Among the three Mario Kart releases this comparison can assess, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe ranks first, Mario Kart World second, and the original Mario Kart 8 third. That is an editorial ranking—not a definitive list of every Mario Kart game. The available evidence does not establish a complete, authoritative set of entries across console, handheld, arcade, mobile, and real-world releases, so calling these three “every game” would be misleading.
What this ranking covers—and what it doesn’t
This ranking is limited to Mario Kart 8 (the Wii U game), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (the Switch edition), and Mario Kart World (the Switch 2 game). Nintendo Life’s catalog is useful for seeing the franchise’s breadth across platform categories, but it does not by itself settle which releases count as distinct games for an exhaustive ranking. Arcade releases, Mario Kart Tour, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, and enhanced editions therefore cannot be silently omitted or folded into a claim that this list covers every game.

The order is editorial judgment, not a series-wide critical consensus. It weighs course offering and variety, modes, handling and item dynamics, replay value, accessibility, and each game’s character-and-vehicle experience. The available comparisons are strongest for the two Switch-era packages; there is much less comparable evidence here for the original Wii U release.

How the current comparison differs
| Game | Platform and structure | Course or racer figures | Evidence and context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mario Kart 8 | Wii U; first released May 30, 2014 | Course total: not stated in the cited GameSpot listing | GameSpot lists Nintendo as developer and publisher, and records its review score as 8. That is one outlet’s score, not a cross-publication consensus. |
| Mario Kart 8 Deluxe | Switch; traditional Grand Prix structure, as characterized by TechRadar | Nintendo says the Booster Course Pass adds 48 courses, producing a 96-course offering. TechRadar’s comparison gives 12 racers for 8 Deluxe. | The 96-course figure is for the package including the pass, not the base game alone. TechRadar’s racer comparison is in the context of its comparison with World’s Knockout Tour. |
| Mario Kart World | Switch 2; connected-road structure, Free Roam, and Knockout Tour, as characterized by TechRadar | TechRadar reports 24 racers in Knockout Tour. A comparable course total is not stated in the cited comparison. | The format and handling observations are one reviewer’s analysis, not a series-wide verdict. |
The ranking, from worst to best
3. Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)
The original Mario Kart 8 lands third here because the comparison evidence favors the later Deluxe edition as the more expansive version of this entry. GameSpot records a review score of 8 for Mario Kart 8 and 9 for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe; those figures are GameSpot’s scores only, not universal ratings. The available evidence does not support a detailed claim about how the original’s individual tracks, modes, or handling compare with every other release in the series.
#1 Best Overall
- Hit the road with the definitive version of Mario Kart 8 and play anytime, anywhere! Race your friends or battle them in a revised battle mode on new and returning battle courses
- Play locally in up to 4-player multiplayer in 1080p while playing in TV Mode. Every track from the Wii U version, including DLC, makes a glorious return
- Plus, the Inklings appear as all-new guest characters, along with returning favorites, such as King Boo, Dry Bones, and Bowser Jr.
- Players can choose a new Smart Steering feature which makes driving and staying on the track easy for novice players and kids even at 200cc
2. Mario Kart World (Switch 2)
World earns second for taking the bigger structural risk. TechRadar’s January 30, 2026 comparison highlights its connected roads, new movement options, Free Roam, and Knockout Tour. Those features give it a more open and mechanically varied identity than a conventional Grand Prix-focused package. TechRadar also characterizes World’s handling as more punishing than 8 Deluxe’s, a meaningful trade-off for players who prioritize approachability and predictable racing over novelty.
Its second place is not a claim that the new format is worse in every respect. It reflects a judgment that the broader, more familiar package of 8 Deluxe is the stronger all-around recommendation on the evidence available here, while World is the more adventurous alternative.
Rank #2
- Nuevos personajes: Inkling, Rey Boo, Huesitos y Bowsy
- Inclusi n de circuitos in ditos en el modo batalla
- Los pilotos cuentan con el volante inteligente, que ayuda a no salirse de la pista
- Hasta 8 pilotos en partidas de multijugador local
1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch)
8 Deluxe takes the top spot for the strength of its expanded classic package: it pairs a traditional race structure with the largest course offering documented in this comparison. Nintendo says the Booster Course Pass adds 48 new and returning courses, bringing the complete package to 96. That total belongs to the game plus pass, not the base edition. Nintendo also describes Smart Steering as a way for beginners to race without falling off the track, which helps make the game an easier entry point without serving as a broad accessibility certification.

Is Mario Kart World better than Mario Kart 8 Deluxe?
It depends on what “better” means to you. In TechRadar’s comparison, World is the more exploratory and mechanically varied game, with Free Roam and Knockout Tour. 8 Deluxe is the more traditional choice, and the reviewer describes it as tighter and more forgiving. In Knockout Tour, TechRadar reports 24 racers for World, compared with 12 racers for 8 Deluxe in its comparison context; the larger field changes the scale of that mode rather than establishing a like-for-like count for every race type.
Choose World if you want its connected-road approach and new modes. Choose 8 Deluxe if you want a classic Grand Prix-centered structure, Smart Steering, and the 96-course package with the Booster Course Pass.
Why this is not a ranking of every Mario Kart game
A genuinely exhaustive list needs a stated rule for whether “game” includes arcade releases, mobile titles, real-world or hardware-adjacent experiences, and enhanced editions as separate entries. It also needs comparable evidence for those releases. The available catalog helps identify platform breadth, but it does not establish a canonical inclusion rule or provide a comparable review dataset across all those categories. Ranking unassessed games anyway would imply a level of coverage and certainty this comparison cannot support.
