Market-cap-weighted and equal-weight S&P 500 funds own broadly the same companies, but they assign influence differently. A conventional S&P 500 fund weights each stock by its float-adjusted market capitalization, so the largest companies drive more of the fund’s movement. An equal-weight fund targets the same weight for each constituent at its rebalance reference date, giving smaller companies much more influence relative to their market value. That choice changes concentration, trading and portfolio behavior; it does not establish that either approach will produce higher future returns.
The difference in one table
| Feature | Market-cap-weighted S&P 500 approach | Equal-weight S&P 500 approach |
|---|---|---|
| Constituent set | The S&P 500 companies, subject to the index’s eligibility and maintenance rules. | Generally the same constituent set at a given point, with a different weighting rule. |
| How a stock’s weight is set | Float-adjusted market capitalization: larger publicly available equity values receive larger weights. | Each constituent receives the same target weight at the index’s rebalance reference date. |
| Influence of the largest companies | High. A few very large companies can account for a substantial share of daily movement. | Lower relative influence because each company starts with the same target weight. |
| Influence of smaller constituents | Lower, because their market values are smaller. | Higher relative to their market capitalization. |
| What happens between rebalances | Weights move as prices and shares outstanding change under the index methodology. | Prices make weights drift away from equality until the next rebalance restores the targets. |
| Rebalancing evidence | S&P Dow Jones Indices lists quarterly rebalancing for the standard S&P 500. | Equal weights are established at the rebalance reference date; the methodology generally follows the standard index except for weighting. |
| Fund expenses and matched returns | Not established by the cited sources for a current, paired comparison. | Not established by the cited sources for a current, paired comparison. |
The standard index’s weighting description is published by S&P Dow Jones Indices. The equal-weight construction is described in the S&P U.S. Indices Methodology and in an SEC filing describing the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index.

How market-cap weighting works
Float-adjusted value determines influence
Market capitalization is a company’s share price multiplied by its shares outstanding. The S&P 500 uses a float-adjusted version, which is designed to represent the value of shares available to public investors rather than every share that exists. In simplified form, a constituent’s index weight is its float-adjusted market value divided by the float-adjusted market value of all constituents.
This is a proportional rule, not an equal-dollar rule. If Company A is worth twice as much as Company B under the index’s float-adjusted calculation, Company A receives roughly twice the weight, all else equal. A fund tracking the index therefore holds more dollars in the largest companies and fewer dollars in the smallest ones.

Prices change the mix without a scheduled equalization
Suppose one constituent rises sharply while another is flat. The rising stock becomes a larger percentage of the total index because its market value has increased. A market-cap-weighted portfolio does not need to sell the winner merely to keep every company at a preset percentage. Corporate actions, changes in shares available to investors and index maintenance rules can also alter weights, but the defining feature remains proportional market value.
The standard S&P 500 page identifies quarterly rebalancing. That does not mean the index is reset to identical weights every quarter; it means the index is reviewed and rebalanced according to its published rules. Between those events, market movements naturally change each company’s percentage.
Why the largest names matter more
When a large constituent moves, the index feels more of that move because the stock represents a larger fraction of the portfolio. The reverse is also true: a small constituent can have an excellent or poor trading day yet make only a modest contribution to the index’s aggregate result. This is a mechanical consequence of weighting, not a forecast about which company or size segment will outperform.

The same companies can have very different influence
The S&P 500 Equal Weight Index is generally calculated and maintained like the standard S&P 500 except for its weighting. At the rebalance reference date, each constituent receives the same target percentage. If there are 500 constituents, the mathematical target is approximately one five-hundredth for each, although the exact number of constituents and implementation details can change under index rules.
Equal weighting therefore gives a smaller company a larger position than it would receive in a market-cap-weighted index, while reducing the position assigned to the biggest companies. It does not remove the companies from the S&P 500 or create a separate list of small-cap stocks; it changes only how the constituent set is allocated.

