March of Giants is a free-to-play 4v4 MOBA where you fight as a Giant while commanding Soldiers and deploying Battleworks. For beginners, the key is to look beyond your own combat: lanes are fronts to advance or defend, the spaces between them affect map control, and objectives are territory your team must judge when to contest.
How a match works: fight, command, and shape the battlefield
Ubisoft describes March of Giants as a tactical multiplayer online battle arena in which players fight through lanes, command battalions, and deploy Battleworks. Those structures include trenches, tanks, turrets, and bunkers. The result combines lane-based combat with real-time strategy and team coordination, rather than making the Giant’s personal fight the whole game. Ubisoft’s game overview and acquisition announcement describe that broad format.

The March of Giants Development Team puts the distinction this way: “Giants are powerful combatants on their own, but they’re also commanders within a much larger battle.” In practice, keep track of three connected layers: what your Giant can do, how Soldiers are moving and fighting, and what Battleworks or routes are doing to the front.

What should I do in my lane?
Think of a lane as a front to push or defend, not simply a path to stay in. Ubisoft’s phrasing is that “Lanes become fronts to advance and defend.” Your useful contribution may be holding ground, helping Soldiers advance, or responding when your team needs support on that front. The right choice depends on the situation, not a fixed lane assignment established in the available official material.

Look beyond the lane itself
Ubisoft says the spaces between lanes have become more important for progression and map control. That means tunnel vision can leave you out of position: pay attention to where teammates are moving and whether shifting between fronts could help the team. The official overview does not specify a complete map route, lane names, or a prescribed rotation path, so use the current map and in-game cues rather than assuming a standard MOBA layout.
Coordinate with Soldiers and Battleworks
Soldiers fight alongside Giants, while Battleworks can change how a front is contested. Notice whether your team’s forces are advancing or being held back, and consider how structures affect the space you are trying to control. Ubisoft says these systems have received further development since the September 2025 Closed Alpha, including a broader Soldier role and more interaction and counterplay for Battleworks. That is the studio’s account of design direction, not a substitute for checking current in-game mechanics.

When should our team take objectives?
Objectives represent valuable territory, but the available official sources do not establish a current, complete reward table, timer schedule, or capture-condition list. Check the descriptions in your current build for those details instead of relying on old Alpha information.

Ubisoft’s Closed Alpha retrospective said objective tuning and rewards at that time did not make it clear when teams should group for major objectives or take smaller camps to improve rotations. The studio said it was refining their role and impact. Treat that as a record of design iteration—not as evidence of the final objective rewards or current timing.

Make the decision with the team
Before committing, weigh the value shown in the game against what your team gives up by leaving a front. Consider how many teammates need to go, whether the objective could help your next rotation, and whether the lane you leave is at risk. These are decision questions, not a claim that one objective type is always better: the current in-game reward and the match situation should guide the call.
Which team role should I play?
The official sources reviewed do not confirm a fixed lane-role chart or a required tank, carry, and support lineup. Do not assume that each lane has a prescribed occupant or that familiar MOBA labels map directly onto this game. Ubisoft says itemization has expanded to support more specialized builds and different ways to play each Giant, which also argues against treating a role as immutable.

A practical way to decide what to do is to ask what the team needs now:

- Territory: help the team contest an objective when its current value justifies the commitment.
- Battlefield support: coordinate around Soldiers and Battleworks rather than focusing only on Giant-versus-Giant combat.
- Movement between fronts: watch the spaces between lanes and move when doing so helps the team’s map control.
This is a flexible way to think about responsibilities, not an official class taxonomy. Choose a Giant and build based on the current roster, abilities, itemization, and team situation shown in-game.

What has changed, and when can you play?
Ubisoft says March of Giants has evolved since its September 2025 Closed Alpha: Soldiers have a broader role, Battleworks offer more interaction and counterplay, spaces between lanes matter more to progression and map control, and itemization supports more specialized builds. The studio also reports further work on the roster, map, interface, visuals, animations, and clarity. These statements describe the developer’s direction; they do not provide a patch-by-patch account of live mechanics.
In its development update, Ubisoft announced a YouTube Premiere and the start of the Pioneer Playtest for October 7, 2026. An October 2026 interview with Ubisoft Montréal described Early Access as planned for summer 2027. Both are plans that may change, so check Ubisoft’s current March of Giants updates for the latest schedule and access rules.
