Marine Snow vs. Dissolved Organic Carbon: How the Ocean Stores Carbon

Marine snow and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) are two connected but different ways the ocean moves and retains carbon. Marine snow is particulate material that sinks from sunlit waters, carrying some phytoplankton-derived carbon into the ocean interior. DOC is carbon-containing material dissolved in seawater, ranging from compounds microbes consume within hours or days to refractory molecules that can remain in deep water for centuries or longer. Neither pathway automatically equals permanent storage: the outcome depends on depth, remineralization, circulation and, for particles, whether carbon reaches sediments.

What marine snow and DOC mean

Phytoplankton use photosynthesis to turn dissolved carbon dioxide into organic matter in the sunlit surface ocean. That carbon can move through food webs, sink as particles, remain suspended, or enter the dissolved pool. The two terms describe different physical forms and dominant processes.

Marine snow is sinking particulate carbon

Marine snow is a continuously forming mixture of dead plankton, discarded tissues, fecal pellets, mucus, mineral grains and other debris. Aggregates can be visible as flakes or clumps, but the category also includes smaller particulate organic material that sinks through the water column. The carbon in these particles is generally described as particulate organic carbon (POC), not carbon dioxide itself.

Particle size and density influence sinking speed. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) explains that particles may take days to weeks, and sometimes months, to reach the seafloor. A large, dense fecal pellet can descend faster than a fragile aggregate. Ballast minerals can also increase density, while microbial decomposition and animal feeding can make a particle smaller or less dense as it sinks.

DOC is a spectrum of dissolved compounds

Dissolved organic carbon is organic material in seawater that passes through the operational filter used to define the dissolved fraction. It is not one chemical substance. The pool includes rapidly consumed labile DOC, semi-labile material with longer residence times, and refractory DOC that resists microbial breakdown.

A water sample can therefore contain DOC that disappears quickly after production alongside molecules transported through the deep ocean for very long periods. “Dissolved” does not mean “permanent.” Reactivity, microbial access, temperature, oxygen conditions and the circulation history of the water mass all affect how long a DOC molecule remains.

How the marine-snow route exports carbon

1. Carbon is fixed near the surface

In the euphotic zone, phytoplankton assimilate dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) through photosynthesis. Some of the resulting organic matter is eaten by zooplankton and larger organisms. Some is released directly as dissolved compounds, while some becomes particulate material when organisms die, shed tissue or produce fecal pellets.

2. Particles aggregate and begin to sink

Sticky biological polymers help small pieces collide and form aggregates. Feeding events can package many cells into dense pellets. These products constitute the gravitational component of the biological carbon pump. WHOI also describes mixing and the movement of migrating animals as complementary routes that transfer carbon away from the surface; marine snow is not the only pump mechanism.

3. The twilight zone recycles much of the material

As particles pass through roughly 100 to 1,000 metres, microbes and animals consume them. Respiration converts organic carbon back to DIC, which can later return toward the surface. Zooplankton may fragment aggregates, and fish or other migrants can transport carbon downward when they feed near the surface and respire or excrete at depth.

Consequently, “exported below the surface” is not the same as “stored for millennia.” The depth at which respiration occurs determines how effectively circulation keeps that carbon away from atmospheric exchange. An Annual Review of Marine Science assessment describes biological-pump sequestration times ranging from months to millennia, depending on the depth and subsequent isolation of the carbon.

4. A small fraction may reach the seafloor

Material that survives the water column can settle into sediments. Burial is a distinct endpoint from deep-water residence. NOAA/AOML reported in 2024 that less than 1% of particulate organic carbon generated through the biological carbon pump reaches the deep-ocean seafloor on geologic timescales. That estimate concerns eventual sediment burial; it does not say that less than 1% of exported carbon enters the deep ocean or that DOC storage is similarly limited.

How DOC can store carbon

Fast turnover and microbial use

Labile DOC is readily consumed by bacteria and other microbes. Its carbon may be incorporated into microbial biomass, respired to DIC, transferred to particles, or released in new dissolved compounds. Because this processing can happen rapidly, a pulse of DOC production is not automatically a long-lived sink.

The microbial carbon pump

The microbial carbon pump (MCP) is a framework for explaining how microbial metabolism and ecological interactions transform organic matter into compounds that are harder to degrade. Microbes can alter the chemical structure of labile material, and some products become refractory DOC. Those compounds may persist while the water carrying them circulates through the ocean interior.