Equality is a point-in-time target
Equal weights are set as of the rebalance reference date, not maintained continuously after every price tick. If one stock rises faster than the others, its portfolio percentage increases. If it falls, its percentage decreases. At the next rebalance, the index trades toward equal target weights again.
This creates a systematic need to trim constituents that have become relatively larger and add to those that have become relatively smaller. The amount of trading depends on price moves, corporate actions, additions and deletions, and the index’s implementation rules. A fund may not execute every index adjustment at exactly the same price or time, so a fund’s return can differ from the index even before fees.
Equal weight is not a promise of equal returns
Giving every constituent the same starting weight does not make their returns equal. Companies can have very different price changes, dividends and corporate events. Equal weighting controls the allocation at the rebalance date; it cannot control what happens afterward.
What the weighting choice changes for an investor
Concentration
Market-cap weighting concentrates more of the portfolio in the companies with the highest float-adjusted values. If those companies dominate market gains, the market-cap index can rise faster than an equal-weight version. If they lag, the same concentration can hurt relative performance. Equal weighting spreads each rebalance’s starting allocation across all constituents, reducing the direct effect of any one very large company.
Lower top-company concentration does not mean low risk. Equal-weight funds still hold equities in every constituent and remain exposed to broad market declines. A wide decline across many companies can reduce both approaches at the same time.

Company-size exposure
Equal weighting increases the allocation to smaller S&P 500 constituents relative to their market values. Market-cap weighting does the opposite. This size exposure emerges from the formula; it is not a separate promise that the equal-weight index will behave like a dedicated small-cap index.
Industry and sector mix
Because companies within an industry vary in size, changing the weighting formula can change how much influence an industry has in the overall portfolio. The equal-weight version gives a smaller company in a heavily represented industry the same starting weight as a much larger company in that industry. The resulting sector percentages can therefore differ from those of the market-cap index and can change at each rebalance. Check the current holdings and sector files if that distinction matters to your allocation; the index methodology itself does not guarantee a fixed sector mix.
Rebalancing and turnover
Equalization requires trades when constituent weights drift. Those trades can create more portfolio turnover than simply allowing market values to determine weights, although the actual turnover of a particular fund depends on its implementation, the size of market moves and changes in the index. Do not assume a fixed turnover number without the fund’s prospectus or fact sheet.
Turnover can matter in a taxable account because selling an appreciated holding may realize a gain. Tax treatment depends on the account, the investor’s basis and applicable law; an index rule alone cannot determine an individual’s tax bill. In a retirement account, the tax consequences may differ, but the fund’s trading still affects its net asset value and expenses.
Index methodology versus the fund you buy
An index is a calculation; a fund is a vehicle
The S&P 500 and the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index are benchmarks. An ETF or mutual fund attempts to track one of them by holding securities, using sampling or full replication, and handling cash, corporate actions and trading costs. The fund’s result can differ from the index because of management fees, operating expenses, transaction costs, taxes, timing and securities-lending revenue.

