends on your bag and whether you use a protective case. Marshall includes a USB-C charging cable, printed documentation and a fastening strap only with the Brown Emberton III variant. Do not assume another color includes the strap.

The fastening strap distinction is easy to miss in a marketplace listing. If you want to hang the speaker from a handle or hook, select the Brown variant only when the listing explicitly confirms the included strap. The source does not establish a separate strap product or compatibility with other colors, so do not budget for an accessory based on an assumption.

The cited Bose specification page does not provide a directly comparable weight, dimension or box-content list. That omission is a reason to check the retailer’s exact listing before purchase, especially if a carry loop, case or cable is important to you. USB-C input confirms the connector, not the presence of a spare cable or a particular wall adapter.

Marshall’s statement about user-replaceable spare parts and authorised repairs is relevant for long-term ownership. Availability can vary by market, so confirm that parts and service are offered where you live before treating repairability as a guaranteed benefit. This may matter more to frequent travellers and outdoor users than a small difference in launch price, but no current service cost or turnaround time is established here.

Which one should you buy?

Buy Emberton III when these are your priorities

  • You want the longer manufacturer-rated playtime and a useful short-charge claim.
  • You value stereo-content handling, directivity and a wider-feeling soundstage as described in the independent family-level comparison.
  • You need multipoint connectivity for switching between two source devices.
  • LE Audio readiness or Marshall’s app ecosystem fits your phone and future upgrade plans.
  • You prefer the published weight and dimensions, or you want the possibility of replaceable parts and authorised repair where available.
  • You specifically want the Brown variant’s included fastening strap and have verified that detail in the listing.

Buy SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) when these are your priorities

  • You prefer a more balanced reported sound profile for mixed listening.
  • You regularly play loudly and want the independent comparison’s reported lower compression at high volume.
  • You plan to use Bose’s stereo mode with another identical 2nd Gen speaker or its party mode.
  • You want Bose app compatibility and do not need Marshall’s multipoint or LE Audio feature set.
  • You are buying a non-SE version and want the microphone listed for that variant.
  • You are comfortable with a 12-hour moderate-volume rating and normally have access to a charger.

When neither is an automatic choice

Do not choose on price until you compare current listings for the same generation, color and variant in your country. Comparable street prices and stock were not established here, so a value-for-money winner cannot be defended. A discounted first-generation SoundLink Flex is not automatically equivalent to the 2nd Gen, and a retailer’s “Emberton” label may omit the Emberton III designation.

Likewise, do not assume that a bundle is better simply because it includes a case or charger. Marshall already lists a USB-C cable in the box, and Bose’s cited specification page does not establish a comparable contents list. Compare what you will actually use, including shipping, tax and return terms.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Verify the model name. The Bose listing should explicitly say “SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen),” and the Marshall listing should say “Emberton III.”
  2. Check the variant. Confirm whether a Bose listing is an SE version and whether a Brown Marshall unit is the one that includes the fastening strap.
  3. Match the battery claim to your use. Expect loud playback, cold weather and an aging battery to reduce vendor-rated endurance.
  4. Decide whether you will add a second speaker. Bose stereo mode requires an identical 2nd Gen speaker; do not mix generations casually.
  5. Check local repair availability. Marshall describes parts and authorised service as market-dependent, so verify support in your region.
  6. Compare the final delivered price. Include tax, shipping and the exact color or variant before calling either model a better value.
  7. Review the return window. Because the independent sound findings are family-level rather than an exact-generation test, a return option is valuable if the tuning does not suit your room.
  8. Inspect the charging port after outdoor use. Dry the speaker fully before connecting USB-C, regardless of its IP67 rating.

Bottom line

Marshall Emberton III is the better fit for endurance-focused buyers, stereo listeners and people who value multipoint, LE Audio readiness or documented repair options. Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) is the better fit for buyers who want Bose’s app and pairing modes, a balanced reported presentation and stronger high-volume behavior in the available independent comparison. Because the test generations are not confirmed and current prices were not compared, the evidence supports a priority-based choice—not a universal winner.

Which speaker has better battery life?

Marshall claims more than 32 hours for Emberton III. Bose rates SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) for 12 hours at moderate volume and warns that maximum volume reduces runtime. These are vendor claims made under different conditions, not equivalent laboratory results.

Can two Bose SoundLink Flex speakers make a stereo pair?

Bose lists stereo mode only with an identical SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) speaker. Do not assume a first-generation Flex or a different variant will pair in stereo.

Are both speakers waterproof?

Both manufacturers list IP67 protection. Marshall additionally specifies submersion at 1 metre (3 feet) for up to 30 minutes. Dry either speaker and its charging port before connecting a cable, and do not treat IP67 as protection from saltwater, impact or every kind of damage.

Does the Marshall Emberton III include a strap?

Marshall says the fastening strap is included with the Brown Emberton III variant only. Verify the exact color and box contents in the listing; the available specifications do not establish a universal strap accessory.

Which speaker is better for loud listening?

The independent family-level comparison reports less compression at maximum volume for Bose and a more balanced profile. It reports wider perceived soundstage, better directivity and stereo-content handling for the Marshall family. Because the exact generations tested are not confirmed, use these as directional findings rather than a definitive current-model ranking.

Do both speakers support phone calls?

Marshall lists a built-in microphone on Emberton III. Bose lists a microphone on non-SE SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) versions. Neither source provides an independent call-quality ranking.

Which model is better value for money?

There is no defensible value winner without current, comparable prices for the same generation, color and variant in your market. Compare the delivered price, return policy and any local repair availability before deciding.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy Emberton III for its longer claimed endurance, Marshall’s multipoint and LE Audio readiness, stereo-content handling and possible repair support. Buy SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) for Bose app and pairing features, a more balanced reported sound and better high-volume behavior in the available family-level comparison. Verify generation, variant and current local pricing before ordering.
