Managed PostgreSQL and a custom API solve different problems, so an agent workload often needs both: a managed database for storage and operations, and an API when agents should invoke controlled business actions rather than issue arbitrary data requests. The real choice is how agents reach the database and what they are allowed to do.
What are you actually choosing?
A managed Postgres service hosts the database and takes on some database operations. It does not, by itself, define the interface an agent uses. A custom API is an application boundary: it can expose specific actions, enforce application rules, and coordinate work across systems. Those choices can be combined.
In practice, the alternatives are usually a managed database behind a narrow custom API, or a managed database exposed through a database or generated Data API boundary. The second can reduce custom API code for straightforward data operations, but it still needs deliberate access controls.
How do the two access patterns compare?
| Decision area | Managed Postgres plus a narrow custom API | Managed Postgres with a database or Data API boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Workflows | Application code can centralize validation, multi-step actions, and integrations. | Fits simpler operations; more involved workflows need database functions or another server-side mechanism. |
| Authorization | Authorize each API action and retain database roles and policies as defense in depth. | Requires explicit row-level security (RLS), policies, and least-privilege grants; privileged keys must stay server-side. |
| Connections | The API can reuse connections, but serverless API workers may still need a server-side pooler. | The calling runtime still determines the appropriate connection mode; transaction pooling has limitations. |
| Tenant isolation | Application checks can complement database controls; an API check alone need not be the only barrier. | RLS can isolate tenants in a shared database, with noisy-neighbor and tenant-attribution tradeoffs. |
| Operational work | Adds API code, deployment, monitoring, and security review; managed hosting still offloads some database operations. | Can mean less custom API code for simple data paths, but policies and the exposed surface still need ownership. |
| Performance and scale | Enables workload-specific query shaping, caching, and rate controls, while adding a service to operate. | Can keep simple paths direct, but database connections, query load, and policy correctness still need planning. |
Should agents access Postgres through an API?
Use a narrow custom API when an agent should request a business-level action—such as a validated workflow—instead of composing arbitrary queries. It is also a natural boundary when authorization depends on application context or an operation coordinates multiple systems. The API should expose only the actions the agent needs, not become a pass-through for unrestricted SQL.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Direct or generated database API access can be reasonable when the permitted operations are simple and the policies are explicit and tested. Supabase requires RLS and policies for frontend-style Data API access. Its secret and service-role keys bypass RLS, so they must not be exposed to a client or other untrusted runtime; see Supabase’s data security guidance.
Whichever boundary you choose, grant only the permissions required for the workload. Test that one tenant or agent cannot read or change data outside its intended scope. A custom API authorization check can be complemented by database controls rather than treated as their replacement.

How do I pool Postgres connections for serverless agents?
Choose connection handling for the process that actually connects to Postgres. A persistent backend can generally use direct connectivity or an application-side pool sized to the database connection budget. Serverless, edge, or horizontally scaling callers may create many short-lived connections, making a server-side pooler appropriate. Supabase documents connection options and limits, including its pooling modes, in its connection pooling and limits guide and database connection guide.
Do not assume every pooling mode behaves like a persistent session. Transaction pooling can have session-feature limitations, including prepared statements and query pipelining. Check the selected provider’s current connection-mode documentation against the driver’s behavior and the features the application uses before deploying.

What changes in a multi-tenant system?
Shared-database RLS can make tenant onboarding and operations simpler than managing a separate database for every tenant, but it does not isolate resource consumption. A noisy tenant can still affect others, and operators may need tenant-level instrumentation to identify who generated load. AWS describes these tradeoffs in its PostgreSQL pool model guidance.
Decide whether a shared database with RLS meets the product’s customer commitments and applicable regulatory requirements. The right isolation boundary depends on those commitments; they cannot be inferred from the fact that a workload is multi-tenant.

Can Postgres scale for agent workloads?
PostgreSQL can support very large systems, but published scale examples are evidence of what one engineered deployment achieved—not a capacity estimate for a new application. In its 2026 case study, OpenAI reported more than 10× growth in PostgreSQL load over the prior year and described a deployment serving a context of 800 million users with one Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server primary and nearly 50 read replicas across multiple regions. The account concerns a read-heavy system and extensive optimization; it is not a throughput guarantee for another workload. See OpenAI’s account of scaling PostgreSQL.
Agent traffic also needs workload-specific testing: concurrency, retries, expensive queries, and write bursts can behave very differently from ordinary read-heavy traffic. OpenAI’s account discusses overload cascades and distinct costs associated with heavy writes, so include retry behavior and write patterns in capacity planning rather than testing only a steady stream of simple reads.

How should you make the decision?
- Choose the database layer. Use managed Postgres if the team wants a managed database and the workload benefits from relational transactions and SQL. This choice does not determine the agent’s access boundary.
- Define the agent’s allowed actions. Put a narrow API between the agent and data when it should call business-level operations, needs application-specific authorization, or must coordinate workflows. Consider direct or generated database/API access for a limited, well-defined set of simple operations.
- Specify tenant and privilege boundaries. Decide whether shared-database RLS meets isolation expectations, use least privilege, and test policy boundaries. Keep secret and service-role credentials out of untrusted runtimes.
- Match connections to the runtime. For persistent services, plan a suitable direct connection or application pool. For serverless or edge callers, evaluate server-side pooling and verify transaction-mode limitations against the database driver and query behavior.
- Load-test the actual workload. Include realistic agent concurrency, retry patterns, query costs, and write bursts. Monitor database connection use and, for shared tenants, resource use by tenant.
- Compare the shortlisted providers against your requirements. Check the actual region, configuration, recovery objectives, contractual guarantees, and total cost. Pricing and SLA terms vary by provider and plan; no same-workload vendor comparison is established here.