SPY as a standard-index example
State Street’s official SPY page says the fund seeks, before expenses, to correspond generally to the price and yield performance of the S&P 500 Index. “Generally” is important: that objective is not a guarantee of an exact match, and it does not supply a current, matched comparison with an equal-weight fund.
When evaluating an equal-weight product, identify the exact benchmark name, whether the fund uses full replication or sampling, its rebalance implementation and its published expense ratio. Two funds can follow similar-sounding indexes yet have different holdings, cash practices, fees and tracking results.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare expenses and performance without misleading yourself
The available methodology sources establish the weighting difference, but they do not provide same-date expense ratios and total-return figures for a conventional and equal-weight fund. A responsible comparison must therefore be built from current official documents rather than a single headline number.
| Comparison item | What to collect | Why the detail matters |
|---|---|---|
| Expense ratio | The current prospectus or fact sheet for each specific fund, including the document date. | A fee quoted for one share class, waiver period or date may not describe another product or the current recurring cost. |
| Return period | The same start date, end date and measurement interval for both funds. | Different windows can reverse the apparent winner. |
| Return convention | Price return or total return; before or after expenses. | Price return excludes dividends, while total return includes their reinvestment under the provider’s convention. |
| Benchmark | The exact index tracked by each fund. | “S&P 500” and “S&P 500 Equal Weight” are not interchangeable benchmarks. |
| Trading and taxes | Turnover information, bid-ask spread, premium/discount history and account type. | These factors affect an investor’s realized result beyond the published index return. |
A repeatable comparison procedure
- Open the latest official fact sheet and prospectus for one market-cap fund and one equal-weight fund.
- Record each fund’s benchmark, expense ratio, replication method, distribution policy and document date.
- Choose one end date and one period, such as one year or five years, and use that exact window for both.
- Record whether each reported figure is a price return or total return and whether it is before or after expenses.
- Compare the fund returns with their own benchmarks to assess tracking, rather than declaring a winner from unlike figures.
- Review holdings and concentration on the same date. Weight differences can change as markets move, so an old holdings file may not describe today’s portfolio.
A simple illustration of weight drift
Consider four hypothetical constituents and ignore fees, dividends and changes in the constituent list. An equal-weight index begins with 25% in each company. If one company doubles while the other three do not move, that holding becomes 40% of the portfolio’s market value: its original 25 units become 50, while the other holdings remain 25 units each, for a 125-unit total. The index is no longer equal-weighted until a rebalance trades it back toward 25% targets.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA market-cap-weighted index would not start from 25% each. It would begin with percentages based on each company’s float-adjusted market value, and the doubled company would gain influence automatically because its market value is now larger. The example demonstrates the mechanics only; it is not a forecast or a historical performance claim.

Questions to ask before choosing an approach
Do you want the market’s size-based allocation?
A market-cap fund follows the allocation that results from publicly traded value. It requires no thesis that smaller constituents deserve larger positions and lets successful companies become larger parts of the index as their market values rise.
Do you deliberately want less top-company concentration?
An equal-weight fund may fit an investor who specifically wants each constituent to have comparable influence at rebalancing. That choice also means accepting more exposure to smaller constituents and the trading required to restore equal targets.
Can you tolerate benchmark differences?
Because the two indexes weight the same broad universe differently, their returns can diverge substantially over a chosen period. Selecting equal weight is not merely selecting a cheaper or more diversified version of the standard index; it is selecting a different exposure.
Which account will hold the fund?
In a taxable account, distributions, realized gains and fund turnover can affect after-tax results. In a tax-advantaged account, those considerations may operate differently, but fees, spreads and tracking remain relevant. Consult current fund documents and a qualified tax professional for personal consequences.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling the standard index “equal.” The S&P 500 is float-adjusted market-cap weighted; equal weighting is a separate index construction.
- Assuming equal means continuously fixed. Equal targets apply at the rebalance reference date. Prices cause drift between rebalances.
- Treating the constituent list as permanently identical. The indexes can change constituents under their maintenance rules. “Same companies” describes the relationship at a given point, not a perpetual guarantee.
- Using price return for one fund and total return for the other. Dividends and reinvestment conventions must match.
- Comparing a fund’s return with the wrong benchmark. A market-cap fund should be assessed against its standard S&P 500 benchmark; an equal-weight fund should be assessed against the equal-weight benchmark it actually tracks.
- Assuming a lower share price means a smaller economic position. Share price alone says nothing about portfolio weight; the index rule and fund holdings determine the allocation.
- Assuming equal weight guarantees better diversification. It reduces the influence of the largest constituents at rebalancing, but all holdings remain equity investments and can fall together.
- Quoting an old fee or return as current. Fees, waivers, holdings and results are date-sensitive. Use the provider’s current documents and preserve the document date.
Where to verify the rules
For the standard index’s construction and maintenance, consult S&P Dow Jones Indices’ S&P 500 page. The broader rules are in the S&P U.S. Indices Methodology. The equal-weight description and its relationship to the standard index are set out in this SEC filing. For the standard-index ETF example, see State Street’s SPY page. An additional S&P 500 overview is available at this S&P Dow Jones Indices page.
These sources explain how the benchmarks are built. They do not, by themselves, provide a current paired expense and performance ranking for two particular funds. That comparison requires the funds’ own dated disclosures and matching return conventions.
