A Malaysian solo traveller who had been uncontactable after floods and landslides in Nepal presented himself at the Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu on Oct. 1, 2026. Embassy officials verified his identity and confirmed he was safe; he returned to Malaysia on Oct. 2. The Foreign Ministry’s Oct. 3 account said 54 Malaysians were still reported uncontactable.
What happened to the Malaysian traveller?
The traveller presented himself at the Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu, where officials verified his identity. Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry said he returned home the following day. Authorities have not disclosed his name or further personal details, citing privacy.
MASFIH spokesperson Dr Manivannan Rethinam said the traveller was reported to have been at Nagthali Viewpoint at 3:26 p.m. on Aug. 25, the day before the floods and landslides. MASFIH and subsequent reporting described 37 days of uncertainty before his safe return was confirmed. The available accounts do not establish his precise route or where he was on each intervening day.
Why was he out of contact?
MASFIH relayed information from the traveller’s family that damaged roads and bridges, as well as disruption to electricity, clean water and telecommunications after the Aug. 26 disaster, left him stranded and unable to make contact. The public accounts do not provide a day-by-day explanation of how he remained out of contact or how he reached Kathmandu.

What does “54 Malaysians uncontactable” mean?
The figure is the number of Malaysians the Foreign Ministry said remained reported as uncontactable in its Oct. 3 account, as reported by Malay Mail. It is a contact and verification status—not a count of confirmed deaths, injuries or people known to be physically lost. The ministry said it would verify each case separately through official channels.

These are dated snapshots from different reports; the Sept. 7 figure should not be treated as the current count. The Oct. 3 number concerns Malaysian nationals, not the wider disaster toll. Bernama’s Oct. 2 report said the floods and debris flows had claimed more than 1,450 lives and that thousands remained unaccounted for at the time of publication; that was a reported disaster-wide figure, not a final verified toll.

What happened after his return?
The Foreign Ministry said local authorities would record the traveller’s statement and that he would undergo a health assessment. No direct statement from him appears in the cited reports.
Manivannan told Bernama: “For MASFIH, this development is not merely a change in the number from 55 to 54. It is about a family finally being reunited with their loved one after 37 days of uncertainty.” The Star quoted him saying: “We are thankful that one of the Malaysians who was previously unaccounted for has returned to the family.”

How did Malaysia respond to the disaster?
NADMA’s Sept. 8 background report said an 11-member Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) had been deployed to Nepal on Sept. 5 to support Nepal-led operations, using high-capacity drones and specialised equipment. The same report described next-of-kin DNA collection and analysis, Mercy Malaysia humanitarian assessment work, and a US$1 million humanitarian-aid pledge by Malaysia’s prime minister. These are details of Malaysia’s wider response, not evidence that any of those efforts located this traveller.
Malay Mail reported the Foreign Ministry’s account that Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority announced on Sept. 30 that search-and-rescue operations had ended and transitioned to search-and-recovery. Malaysia said it would continue checking the remaining uncontactable cases through official channels.
