What closed, and when?
Manulife Financial Corporation announced the agreement on August 5, 2026, and said closing was expected in the fourth quarter, subject to regulatory approvals. Its October 1, 2026, notice confirmed the transaction had closed and specified July 1, 2026, as its effective date. The close notice supersedes the earlier expectation of a future closing. The counterparty is Munich American Reassurance Company, identified by Manulife as Munich Re Life US and described as a Munich Re Group subsidiary.
What does the C$3.2 billion figure mean?
Manulife reported C$3.2 billion of IFRS reserves at an 80% quota share. The company defines the figure as an IFRS 17 current estimate comprising the present value of future cash flows, a risk adjustment, and the contractual service margin. Which risks moved to Munich Re?
Manulife described the arrangement as a full risk transfer for biometric risk on a standalone LTC block. In this context, biometric risk relates to policy experience such as morbidity and longevity. The company also said no assets would transfer. These descriptions do not establish that the policies themselves, their administration, or all associated risks moved to Munich Re; the public releases do not provide the full contract or detailed operational changes for policyholders.
What impact does Manulife expect?
The following figures were disclosed by Manulife Financial Corporation in 2026 alongside the August announcement. They are company-reported estimates, not independently measured outcomes; the October closing notice confirmed the deal but did not restate every estimate. - 24% lower cumulative LTC morbidity sensitivity: Manulife said the three LTC reinsurance transactions together would reduce its morbidity sensitivity by 24% upon closing. This is a sensitivity estimate, not a reported drop in claims or morbidity.
- Negative 5% cede: Manulife described the cede as modest and stated the figure on an IFRS basis.
- Approximately C$30 million in the first year: Manulife estimated an impact to core earnings and net income attributed to shareholders, with the impact declining over time. The company labels core earnings a non-GAAP measure.
How does this fit with Manulife’s earlier LTC deals?
Manulife called the Munich Re agreement its third LTC reinsurance transaction in under three years and its first involving a standalone LTC block. The company’s comparison identifies the following earlier deals:

What remains undisclosed?
Manulife’s public releases do not state the number of policies in the block, provide the complete reinsurance contract, or disclose Munich Re’s expected return. They also do not detail operational changes for policyholders. The reserve amount and statement of biometric risk transfer are not enough to infer those details.
Manulife CEO Phil Witherington characterized the transaction as a way to reduce the company’s risk profile and strengthen its business. That is the company’s strategic rationale, not an independent assessment of the transaction’s results.