The MCP does not mean that every bacterial transformation creates permanent storage. A refractory molecule can eventually be consumed, chemically altered or returned to the atmosphere when its water mass upwells. Residence time depends on both molecular reactivity and circulation.

Long-lived DOC is a fraction, not the whole pool

Hansell’s review of recalcitrant DOC emphasizes a spectrum of reactivities rather than a single lifetime for marine DOC. When reporting a DOC inventory, distinguish total DOC from the refractory fraction and from newly produced material that is expected to remain for a stated period.

Marine snow and DOC compared

Axis Marine snow Dissolved organic carbon
Physical form Particulate organic material sinking through the water column. Organic material dissolved in seawater.
Main process Gravitational export, modified by feeding, microbial breakdown, mixing and animal migration. Production, consumption, microbial transformation and transport with water masses.
How storage occurs A fraction reaches depths from which it is unlikely to return to the atmosphere on human timescales; the longest-term endpoint is sediment burial. Refractory fractions resist degradation and can persist in deep water.
Primary limits Remineralization and consumption during sinking; particle size, density and ocean conditions. Reactivity, microbial use, circulation and environmental conditions.
Timescale framing Months to millennia, depending on where respiration occurs; geologic storage requires burial. From rapid consumption to long-lived fractions; no single lifetime applies to all DOC.
Measurement caution Separate surface export, transfer below a chosen depth and seafloor burial. Separate bulk inventory, refractory DOC and net long-lived production.

What “sequestration” means in practice

Carbon sequestration needs a stated timescale or operational definition. WHOI commonly uses 500 metres as a general threshold for biological-pump sequestration: carbon carried below that depth is less likely to exchange with the atmosphere quickly. The 500-metre convention is an explanatory rule of thumb, not a universal boundary for every water mass, season or carbon pathway.

Deep residence and geological burial are different. Carbon respired at 600 metres may remain isolated for years to centuries before circulation returns it to the surface. Carbon buried in sediments can be isolated on geological timescales. Calling both outcomes simply “stored carbon” hides the distinction that determines climate relevance.

How much carbon moves through each route?

Published values cannot be compared as if they were efficiencies measured over the same pathway. Each number below has its own definition and endpoint.

Reported value What it describes How to interpret it
Upwards of 12 billion metric tons of carbon per year WHOI’s multimedia biological-pump page describes this amount as transported out of surface waters. It refers to an early export stage, not carbon that all reaches the abyss or sediments.
Roughly 10% The same WHOI page says about this share exits the twilight zone. It is a stage-specific figure, not a universal fraction reaching seafloor sediments.
Less than 1% NOAA/AOML’s 2024 sediment-trap account describes the share of POC generated through the biological carbon pump that reaches the deep-ocean seafloor on geologic timescales. This is an endpoint-specific burial estimate, not a measure of all deep-ocean transfer or DOC persistence.
0.2 Pg C per year A 2015 Progress in Oceanography review proposed this as a first global-ocean estimate for MCP production of DOC with a mean lifetime greater than 100 years. It is a review estimate based on stated concepts and assumptions, not a direct global census.

The numbers should never be added together. The biological and microbial pumps interact, and the same carbon can change form along the way. A particle can dissolve into DOC; microbial processing can turn dissolved material into biomass or new particles; and respiration can return either pathway to DIC.

Why accounting can double-count carbon

A single carbon atom may be counted first as surface production, later as sinking POC, then as DOC after dissolution and finally as refractory DOC after microbial processing. Summing gross fluxes from each label would count transformations as if they were separate carbon supplies.

A 2015 review of the microbial carbon pump proposed a “first-time sequestration” criterion to reduce this problem. In practical terms, define the accounting boundary before calculating a total: are you measuring export from the surface, transfer below 500 metres, refractory DOC production, or sediment burial? Report the source year, pool definition, depth and endpoint beside every number.

A current finding about marine-snow chemistry

A WHOI release dated March 11, 2026, summarized work by researchers from WHOI, MIT and Rutgers. The study reported that bacteria living on marine snow can dissolve calcium carbonate, a mineral that provides ballast. By changing the local chemistry around a particle, this activity could alter how deeply that particle sinks and helps explain calcium-carbonate dissolution at relatively shallow depths despite surrounding conditions that might otherwise preserve the mineral.

