Don’t rewrite every manufacturer description by default. Put your editorial effort where it changes what a shopper can decide: product pages whose supplied copy is inaccurate, confusing, or silent on a real buying question, and category pages that help people compare an assortment. Google does not treat duplicate manufacturer copy as a spam violation, so the case for rewriting rests on usefulness and page purpose, not on avoiding a penalty.

What duplicate copy actually does in search

Google’s guidance on duplicate content states that “Some duplicate content on a site is normal and it’s not a violation of Google’s spam policies.” Similar pages can still be grouped together, and Google then chooses one representative URL, called the canonical, using signals that include which page it judges most complete and useful for searchers. Canonical hints from a site are not binding; Google can pick a different URL.

Copied descriptions therefore have three practical effects: they can influence which URL represents a product group, they make the page less valuable to the person reading it, and they can spread crawling effort across near-identical pages. None of these amounts to an automatic demotion, and a rewrite does not guarantee a ranking gain. If you suspect a canonical problem, check which URL Google has selected for each product group before changing any copy.

Usefulness, not word count, decides what a page needs

Google’s helpful-content guidance asks whether a reader will finish the page feeling they have learned enough to reach their goal. The guidance also says Google has no preferred word count. A rewrite earns its place only if it answers a question the shopper actually has, such as fit, differences between models, compatibility, or trade-offs. Adding length to look thorough does not meet that test.

Product reviews and comparisons face a stricter version of the same rule. Google’s guidance favors pages that state how many products were tested, what the results were, and how the testing was done, ideally with supporting evidence such as photographs. If you did not test a product yourself, describe the work as a specification comparison or a manufacturer-data analysis. Do not imply hands-on experience.

Category and product pages do different jobs

Treating these two page types as interchangeable is the most common reason teams waste writing time. Each one answers a different question, and the copy should follow that question.

Category pages: help people choose

Google’s ecommerce navigation guidance describes a path from menus to category pages, subcategory pages, and finally product pages, with crawlable links at each step. That structure helps search engines understand the site and find products. For shoppers, a category page is where they decide which type of product fits their situation. It can explain the criteria that separate the options, group models by use case, and link to the right product page. A category page that only repeats a list of names with generic introductions gives readers little reason to stay.

Product pages: confirm the specific item

A product page must identify and explain one particular item accurately. Google Merchant Center Help recommends accurate titles and descriptions, and suggests descriptions longer than 200 characters, organized into paragraphs or bullet points, with product highlights and details where they apply. That is guidance for product data in Merchant Center feeds, not a minimum word count for organic rankings and not an instruction to rewrite every description.

Google also recommends product structured data and Merchant Center feeds so that its systems can read product information and make pages eligible for richer search appearances. Eligibility does not guarantee that those features will appear.

Search snippets: write a summary for each page

Identical or similar meta descriptions across many pages add little when those pages appear in search results. Google recommends an accurate description for each page where practical. This is a separate task from rewriting the full manufacturer description. A short, page-specific summary can be written for each important URL even when the body copy stays largely as supplied.

Affiliate pages need more than copied catalog text

If your site earns commission from merchant links, the stakes are higher. Google’s guidance on thin affiliate pages identifies pages that reuse merchant product descriptions and reviews without adding original value as a weak pattern. The examples of value it gives include additional product information, original reviews, rigorous testing with ratings, clear product and category navigation, and comparisons. Affiliate links are allowed; copied catalog text on its own is the problem.

A practical allocation plan

The following order follows from the guidance above. It is an editorial approach, not a published Google formula.

Best Value
Teacher Record Book
  • Keep track of everything from attendance to test scores
  • Spiral bound
  • Measures 8-1/2" x 11"
  1. Map each page’s role. Decide which category page answers an assortment or comparison question and which product page answers a question about one model. Do not let both pages carry the same generic text.
  2. Keep verified facts, add decision support. Retain the manufacturer’s specifications as supplied. Add what the manufacturer data does not say: who the product suits, what distinguishes it from close alternatives, what it works with, and what buyers should check. Verify every addition against reliable product data. Do not invent claims.
  3. Rewrite product descriptions selectively. Start with products where the copy is wrong, unclear, shared across models that differ in material ways, or unable to answer a common question. Leave accurate, clear descriptions alone.
  4. Build category pages around selection. Add the criteria that separate the products, short comparisons among them, and crawlable links to subcategories and products. Stop when the page answers the question. Do not add padding to reach a length target.
  5. Disclose any testing. If you publish a review or comparison, state what was tested, how many units or models were involved, and what the results were. If you did no hands-on testing, say so.

Where effort usually pays off

Question Rewriting product descriptions Improving category pages
Reader task Understand one product’s facts, fit, and limits Compare product types or models and choose one
Strongest reason to invest Supplied copy is inaccurate, hard to read, or misses a common buying question The category lacks orientation, selection criteria, or useful links
Main risk Rephrasing identical facts without adding anything, or introducing unsupported claims Generic filler that does not help anyone choose
Technical dependency The product page must be reachable through crawlable navigation Category and subcategory links show search engines how the site is organized
Evidence to gather Verified specifications, compatibility details, any real testing, recurring customer questions Assortment attributes, meaningful differences between products, how shoppers move through the category

No public source sets a universal split of writing time between these two page types. Your assortment size, the current quality of each page, and the questions customers ask should decide the balance.

How to judge whether a change worked

Measure each changed page against its own baseline before and after the edit, and allow enough time for search systems to re-crawl and re-evaluate the page. Useful signals include:

  • Search visibility and which URL Google reports as canonical for each product group
  • Click-through rate from search results on the rewritten pages
  • Time on page and movement from category pages into product pages
  • Conversions and the number of repeated customer questions about the same product

Google does not promise that any particular change will raise rankings, and no universal test period is published. Treat early movement as a hint, not a result, and compare against pages you left unchanged where possible.

The clearest place to start is the set of product pages that generate the most customer questions and the category pages that receive the most search traffic but produce the fewest product-page visits.
