Manufacturers surveyed by Propel and Talker Research expect AI connected through the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to improve productivity, speed decisions and accelerate product development. Those figures describe expectations—not independently measured gains. Separate product and customer announcements show MCP integrations reaching production, including an ERP-connected finance workflow at packaging manufacturer Pamarco, but they do not prove that MCP alone produces the same results elsewhere.
What manufacturers expect MCP-connected AI to deliver
A 2026 survey commissioned by Propel and conducted by Talker Research asked 400 senior manufacturing professionals about anticipated benefits from MCP-connected AI. Respondents named three leading outcomes:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- 35% expected improved employee productivity.
- 34% expected faster decision-making.
- 31% expected faster product development.
The survey included professionals from high tech and electronics, industrial equipment, and medical device sectors. The percentages are respondents’ expectations, not measured productivity gains or evidence that MCP itself caused an improvement. Propel sells software with MCP capabilities, and the announcement does not fully establish the survey’s geography, sampling frame or questionnaire. Propel’s survey announcement provides the reported results.

Why MCP matters to manufacturing AI
MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is an integration protocol that lets AI clients and agents connect to tools and enterprise data. In manufacturing, that can mean giving an AI access to product lifecycle management (PLM) records, quality information or enterprise resource planning (ERP) data rather than relying only on a user’s prompt or disconnected documents.

Dual-band Wi-Fi 5 (2.4/5 GHz), Bluetooth 5.1, and high-speed headers for vision, audio, and display peripherals.
- Seamless Expansion & Connectivity: Features the classic UNO form factor for shields compatibility, an 8x13 LED matrix, and a Qwiic connector for easy expansion with Modulino nodes; power and connect via the USB-C connector.
- Intended Use & Development: The perfect platform for prototyping robotics or IoT projects, empowering innovators with a unified development experience to mix Arduino Sketches, Python scripts, and containerized AI models in a single interface.
The practical appeal is access to current, relevant records. The value still depends on whether the underlying data is accurate, whether the agent is allowed to read or change it, and whether its task is narrow enough to verify. As Propel CEO Ross Meyercord put it in the company’s August 2026 survey announcement: “If your product record is fragmented, outdated, or siloed, you’ve just given AI a faster path to bad answers.” That is a vendor executive’s assessment, but it captures a central implementation risk.

- 95% of surveyed IT respondents said secure connections between approved AI tools and PLM or quality management systems (QMS), with access controls and audit logging, were extremely or somewhat valuable.
- 86% of IT respondents rated replacing point-to-point integrations with a standardized MCP interface extremely or somewhat valuable; 84% valued centralized governance over what AI can access and do.
- 85% of marketing respondents rated AI assistance that combines engineering, quality and product details for launch materials extremely or somewhat valuable.
These are ratings of perceived value, not proof of benefits delivered in deployed workflows. The announcement also reports that product managers valued a consolidated view of product, customer, competitive and quality information. For marketing teams, the proposed use case is bringing together engineering and product details when specifications change late in development.
A separate Propel executive survey, published in August 2026, found that 91% of respondents said organizational interest in MCP had increased; 63% described the interest as dramatic or significant. More than 90% said their organizations had implemented MCP or expected to implement it within 12 months. That combined figure includes plans as well as implementations, so it is not an adoption rate. In the same survey, 49% ranked PLM as the top business system for AI agents to access through MCP, while 38% called PLM the most valuable information source for AI actions. These results are reported by Propel, which commissioned the surveys and sells PLM software. The executive survey announcement contains the figures.

How MCP-connected AI is being used in reported deployments
Propel’s PLM implementation
Propel announced production MCP connectivity for its PLM platform in June 2026. The company says external AI clients can query live product records and perform simple operations, while its platform can also connect to external MCP servers for supplier intelligence, component data and ERP records. This is Propel’s description of its product—not an independent assessment of its capabilities or outcomes.
Tech-Clarity president and founder Jim Brown, quoted in Propel’s announcement, said: “That requires AI tools to work with trusted, accurate product data, wherever those tools are being used.” Propel’s product announcement describes the connectivity.

Pamarco’s ERP-connected finance agents
Microsoft’s September 2026 customer story describes Pamarco using agents built in Copilot Studio to connect to Dynamics 365 through the Dynamics 365 ERP MCP Server. The reported finance tasks include coordinating close activities, coding invoices, preparing reports and running recurring analyses. The agents have defined scopes and permissions, while human owners retain responsibility for decisions requiring judgment or review.

Microsoft says fewer than 5% of invoices needed manual coding during validation, and Pamarco reports freight coding success of around 95%. These are company- and vendor-reported figures from a customer story, not independent benchmarks or guaranteed outcomes for other manufacturers. Pamarco’s plans to consider sales, quoting, order entry, customer responses and vendor communications are future possibilities, not completed deployments.
Pamarco CIO Glyn Wilson described the intended workforce effect this way: “We don’t think about [AI] in terms of reducing headcount; it just means we can achieve more with our employees because they can skip repetitive tasks and focus on things that humans are better at.” Microsoft’s customer story gives the company’s account of the deployment.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
| Evidence | What it supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Propel/Talker Research survey of 400 senior manufacturing professionals | Respondents anticipate productivity, decision-speed and product-development benefits; they also value governed access to enterprise data. | That MCP has already produced those gains, or that the sample represents all manufacturers. |
| Propel’s PLM announcement | Propel says its production platform supports MCP connectivity to live PLM records and external MCP servers. | Independent verification of performance, accuracy or business impact. |
| Microsoft’s Pamarco customer story | A named company reports using scoped agents with an ERP MCP server for finance workflows and shares validation and automation estimates. | That the reported results will transfer to other plants, companies or tasks. |
The available accounts do not provide a controlled comparison across MCP vendors or protocols. MCP connectivity can make data and tools available to an AI agent; it cannot by itself ensure that records are correct, access is appropriately limited, actions are auditable or outputs are useful. The operational question is not simply whether an organization connects an agent, but what data it can reach, what it can do, and who checks consequential work.