The finding identifies a microbial process operating on sinking particles. It does not provide a newly quantified net change in the global biological pump. As Benedict Borer, assistant professor of marine and coastal sciences at Rutgers University and the study’s lead author, said in the WHOI release: Our findings show that microbes living on sinking particles can reshape the chemistry of their immediate environment.

How scientists measure these pathways

Sediment traps and particle observations

Sediment traps collect sinking material at selected depths, allowing researchers to measure particle flux and chemical composition. Comparing traps at multiple depths reveals how quickly material is remineralized as it sinks. Results depend on trap design, currents, particle swimmers and the time interval sampled, so a trap measurement is tied to its depth and method.

DOC concentration and reactivity tests

DOC measurements usually report a bulk concentration. Additional incubation, chemical and radiocarbon approaches are needed to distinguish rapidly consumed, semi-labile and refractory fractions or to estimate apparent ages. A high DOC inventory alone does not prove high long-term sequestration.

Models and sparse observations

Ocean-carbon models combine observations with circulation and ecosystem assumptions. NOAA’s Ocean Carbon Observing Science Plan for fiscal years 2025–2035 notes the scarcity of sustained observations of the biological carbon pump. Sparse sampling makes it difficult to resolve seasonal blooms, storms, regional particle hotspots and the depth at which respiration occurs.

How to follow one parcel of carbon

  1. Identify the starting form. Photosynthesis begins with DIC in sunlit water. Record whether the carbon is being tracked as newly fixed organic matter, POC or DOC.
  2. Track its first transfer. Note whether it enters a sinking aggregate, a fecal pellet, dissolved exudates or another pathway. These are not interchangeable measurements.
  3. Mark the depth reached. Surface export, exit from the twilight zone, passage below 500 metres and arrival at the seafloor are separate milestones.
  4. Record remineralization. If microbes or animals respire the carbon, it becomes DIC again. The depth of that conversion determines how long the carbon is isolated.
  5. Check for transformation. Dissolution can move POC into DOC; microbial processing can make some DOC more refractory; aggregation can move dissolved or cellular carbon back into particles.
  6. Assign a timescale. State whether the claim concerns days, seasons, decades, centuries, millennia or geological burial.

Common misunderstandings

“All marine snow reaches the deep ocean”

Most sinking material is consumed or respired before it reaches the abyss. Sinking is a transport process, not a guarantee of permanent burial.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“DOC is just marine snow in liquid form”

DOC and marine snow are different physical phases with different measurement methods and dominant controls. They can exchange carbon, but one cannot be substituted for the other in a flux calculation.

“Dissolved means safe from the atmosphere”

Only some DOC is refractory, and deep water eventually circulates. A dissolved molecule can be consumed or upwelled; its storage time depends on chemistry and circulation.

“The 10% figure is the fraction buried in sediments”

WHOI’s roughly 10% value refers to carbon exiting the twilight zone in its pathway description. NOAA/AOML’s less-than-1% value concerns eventual seafloor arrival on geologic timescales. They describe different stages.

“Respired carbon disappears”

Respiration converts organic carbon to DIC rather than destroying the carbon atom. The conversion can delay atmospheric return when it occurs at depth, but it is not equivalent to sediment burial.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What determines which pathway matters more?

  • Particle architecture: size, density, mineral ballast and aggregation affect sinking speed and exposure time to grazers and microbes.
  • Biological processing: bacterial enzymes, zooplankton feeding and migrant animals determine how much POC survives to depth.
  • Water-mass circulation: residence time and upwelling govern how long both deep DIC and refractory DOC remain isolated.
  • Chemical reactivity: DOC composition controls whether microbes consume it quickly or leave it in the refractory pool.
  • Depth of remineralization: carbon respired near the surface has a shorter isolation time than carbon respired in the deep ocean.
  • Observation coverage: sparse, short-term measurements make global extrapolation uncertain.

Bottom line

Marine snow is the ocean’s visible gravitational conveyor: it exports particulate carbon downward, but much of that carbon is recycled in the twilight zone. DOC is a chemically diverse dissolved reservoir in which microbial processing can create refractory compounds that persist for long periods. The pathways connect through dissolution, aggregation, microbial metabolism and respiration, yet they are not interchangeable. To decide whether carbon is genuinely sequestered, specify its form, depth, endpoint and expected lifetime—and never combine pathway estimates without checking for double counting.
