Manchester City’s appeal rests in part on a disputed claim about where money for some sponsorship payments came from. City’s reported position is that an Abu Dhabi government body helped fund sponsors; an independent Premier League commission rejected that explanation and attributed most of the relevant sponsorship money to the club’s owner, Sheikh Mansour, through Abu Dhabi United Group (ADUG). The appeal is filed, but no outcome is established in the reporting available as of October 3, 2026.
What is Manchester City arguing in its appeal?
City says the commission’s decision contains material errors and that it has evidence supporting its case. In reporting on the appeal, the club’s position on the disputed sponsorship money is that an Abu Dhabi government body provided funding to sponsors from time to time, rather than ADUG supplying the money.
That is City’s appeal contention, not an established finding. The dispute concerns not only which companies made sponsorship payments to City, but also how those companies funded the payments and whether the commission was right about the source.
What did the commission find about the sponsorship payments?
Associated Press reported that the commission found Abu Dhabi sponsors paid £119.25 million of the £949.94 million recorded in City accounts as sponsorship. It attributed the remaining £830.69 million to ADUG. These are the commission’s figures as reported by AP, not figures independently re-audited by the news agency.

The commission rejected the government-funding explanation, describing it as “concocted well after the event” to disguise the source of the funding. That is the commission’s characterization, and it remains part of the appealed decision rather than an appeal ruling.
How do the competing accounts differ?
| Question | Commission’s reported finding | City’s reported appeal position |
|---|---|---|
| Who provided the disputed funding? | The commission attributed £830.69 million of the recorded sponsorship total to ADUG, according to AP’s report. | City’s reported argument is that an Abu Dhabi government body helped fund sponsors from time to time. |
| How did the money reach City? | The commission rejected City’s explanation and concluded it was designed to conceal the source. | The reported account describes government funding reaching sponsors, which then paid City; the complete appeal grounds are not established in the reporting. |
| Status | A finding by the independent commission, now under appeal. | A contention by City in an appeal with no reported outcome as of October 3, 2026. |
These distinctions matter: a sponsor’s ownership, the source of the sponsor’s funds, and the entity that paid a particular invoice are separate questions. Government ownership of a sponsor, by itself, does not establish who funded an individual sponsorship payment.

Why is Etihad’s 2015 statement relevant?
Etihad Airways said in a 2015 submission to the US Departments of Commerce, Transportation and State that the assertion the Abu Dhabi government paid for its Manchester City sponsorship was false, and that Etihad paid from its own liquidity. Sky Sports quoted the submission: “The assertion that the Abu Dhabi government paid for Etihad’s sponsorship of English Premier League football club Manchester City is equally false.”
That historical statement appears to conflict with the reported government-funding explanation. It is Etihad’s past position about its sponsorship, however, and does not by itself resolve every payment or agreement considered by the commission.

What has happened, and what remains unresolved?
The Premier League case dates to 2018. An independent commission issued findings in 2026, and City lodged an appeal. AP reported that the appeal hearing would remain private and confidential until publication of the outcome is permitted.
As of October 3, 2026, reporting did not establish the full appeal grounds, the panel’s treatment of the government-funding argument, or the final appeal ruling. The commission’s decision should not be described as the appeal result, and City’s account should not be presented as proven fact. Manchester City chief executive Ferran Soriano, quoted by AP from an internal staff video, denied the allegation: “The whole Premier League case against us is based on a single false accusation: that the owner’s personal money was somehow and secretly put into the club via some sponsors from Abu Dhabi. This is just not true.”
