Start with the battery platform you own
Makita LXT and XGT are separate battery platforms. Makita describes batteries as compatible within their respective platform, so do not assume an LXT battery fits an XGT tool or vice versa. If you already own compatible batteries and a charger, staying on that platform can avoid buying another battery system; if you are starting fresh, choose the platform based on the broader tool lineup you expect to use.

Which Makita impact driver fits your work?
For an existing LXT setup: compare XDT20 and XDT21 by exact SKU
The XDT20 provides a concrete specification set for an 18V LXT brushless driver with four speeds and a 4-1/2-inch body. Makita’s current latest-products result also lists XDT21T as a kit and XDT21Z as tool-only, but the available information does not establish how the XDT21 relates to the XDT20 or give enough detail for a direct specification ranking. Treat the XDT20 as a documented candidate, not a definitive current LXT winner; inspect the current XDT21 detail page and compare the exact kit or bare-tool SKU before deciding.
For an XGT setup: consider GDT04 for its published power and modes
The GDT04 is the XGT candidate here, with four speed settings and a tightening mode. Its 2,040 in-lb maximum torque is higher than the published figures for the XDT20 and XDT18, but that number alone does not establish that it is the best choice for every task. Platform compatibility and the fastener, material, space, and degree of control required should drive the decision.

For tighter spaces: consider XDT18, with an availability check
At 5-1/4 inches long, the XDT18 is the compact option among these documented models. Its 2021 announcement is older than the other cited releases, so verify that the precise model and package remain available before planning a purchase around it.

All four candidates use a 1/4-inch hex shank. Use impact-rated bits suited to the fastener and material; no particular bit brand or product has been evaluated here. A driver with several speed settings gives you options for adjusting the tool to the work, but the listed RPM and IPM figures do not by themselves show how a tool behaves in a particular application.

Check the kit contents and exact SKU
A model name does not guarantee the same package contents across listings. Makita identifies XDT21T as a kit and XDT21Z as tool-only; the XDT18 announcement also described kit and tool-only versions. Before checkout, confirm whether the specific SKU includes a battery, charger, bag, or case. The XDT20 announcement gives specifications but does not establish the contents of a current retailer package. Current price and stock are not established here, so check the live listing rather than relying on an older announcement.

How to make the final choice
- Identify your battery system. Choose an LXT candidate if your compatible batteries are LXT, or an XGT candidate if your batteries are XGT.
- Set the physical requirement. Compare length and weight with battery against the clearances and handling needs of your regular work.
- Choose the needed control. Decide whether multiple speed settings or the GDT04’s tightening mode matter for your applications.
- Verify the current model information. For the XDT21 listings, inspect the detail page and exact SKU; do not assume the brief listing resolves its specification differences from XDT20.
- Confirm what is in the box. Check battery, charger, and bag or case inclusion on the actual tool-only or kit listing.
